-| TEKNIKA's 2018 Audi RS5 [B9] Audi-Biography: The Epic Journey of Project Mystique |-

[Day One]

Hello Audizine. I am new to the Audi brand and fairly new to the world of German vehicle ownership overall. However, I have had an extensive history of Japanese vehicle ownership starting with Hondas, Acuras, Mazdas and Infinitis. My wife and I currently own a 2017 Infiniti Q60S Red Sport 400, a 2018 BMW M4 Competition Package and we are the new owners of a 2018 Audi RS5 in Navarra Blue purchased from Audi North Orlando in September 2018. I have many plans with this new B9 platform and would love to share my build, entitled "Project Mystique" with other fellow Audi enthusiasts. So, please stay tuned as I hope to post frequently with progress updates and daily Instagram posts. Thank you.

Looking forward to your build! What are your thoughts M4 vs B9 RS5?

Thank you. Firstly, the M4 and B9 RS5 are beasts in their own rights and merits. It is all a matter of how the experience is delivered based on their unique design language and heritage. Obviously, the most prominent difference is the drivetrain. With that in mind, while both share similar HP/TQ output, the way each vehicle utilizes and delivers that power is quite different. In my opinion, the F82 M4's power is best served from the mid-range (60+ mph) to the top end, whereas the B9 RS5 excels from a stop. Perhaps, one of the most lasting impressions of owning a B9 RS5 is how truly incredible it is with launch control. The acceleration is mind-blowingly quick. While the M4 is no slouch, if I was challenged at a stoplight, I would choose my B9 RS5 all day.

I can offer much more insight with regard to other aspects of each vehicle if you wish, but to save from writing an incredibly long post essentially reviewing each vehicle, I decided to focus on the most obvious difference.

Can you let us know what fitment the recommended?

Absolutely, but in time. I am withholding the exact details and measurements until the wheels arrive, are installed and officially revealed by myself and BC Forged on their image gallery. This is to guarantee the fitment and appearance I am trying to achieve, as well as to prevent incorrect measurements prior to a proper installation and test drive. I will however disclose that I had BC Forged custom build the wheels for maximum concavity specific to exact measurements of the B9 RS5's clearances while retaining an aggressive "flush with fender" appearance. I will update as more details are available, so please stay tuned.

Great eyes! Yes, it is Navarra Blue. Some of the images have been edited to compensate for lighting and dramatically increase the blue's tonal qualities. My avatar, delivery image and video are a better true-to-life representation of Navarro Blue.

Something AMAZING happened this week! The RS5 went from real stock, to wheel jock. The 4-week production time to have a custom-fit set of forged wheels measured to the vehicle’s specifications, a challenge due to the sparse availability of information with this new B9 RS5 platform and match the appearance, maximum concavity and stance I am striving to achieve made the anticipation all worth-while. There was not a single hitch throughout the entire process and experience at BC Forged NA starting from the initial design/style selection, custom fitment and measurements, forge production, mounting and balancing, special collaboration with MrSparkleDetailing for coating protection with Opti-Coat Pro, to the final installation. Thank you BC Forged NA, Jonathan DeHate and the rest of this talented team. I cannot speak highly enough of this company’s professionalism and expertise. I will be back! 😎

Please keep me posted as B9 RS5 ECU/piggyback, downpipes and turbo-back exhaust system upgrades are made available.

Thank you! The H&R VTFs for the B9 RS5 have an adjustment range of 0.4" to 1.2". I requested my mechanic to adjust the perches for a 1.0" lowering all around. I am confident you will not be the only one requesting a side profile comparison, so I decided to create a graphic comparison for future reference. I hope this helps.

Your build and color reminds me of my mustang GT that I had, this is literally the best of both cars and I just absolutly love it. I will be following this thread to the T! Also, do you think you are going to get some wheel spacers? Seems like there is a bit of a gap you could fill out.

