View Full Version : Tampa Autosports Ported Blower

Hey everyone,

I've been a longtime lurker on the site and have been frequently enabled into parting with a good many dollars due to the knowledge others have shared on here. I recently decided to start looking into a ported blower and ended up posting an ad in the classifieds looking for a used one. After posting, I did a quick search (yeah, I know that was backwards) to see what else showed up for sale. Nothing was current but I came across a post where a member had given Tampa Autosports as a possible source to purchase from.

I gave them a call yesterday and spoke with Evan. I found him to be extremely knowledgeable and helpful. It turns out they offer a variety of different services and options including the option to purchase a fully ported blower assembly (with rotors, fluid, etc.) and a core charge. This is exactly what I was looking for because I can't have my car down for a couple weeks while I send my unit out to be ported. He sent an invoice last night, I promptly responded with payment, and today my new blower is in the process of being ported.

I know there are a couple different well-known porting houses for our little Eaton mill and this post isn't in any way intended to detract from them. I only wanted to give a little more exposure to Tampa because of their option to purchase a full assembly, thus only rendering the car out of commission for the time to swap blowers.

I will share additional feedback on my experience when I receive and install the new assembly, which I hope to see in a week or just over.

Cheers!

Joe

Cost?

JACKAL
10-19-2018, 05:08 AM
A fully assembled unit (less the pulley) was $1150 plus shipping. This also includes a heat-wicking coating that they apply to the housing. I will be returning my unit as a core for $300 so call it $850 net plus shipping costs.

No doubt Evan is among the best in my experience too for working on our "little eaton mills".

He certainly seems to know his stuff. I'm talking with him now about also adding the iABED 75mm throttle body along with the ported blower.

He does know what he is talking about... he helped me when my cats blew... he was amazing to work with, especially since he sent the test pipes right away and my car was not down for too long... I love the test pipes and believe it or not they actually reduce the amount of heat in the engine bay. It is a good thing to consider if your are modding the blower and T/B there will be more heat coming out and you will eventually blow the catalytic converters... hope to hear how it goes with the ported blower looking like my next mod

Thanks. I’m very interested to see how the car performs.

How much did your test pipes cost? I have been considering this as well. How bad were they to install?

I paid $750 because is got the ceramic coated ones for heat dispersion. The install is a Pain but if you talk to Evan he has a trick to install with out having to move the tranny

Just a heads up im also getting a ported blower for Evan. he will be releasing a spacer kit soon! I'm holding off on the install so I can do the spacers and only have to pull the blower once.

There Phenolic Spacers. They will space the charger from the heads. Kit comes with longer studs and assorted hardware. They are supposed to reduce IAT not sure about horse power gains.

Yeah, Evan knows his stuff. He has ported several and every single one has turned out fantastic. Great way to add a little power and some additional trap speed. Which is way better than increasing the amount of trap rap. [emoji1]

I appreciate the kind words and opportunity to get some more power in that bad boy! I want to also add that the spacers are being tested on two members cars and I will as always post results and real world data prior to making these available.

Yes I expect it will since I have a dual pulley setup. I’ve been blending a few gallons of e85 with 93 already and my next steps are going to be larger throttle body and an e85 tune so the HPFP is a given ‘must’ at this point. I know there is going to be more air moving through the engine so I might as well make sure I can fuel it appropriately[emoji6]

Well, this arrived today. It is definitely a little smaller than I had envisioned based on some images I had seen awhile back. In any case, I just need the blower now and then I will be able to definitively answer whether or not my clutch is stock....

It's good to get that kind of feedback from people with firsthand experience so thank you - that's exactly what I am hoping this will provide! Did you have Tampa do your porting as well?

I took it to mean the blower. I figured if he was in a scenario where the car woke up that much just by a fuel pump he would have been throwing some low fuel pressure or lean AFR codes prior to the install.

Yes, you shouldn’t have any problem doing this. The wideband 02 sensors will compensate for the extra air and add fuel. Porting makes the blower more efficient, so your IATs will drop slightly as well.

I can't speak to the ported blower but I can say that I'm fortunate to live only 25 minutes from Tampa AutoSports. Evan definitely knows his shit and his crew of mechanics are amazing. I have all my work done there and I never mind hanging out while work is being done because there are so many super car owners who bring their cars to his shop.

Do those spacers actually do anything. We kinda already have spaces with the intake runners. Our S/C's aren't bolted directly to metal.

Install is complete. It’s raining here so I didn’t do much driving. In the little bit I did I can feel a noticeably improved throttle response. I plan to do a more comprehensive drive tomorrow to really see the impact but with just a few miles on tonight I think it was a worthwhile upgrade.

Interestingly enough in a 3rd gear pull from 1500 RPM to redline there was no clutch slip and no low rail pressure codes thrown even though I am on a 93/e85 blend with about 4 gallons e85. I will try to grab some data logs but it makes me wonder if the clutch and fuel pump have already been upgraded.

As far as parts to simply mate up the new blower, you really don't need anything. Maybe some new gaskets but it will just replace your current blower housing. Now depending on power levels and drivetrain, you may need an upgraded fuel pump and you may overwhelm your clutch. You may also wish to invest in an intake or larger throttle body to maximize the impact of the porting but again, not a required component.

I don't have before and after dyno or time slips so I can't really quantify. I can tell you that throttle response was noticeably improved and the car does pull harder. I would guess 20-25 whp but I don't have any data to substantiate that so take it with a pinch of salt and a fifth of rye [;)]

What would you expect to change? Other than the minimal additional wear that the clutch will see from driving over the next few weeks and perhaps some minor adjustments as the ECM adapts, I wouldn't expect any major changes to engine torque output. Something else I'm not considering?

The visual condition of the Snout has absolutely no relevance to the performance and or the condition of the internals or function of the blower. I absolutely will not re use a snout if it is not in good working condition and they are kept paired with each core to ensure it is not a mix match of parts. . I purchase cores when available, however I can assure you that there is no part of any blower that has been " sitting in the sea" or anything remotely close.

Have you reached out to the entity involved to see about rectifying your concern, before you go and post out of anger? You stated you’d post later but I think an opportunity to fix the problem is always warranted, then, if nothing has been accomplished, blast the whole situation publicly. Just my $0.02.

Yes, I reached out on the 9th about my concerns and was blown off. I reached out mainly because of the reply I was given in the 'new TB option' thread..

When about four of the statements in that reply also turned out to be all smoke I became a little frustrated.

Was there any data from evan regarding the phenolic spacers?
