Trying to help my kid out. Looking to see if this is normal for there to be oil sweat on the silver round piece with the 5 bolts on the top right of the drivers side bank of cylinders. What is that part anyway. I looked at blown apart diagrams but just not sure. Thanks. Joehttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181009/85ab5df9c5df6bd1cdee6c600080ac6a.jpg

that is a vacuum pump. where exactly does the oil appear to be leaking from

[edit] i think the vacuum pump may actually be for the brake booster

Vaccum pump. Mine is leaking as well. New pumps are like $225-$300, new gaskets and O-rings are $30. I'm going with the new gasket method first and hoping that solves it. Not sure if something is causing them to leak. Hope someone can chime in as to why they fail.

i found the following gasket rebuild kit on amazon. i have zero experience with this kit, but its only $30 and the R&R of the vacuum pump appears fairly straightforward

Thanks guys! I have forwarded the info to my son. Hopefully he can fix it himself! Are there any weird tools, double square, torx or otherwise necessary?

i'm not near my car at the moment, but the screws appear to be torx from pictures. also, the pump is somewhat close to the radiator support so you may need some stubby tools to access the screws. have him post up a write-up if he is successful with the install

Just wanted to bump this. Is it as easy as taking it off and replacing the gasket and o-ring? Does the oil need to be drained first?

It's higher than the pan (as is everything else, I guess), so I would not think so. I'm sure there is some oil in it, but that'll drain itself. [;)]

It being higher was my thought process as well. Hopefully the gasket just failed and there isn't excessive pressure causing this. Thanks!

My sons car went in today to have a anti-freeze leak checked and at the same time they're going to advise if indeed the pump needs to have the gaskets replaced if it does will be doing it and I will let you know.

Thanks. Hoping it's just the gasket, and not the pump!

Update! Very simple fix using the Amazon gasket and O-ring kit. Took less than 30 minutes. Inspect all radiator hoses as we had one that was weak. So while it was off it was replaced. Joe

There looks to be a piece of the gear that needs to be perfectly lined up according to a video I watched. Did you happen to notice if the part just wouldn't fit back on if it were misaligned, or if it would potentially cause damage (I wouldn't think this to be the case)? I should be doing mine this week.

It's like a keyway. Will fit all the way in one way. Don't force it.

glad everything worked out [up] were you able to access the torx screws on the front with normal tools?

Well that's a bummer. Was unable to fit my tools in the area to get to the torx screw on the bottom and side. Now I need to take it to a shop.