I truly appreciate the support and kind words. Project Mystique has quite a few developments on the horizon. Stay tuned! If you have Instagram, feel free to follow (@importeknika) where I post all updates there first. If you are in the market, knowing what I know now, I certainly would not hesitate considering the B9 RS5. I will not be adding any spacers. I had the wheels custom measured and built by BC Forged NA to be completely flush against the fenders. However, the new H&R VTF suspension may have settled, introducing a bit of negative camber, despite the fresh alignment during the installation. Again, thank you for your support and following the project!

Real question is which one? [emoji38]

Coupe is sitting pretty and two Sportbacks are inbound. Ones on a boat and the other is sitting at port awaiting release.

Lots of RS5 porn coming.

Project Mystique's journey to 600HP/600TQ has begun!

First on the power roster is Burger Motorsports’ JB4. A complete piggy-back, 100% plug and play tuning solution.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4844/45090082125_de2ec5c735_b.jpg by T3KN1KA (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156428562@N02/)

The BMS JB4 has arrived!

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4821/45968698022_09b604e7b2_b.jpg by T3KN1KA (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156428562@N02/)

Installation: The BMS JB4 test unit was installed by Audi North Orlando in a matter of 45 minutes. The unit was a simple matter of unplugging and re-plugging up to four connection points (TMAP, MAP, Fuel Pressure, OBDII CANBUS) depending on the individual platform and tuning parameters.

JB4 Mobile: The beauty of the BMS JB4, outside of its tuning capabilities, is its ability to provide real-time data and metrics via the JB4 Mobile App onto a device of your choice inside the cabin (iPhone, Android) through a Bluetooth connection. The app also seamlessly provides the ability for data logging an extensive array of data, for fine tuning.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4840/45235028285_d2259f3b4c_b.jpg by T3KN1KA (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156428562@N02/)

Initial Impressions: I have been able to test and log runs utilizing the JB4's baseline MAPs (#1 = +2 PSI, #2 = +3 PSI, #3 = +4 PSI). Upon the completed JB4 installation, JB4 Mobile App installation and JB4 firmware update, I first drove the vehicle approximately 20 miles under stock parameters to ensure proper installation and monitor for any errors, CELs and anomalies, to which the JB4 has been flawless. I then immediately selected the MAP#3 option to test and immediately noticed a significant gain in power and throttle response. I provided the logged runs to Burger Motorsport for analysis. BMS then requested for me to test and log MAP#1/2 in order to be able to pattern and monitor for any timing changes. BMS did identify that the ECU "pulled" some timing from MAP#1 to MAP#3. Though MAP#3 is a safe tune, BMS recommended that I test on an E85 mix in order to accommodate for a higher MAP with increased boost.

https://farm5.staticflickr.com/4819/46029500601_0a3365ab57_b.jpg by T3KN1KA (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156428562@N02/)

Upcoming Plans: I will be dyno-ing this week to determine baseline power output and post-JB4 MAP#3 power gains. I will then test with an E85 mixture on MAP#3 and perhaps a higher MAP with increased boost, if deemed safe. I am certain some environmental factors (ambient temperature, humidity, heat soak, etc.) will affect the overall power output and determine our ability to continue further safely. Dyno power metrics will be posted once completed.

Future Goals: All subsequent power upgrades will be tested with dyno metrics and documented to ensure power gains. Project Mystique will be built for performance, power and balance without sacrificing drivablity, efficiency, reliability and without upgrading major components (turbos, engine, transmission). Cheer us on to our ultimate goal of 600HP/600TQ in 2019!

You have a really nice build going on here, enjoying the pics and write-up. When you changed wheels/tires, did that mess with the cars electronics and throw any codes? Also, can the engines components/seals handle e85 above the content found in 93?

Thanks,

Hi Doug! Thank you so much for the kind words. I truly appreciate the support and hope that the "pioneering" that I and the few B9 RS5 owners out there are doing to enhance the limited knowledge base on this new platform will pay dividends for future B9 RS5 owners. There is not much information available on the capabilities of the platform at the moment, so much of it is trial and error. To answer your question, changing the wheels and tires did not affect any of the vehicle's electronics whatsoever. However, modifying the B9 RS5 suspensions with magnetic ride and DRC has the potential to throw codes, if not performed properly. My H&R VTFs were installed and aligned by an Audi Master Mechanic at Audi North Orlando who had to do his own research with Audi Technical Support in order to ensure that the instructions provided by H&R correlate with proper Audi technical service. With regard to E85, I performed by own research and obtained testimonies and experience from other local Audi owners running on E85. My research showed that newer vehicles are actually designed to tolerate E85. Thank you for stopping by and checking out the project. I actually had the vehicle dyno'ed earlier this week and will post the results this weekend. Stay tuned!

