Hey guys looking to switch into a b8 s4 from my 135i. IÂ’m not new to AudiÂ’s but I am new to the b8 platform. The car IÂ’m looking at has 50k miles one owner dsg car. The mech unit has been replaced at 38k miles and has had the valve cleaning done with it as well as the dsg fluids done. I know itÂ’s the first model year but my real concern is what are the odds of the unit failing after it has been replaced? Anything else I should look for?

Thanks for any info.

The mech units can still fail despite being replaced recently or even the entire tranny needing to be replaced.

As far as other things to look for the thermostat can fail, the water pump is not the upgraded metal one and PCV is approaching it’s service time (75k miles). Wheel bearings are something to be aware of and is a well documented issue.

Other than those few things the b8s are pretty bullet proof especially with it already having the valve cleaning.

Ok so essentially if it was replaced in 2015 it wouldn’t be with an updated unit? How much is the fix now for the tranny? Still 10k plus if it needs replacement? I know the other issue might be the sensor in the tranny itself which requires it to be taken out of the car and picked apart.

Any aftermarket warranties that you guys recommend that might cover the dsg at least partially?

It can certainly be okay if replaced in 2015 with a newer unit.

Tranny replacements are no longer 10k jobs. Used ones can be found for around or under 3k and a decent shop can replace it for you for less than 1k labor depending on the shop. But I’m no master on the subject.
