So the stock subwoofer finally took a dive and is blown. Looking to replace it with either the factory stock one or upgrading slightly and keep it in the same location. Are there any 3rd party subwoofers that will fight that enclosure/spot? I haul gear and have the dogs in the car almost everyday so I want to keep it concealed and clean.

I've got a really shinny nickel.

At that price the magnet in the sub would be too much fun to play with.

If looking to keep the stock enclosure, but replace the sub with something aftermarket... I would get one of these.... https://www.parts-express.com/dayton-audio-dcs165-4-6-1-2-classic-subwoofer-4-ohm--295-198

I’ve been wanting to upgrade mine as well. Is an amp upgrade needed if sub is swapped?
* I’ll also do some research.

IMHO - not worth replacing stock unit. I pulled the plastic box out, fabricated a mount for the stock Bose amp, wired a LOC off the sub line to feed a small JL mono amp mounted below the Bose amp, and ran wiring to the alternate wheel well. You can build a small MDF sub box to house a 6” sub which will provide plenty of boom in the rear cargo area. Mounts cleanly inside the divers side cubby. Doesn’t fit a 10” like that ebay box, but it’s hidden from view and cost a fraction of that in materials.

Hey thanks man. My research has started!
What JL mono did you use?
Thanks!

It's JLAudio XD 300/1. Guess I forgot but I just realized I actually fit an 8" JL 8W3v3 in the sub box. The JL amp takes speaker level input so I wired a RCA pigtail into the Bose amp sub output instead of using an actual LOC. I wired the speaker ground to the rear 12V power outlet so I wouldn't get any alternator whine. I also wired a bass control knob under the center armrest along with an aux-in from an A3. Works a treat - I can crank it up on bass heavy songs or scale it back when I don't want the extra boom. BTW - the drivers side cargo door fits perfectly over the sub so it's a hidden install. I just took the door off for the photo.

Did you really use a home wiring twist connector there? [o_o]
Thats a massive no-no for automotive wiring...

All the wires are solder sleeved butt connectors or direct soldered joints. I nicked the insulation on a ground wire while re-setting amp gains so slid that cap over it until I could pick-up some liquid tape.

I did a cheap setup with some left overs (old cars and scrap from my renos). Working hard and sooo clear.
Remove bass in the oem bose speaker so I can put more volume with less distortion, and increase the bass in the 10'' alpine type R.
1/2'' MDF, glued (PL 8x), screw with wood floor screws and sealed (kaulking).
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1925/31662324518_5d7015f323_c.jpg
Finish trim with 1/8'' mdf and some box fabric. Color match to come.
https://farm2.staticflickr.com/1962/45534897581_80a20243f7_c.jpg
With a MTX 300.2, bidge mode (auto ON with RCA, no need remote wire )
https://www.mtx.com/i/mtxcom/archive/images/ampMXA3002_400.jpg
I plugged the RCA with hot tap on the OEM sub output. This is very important, since when I remove the sub (track day), I can plug back the OEM sub in 2 seconds, so for the ride home I have some bass

Sometimes I'll use those home twist ones for wiring but I after screwing the cap on I inject it with silicone and let it dry.

Ever since we got my brothers base A4 avant quattro we'd assumed it hadn't had a proper subwoofer in it. Does the base stereo have one, or has ours been blown from the day we got the car?

Yea they all have subs. The stock one is just anemic. It’s behind the rear side panel on the passenger side. Top tip, with the standard stereo (non-Bose) if you swap the two wires going into the sub you get much more noticeable bass. The phase is reversed from the factory. Don’t think it’s the case with the Bose stereo though.

It is the bose, but with our other bose equipped Audi's were used to seeing a dedicated sub setting in the MMI. Again, I'll look when I get home in case the subwoofer did actually die

Thanks. Yes - ‘08 sline 6MTQ with Symphony II HU and Bose still installed. I’m running a Dension Gateway 300 for iPhone integration, aux, and steering wheel controls. That with the added sub and the stock BT phone has been solid enough for my purposes plus I prefer the stock dash appearance.