A quick update before bed. Last week, Project Mystique went under more dyno testing at DigiPowerUSA for baseline (stock) and Burger Motorsport JB4 R&D under MAP#3 and MAP#5 on 93 octane. Here are a few photos, videos and official dyno results. The next session will be January 3, 2019, and will test Roc-Euro's intake, a more refined RS5-specific JB4 MAP along with E83. I foresee 500+AWHP/500+AWTQ in the near future. Enjoy!

Thank you Hibnah. Beautiful work on your RS5 as well. I see it all over Instagram. Haha. I can definitely see the super car potential of the B9 RS5. I plan on sharing how to break the 600HP/600TQ barrier once we achieve it. I do not plan on utilizing E85 regularly. It will only be used for testing purposes. The ultimate goal is to achieve the highest gain reliably, consistently and safely without upgrading the vehicle’s major components (engine, transmission, turbos).

I really look forward to your updates, keep them coming! It certainly does not look like much drive train loss from Audi's crank power #s. What gear did you do the pulls in and does that represent a 1:1 ratio? Does the Berger mod overwrite what is in Audi's ecu or is it changing variables in a piggy back manner? It would be very cool if it was possible to add a flex fuel sensor to enable running different levels of ethanol without changing maps for each fuel type. Although not an issue for tracking net gains which is what really matters, some purists like to see SAE vs STD dyno curves.

Hi Doug. Thanks for following the build progress and updates. I believe one of two things, either Audi’s drivetrain loss is kept to a minimum (10-15%) or Audi is underrating the crank power significantly as is common with the big German three (Audi, BMW, MB). From my prior experience with my 2018 BMW M4 CP, their powerplant was dyno’ing its factory rated crank power (444) to the ground and would lead us to believe that the crank power was over 500HP. I believe this is the same scenario with the B9 RS5. Audi would certainly not allow BMW or MB to have the upper hand, especially in this highly contested luxury sport coupe segment.

With regard to this dyno session, all runs were in 4th gear. We tried to research the transmission’s gear ratios but could not find the exact numbers. We are planning to run 5th gear at the next session (01/03/19) to see if that makes a difference on power output. Burger Motorsport noted from the logs that they do not believe we are outputting the maximum torque available, which could be due to not being in the best (1:1) gear.

On the bright side, 433AWHP and 486AWTQ, reflecting a gain of 30AWHP and 36AWTQ, from only the base S4 MAPs and 93 octane is quite promising. I am looking forward to having the Roc-Euro Intake and AWE Touring Edition Exhaust and Performance Catalysts in next, along with a more RS5-specific tune and E85 next to get us much closer to the magical 600!

Same here. Most of my updates are prioritized for Instagram (@importeknika). Which exhaust and downpipes have you decided on? I ordered the AWE Touring Edition Exhaust and Downpipes which should arrive early January. I will be participating at a charity race event at Sebring International Raceway where I will be debuting the car and showcasing the exhaust. I will be sure to share any media coverage of the event and exhaust on here.

Thank you for sharing this. The technician at DigiPowerUSA and I performed a quick internet search for the gear ratios and did find the same data you shared. However, we were uncertain of the validity of these specifications as it was not sourced directly from Audi. Thus, we opted for 4th gear. If we can confirm directly from Audi of the 1:1 gear, then we will certainly use that gear for all future dyno testing. I am sure that little golden nugget of information is somewhere on the internet. Kudos to you if you can help me find it! [hail]

I agree with you 100%. Burger Motorsports requested that we test in 4th gear since we were unsure of the 1:1 gear. After discussions with BMS regarding the dyno results, we did notice a drop off in torque, which could be attributed to the incorrect gear. Visually, after reviewing video footage of the virtual cockpit view showing the RPM, power and torque gauges, I also noticed that the torque started to drop off higher in the gear.

