Hi guys,
Soooo, a lot of you are gone think “here we go again with the crown vs flat piston discussion”.
Here is the story:
I bought a 2005 2.0TFSI 200HP Quattro Avant (125000km) of this guy that have been told that the engine needs to be changed by the Audi dealer.
Basically the claim from the Audi dealer was that they have found scratches on the cylinder walls and that this led to pressure in the crank, which then lead to pushing oil out and into the intercooler. When the oil amount was at a peak, it would shot into the intake manifold and flood the chamber. This would cause the car not to run and in worst case hydro blocking the engine. WELLLL SH……T!![o_o][o_o][poop]
I bought the car and its now under surgery in my garage[wrench]

1. The Car had noooo issues when bought it from the seller. I was only told that it would run for a un-disclosed period of time and stop. And that was due to the issue mentioned above.
• No misfire, no engine lite, no nothing. Just purring like a cat.
• But I went in strong and took the thing apart..
2. To my surprise there were no scratches whatsoever on the cylinder walls as claimed by Audi!!Nada!![drool][hail]

I did dump 1l of oil out from the intercooler hoses. And it looks like it’s a piston/piston ring problem.[wrench]

Going forward, im going to re build the engine (not touching the crankshaft and bearings).
Basically just new pistons + bearings and seals. All tensioners including oil pump and fuelpump chain tensioners and so forth. All the standard mambo jumbo ….[:p]

Here is where it gets interesting (back to topic). The Mahle pistons I got from ebay are flat top 06D107066C and the pistons I pulled from my engine is the 06D107066D crown top forged pistons[confused].

(FYI: I asked the seller if the picture in the add was representative to what I get In the mail as it looked like a very generic picture. Explained what I have (crowned pistons) and the part nr, and he confirmed that the pistons he sends me are the correct ones). Hi still is confirming that this piston change is ok after i recived them.)

I have googled the world and yet to find someone covering the topic conclusively…(might also be my searching abilities.. I figured that the flat top pistons are some kind of interchangeable part that Audi has reverted to. My question is related to the volume of the composting chamber.

1. I can’t know if the volume has changed and hence changing my comp ratio ?? It looks like the Mahle flat top pistons have a smaller dome in the center. So might be compensated for?
2. If the comp ratio changes , will this mean that the car needs to be re programed in anyway? Or dose a slight change not affect the programed air to fuel ratio?
3. Anyone know of somebody that have changed from crowned to flat and there experience with that?

Just trying to avoid a misfire problem that ends with me needing to pull the engine again to change pistons due to the comp ratio . Probably after hours of fault searching as well.

All inputs to the topic is highly appreciated[:D]

If those are stock replacements, the flat top pistons will drop your comp ratio from 10.5:1 to 10.3:1. This won’t cause you any issues whatsoever. Stick em in and run it.