Also, I forgot to answer your question regard the BMS JB4. It is a completely plug-and-play piggy-back unit that intercepts and "adjusts" the signals to be sent to the ECU. I am still contemplating the use of a flex fuel sensor to calibrate the E85 mixtures, as I do not know how often I will be using E85 outside of testing. I may install one for accuracy, but otherwise, BMS has provided me mixing instructions for their MAPs. There are still a lot of unanswered questions which is all part of the early-adopter learning curve and drives my passion for the B9 RS5. I hope the testing and information I discover and share will help others down the road.

I haven't found anything from Audi, including reviewing the owner's manual. The website barely tells you what features are in the options packs, let alone gear ratios. [;)]

99% chance it's 6th. Most of these trans are double overdrive. It definitely won't be 4th. And I doubt it's a single OD.

Thanks for the answers. I am not sure if your car is speed limited to 155 MPH or not, but can the JB4 get around that limitation?

I would also suspect running at >e70 might result in + 20 additional HP.

You are welcome. The vehicle does not have the Dynamic Plus Package, so it is limited to 155. I was informed that Burger Motorsport has the capabilities to remove the speed limiter, but from what I was told, doing so would result in codes and errors, as the ECU has not been fully cracked yet. So as of now, the removal of the speed limiter is not available to the customer base.

BMS and I are both confident in a significant gain in power from E85. I am looking forward to finding out just how much at the next dyno session on January 3, 2019!

You were right ChrisRS5, 6th gear is in fact the 1:1. It looks like our dyno results thus far have more room for accuracy and power.

I didn't realize there was a JB4 working for the RS5 yet? Is is just running the group 7 B9 harness? I had a JB1 on my 2016 S3 and it was a tank for 20,000 miles before I got the RS5.

Destin has been our sales guy for the last few vehicles we purchased there. He has been amazing. I'm excited to see his sportback when it arrives.

Fred was our salesperson, but everyone else we have met including Destin have been fantastic and friendly throughout. Fred and Destin are great guys and truly passionate about the brand and product, as is everyone at Audi North Orlando. Destin and I have been chatting recently, discussing our projects and plans. I am excited to see his RS5 SB also.

Nice to see some Orlando guys here. I have purchased all but one of my previous Audis at Audi North. This thread is making me appreciate the b9 body a lot more. Hope to see this car around some day. Cheers

The feeling is mutual. Thank you for checking out the progress and hope to see you in the area driving a B9! BTW, are you and the rest of the Orlando folks here also a member of CFLAudiGroup on Facebook?

Nardo is stunning. I just had all the windows done with ceramic and the black really helps make the Nardo just pop. I’m going to get a bunch of pics today. I cant wait though to see how this chase to 600 goes though, as I probably will take this as inspiration for mine.

Maybe us Orlando guys need to met up. I’m over on the west side.

Thank you for following the progress and cheering me on to 600! I am confident it will happen in 2019 with the right components and partners. We are already over 550+TQ at the crank on base S4 MAPs with only 93 octane and no other mods. I am looking forward to what Burger Motorsports develops as an RS5-specific MAP from our dyno testing. The Roc-Euro intake is next for installation and testing. I have just received confirmation of shipment of my AWE Touring Edition Exhaust and Downpipes as well. With all of these bolt-on upgrades, AWE performance catalysts once available a more RS5-optimized MAP and a touch of E85, I foresee close to 500+AWHP and 550+AWTQ, which would translate to 550+HP and 600+TQ at the crank.

Not sure if you are asking me, but I had Llumar CTX 15% tints installed.

The JB4 for the RS5 is still in development. I do not believe it is available for sale to the general public as of yet. I am one of a few select testers of this new JB4 for Burger Motorsports. My dyno testing and work alongside the tuners at BMS have netted 30AQHP/36AWTQ running base S4 MAPs and 93 octane, and gains of 50+AWHP in the midrange, thus far. With our testing, we hope to have even more potent and aggressive RS5-specific MAPs, but it is a learning process, full of trial and error. Relatively, there is still very little known about the RS5 in terms of efficiency, capability and durability, so we are doing the research and testing now with the hope that all who come after us will benefit.

Thank you Beast! I am impressed with the results thus far, but we are only getting started. I see you joined the MB camp. Congratulations! It is on my bucket list to experience all three sport coupe offerings from the big German three. Two down (Audi RS5, BMW M4 CP) with only the C63S to go. Although I have been looking more and more at either an R8 or 911 next. How do you like the C63S so far? I would be interested to hear your thoughts on the C63S.

The lowered styling plus the wheel is absolutely astonishing! How’s your jb4 piggyback working regarding faulty codes/power gain? Also how does the lowering affect the approach angle? I’m planning on lowering it but don’t want to hit my front bumper entering/exiting parking lots with a ramp.

Hello! Thank you so much for the kind comment. The JB4 has been nearly flawless. I have had zero codes, CELs, etc. as a direct result of the JB4. I posted the power gains via a dyno chart earlier in this thread. From a standard S4 MAP, we gained 30AWHP and 36AWTQ to the ground at peak values. However, the mid-range shows 50+AWHP and 70+AWTQ. This power is quite noticeable and it shows well on the dyno. We will be dyno testing again this week with a more aggressive tune and E85. With regard to the approach angle, to be honest, the RS5 front end sits considerably higher than other vehicles in its class (M4, C63S) despite the 1" lowered stance from the H&R VTFs.

This teaser trailer of a video I am working on should give you a much closer view. Enjoy.

Marty. Yes, that is the graph during my last dyno session. George and I have not speculated on any figures with E85 as the majority of potential variables on the B9 RS5 is still primarily untested. Most of our research thus far on the B9 RS5 is a matter of setting a new precedent and trial and error. However, I would not be surprised to see figures nearing, if not exceeding 500+ to the ground. I am in the process of securing downpipes for Project Mystique. A full cat-back exhaust is due to arrive this week and testing with the Roc-Euro intake will start once the figures with E85 and a more aggressive RS5-specific MAP is complete.

I am not sure what you mean by "auto-learning" map?

With regard to lowering, I am not able to give any insight to either the adaptive cruise control/traffic jam assist as I have not used either. I will add it to my testing and report back when I have answers. However, I have had zero issues with the H&R VTFs thus far, other than more frequent occurrences of necks breaking. Haha.

Hey man, thanks for the response. The auto learning map is something I've been running in my 335i for the past 5years, this is how burger tuning defines it on our platform;

"Map 5: Autotuning map. Boost ranges between 12-17psi based on your cars octane, conditions, and modifications. E85 compatible. If using E85 we suggest around 30% to start. Refer to the E85 FAQ for addl info. Resets to 93 octane level adaptions when selected and adjusts itself up or down from there."

The latest revisions really woke my car up, just curious if you've heard that they'll go down that path with the B9.

Id appreciate that input on the adaptive cruise, traffic jam assist. Some of us commute into manhattan............. kinda important lol.

Beautiful car btw! way to be the first to kill the game

I saw u had an Audi dealer install the jb4 unit. Are they completely cool with it and would not flag the vehicle? Parts like lowering springs I imagine would be fine as the dealer have to prove the spring causes any problem to void warranty on suspension, but I thought I have to unplug the piggyback before going to dealers.

Marty, thank you for the explanation regarding the "auto-learning" MAP. I was unaware that BMS was doing this for the BMWs. There is a MAP#4 for the Audi counterparts that allows for manual modification of all parameters. The MAP#5 for this beta test unit is a +6 PSI increase recommended for E85 mix and race fuel, which shows nearly 25 PSI of boost to the twin turbos. However, George requested that we test it on pump gas, assuring me that it was safe. The ECU automatically pulled some timing, but as evidenced by our gains (50+AWHP/70+AWTQ) in the midrange, MAP#5 is a killer tune even at its current state. And mind you, these are standard MAPs for the S4. I can only imagine the power gains achievable once we hone in with an RS5 specific MAP, E85, Roc-Euro Intake, AWE Tuning High Performance Catalysts and AWE Tuning B9 RS5 Touring Edition Exhaust Suite. All of a sudden, 600HP/600TQ does not seem so far away.

I will certainly update regarding adaptive cruise control and traffic jam assist once I have more information and results to share. Having lived in NJ most of my life, I can certainly agree with you of its importance. Haha.

I appreciate the kind words. I love the process, progress and experience with building a true project with the B9 RS5. I am trying to kill the game now so that those who follow can do the same. Cheers!

Hello! So let me share with you exactly what I wrote to another individual who asked nearly the same thing on AudiWorld.

"Hello. So, here is the background. I am in a unique situation where my installs are performed by an Audi Master Mechanic as "side work". There are obvious advantages to this including the fact that the work is performed by an Audi Certified Master Mechanic, at an Audi facility where the necessary resources, technical support/data and equipment are readily available and at an establishment were the work will be to specification, reliable and consistent. Again, I have a unique relationship with the dealership where they are fully aware of the modifications and who performed the work. This makes the situation a bit more transparent for all parties involved. Though the cost of having the work done at the dealership is higher, the added security of knowing that the work was done by a certified Audi professional at an Audi facility is worth the added expense and peace of mind, in my opinion.

I have not had a situation arise that required me to take the vehicle in for a problem caused by any of the modifications thus far, nor had my scheduled maintenance and services due as of yet, with only 2K miles on the odometer. However, when I do, they are fully aware of the modifications and I will be sure to remove the JB4 if necessary. The potential for warranty issues is ALWAYS present. All modifications are at our own risk. However, as I stated earlier, my situation is unique due to my relationship with the dealership and the dealership's reputation for being more lenient with modifications. In fact, many of the employees there including a sales manager have race-spec vehicles and regularly race their Audis at the track. For example, I will be joining Audi North Orlando at a charity race event at Sebring International Raceway mid-January. Also, one of their customers has one of the fastest 9-second RS3's in the world.

So again, a dealership has every right to deny a warranty claim due to a modification, but transparency certainly helps. I have had no issues with the adaptive suspension (DRC) and/or magnetic ride control with the H&R VTFs. However, the work was done by an Audi Master Mechanic who is familiar with the technical details of this suspension. I do want to also disclose that Audi North Orlando is one of the top dealerships in R/RS sales in the country with multiple Audi Master Mechanics in-house. Some Audi dealerships do not even have one. So their expertise and knowledge base on these vehicles is much higher than most dealerships.

I hope this sheds some light on the situation."

The mid-range gains are really impressive. Peak numbers are good, but you want to optimize the area under the curve. Looking forward to the results from this next pull!!!!

DFWRS5, thank you! We are impressed too! And mind you, these gains are on standard S4 MAPs on 93 octane pump gas. All of a sudden, 600HP/600TQ does not seem so far away.

I will certainly share the results from the next session. Part of the reward in doing this research is sharing it with fellow enthusiasts so we can all grow together.

yes, the audi sport exhaust is switchable. the AWE isnt, therefore its like running around with the valves open at all times.

While everyone was at Daytona in preparation for the Rolex 24, I experienced a different kind of "roar" this weekend. 😍

“Patience Is a Virtue” and [AWE]some go-fast parts come to those who wait! Ladies and gentlemen, after weeks of anticipation, I present to you the AWE Tuning B9 RS5 Touring Edition Exhaust Suite along with the Roc-Euro B9 Intake on Project Mystique! This is a brief mechanical test drive immediately after installation. Aside from the AWE company car, we may be the first in the world to rock this phenomenal exhaust suite! What an amazing weekend. More media to come!

To be where we are at this stage of the project is a truly humbling experience. Because it would not be possible without the help and guidance of many others who share my passion. Thank you to Mirsad Hadzic, for yet another flawless install, Pierre Uteschill for sharing the project on Instagram and to all of the wonderful folks at Audi North Orlando for your courtesy, support and sharing in the joy of this build. I have not stopped smiling all weekend. What a way to start 2019!

You and me both! I knew it sounded good from all of the AWE promotional videos but man, the videos do not do the exhaust note justice. From talking to the experts at AWE, and all of their years of experience with exhaust systems, they rate the sound quality of this exhaust to be just a notch under exotic level. It is quite impressive. I will have more media to share on here and on my Instagram (@importeknika) first.

Thank you Xenny! As I just mentioned above, you will not be disappointed. If you do, you have no soul. J/K. LMAO!

There were zero hiccups on the install. However, I must disclose that the install was performed by a very experienced Audi Master Mechanic who deals with R/RS vehicles frequently. So there is not much that can really challenge the man. The mechanic actually did not install the valve simulator, so I do not hear the "clicking" at all. I spoke with the experts at AWE about this and they informed me to keep a close watch. They are aware of faults potentially arising as the valve is essentially in a perpetually stuck open state. Apparently, it can record a fault in the system which may/may not throw any codes. I have driven approximately 100 miles with no errors, faults and CELs whatsoever. I have even verified this on the JB4 as it is capable of reading and erasing codes since it is connected directly to the OBD port. I will update should anything arise, but for now we will run without the simulators.

I'm ready to take you money today. [:D]

The system for our RS5 coupe will be complete this week.

Mops has this area on lock. Haha. [up]

ok ok I will admit that the B9 does actually sound pretty good with that AWE [:D]

Thank you Beast. Project Mystique took on a completely different attitude once she started breathing better with the Roc-Euro Intake and AWE Exhaust. The car at stock truly sounded muted even with the RS Sport Exhaust. I look forward to every overpass with childish anticipation for the opportunity to let off rounds. The only way to describe it is shotgun-like or thunder clap. It is nuts.

Sounds amazing man. 🤙🏼

Waiting on mine to come in. Does that make me 3? 5? Or where are we now haha. AWE gang 😆

Thank you so much Hibnah! You will fall in love with it. Honestly, I do not know but I will tell you this, we RS5 owners are a very rare and limited group of Audi drivers. I spoke with a friend who is an Audi of America Sales Trainer. He informed me that of the 4K Audi Sport vehicles sold last year, the majority were RS3 and TTRS models. Which would lead us to assume that the RS5 sales are less than 1K, if you also factor in the R8 and RS7. Now, if you go one step further to speculate how many RS5 owners are modifying their cars, then you can see just how small of a "gang" we truly are.

I certainly will. Yes, please share any findings with OBDEleven also. Speaking of OBDEleven, would you by chance know if TPMS functionality can be added with this?

The only foreseeable benefit would be to not hear any clicking in situations where the valves would open.

I haven't looked into what it takes to add direct TPMS unfortunately.

If a soft code does pop up due to the unplugged exhaust flaps, these two links could be useful

Thank you for sharing this. These could be very useful links in the future. With regard to the direct TPMS, I am working with the parts department at Audi North Orlando to identifying the parts needed to add this option. The parts required were quoted to me at approximately $1K. Apparently, some research is required as to whether or the not vehicle is pre-wiring for direct TMPS. If so, then the feature can be added with the required components and some coding. I will be stopping by Audi North Orlando next week for another "secret" install. I will update with regard to the pre-wiring status shortly after.

Wow! Looks extremely impressive.

Thank you! I will say this, the non-resonated version of the exhaust by itself is loud. If you plan on doing the high performance catalysts as well, it nearly doubles the overall loudness. So be prepared. Otherwise, I have spoken to AWE Tuning and was told that a resonated conversion system will help to mitigate the overall volume.

LMAO! Project Mystique is an emotional rollercoaster. I will be making multiple chronologically accurate updates this week. First, let us start with Project Mystique's first track day at PBOC WinterFest HPDE at Sebring International Raceway.

-

Thank you everyone for your patience and staying tuned to the project developments. My hectic work schedule put a damper on my free time to compile updates, but rest assured that updates are forthcoming, though slowly but definitely surely.

PBOC WinterFest HPDE | Sebring International Raceway | January 19-20, 2019

Quite a bit has transpired since our last update. Since the track event at Sebring International Raceway, we have learned quite a bit about the strengths and weaknesses of the B9 RS5 platform. The obvious strength is the vehicle's ability to produce power. For everyone being so patient, I have included four minutes of 4K in-dash video of Project Mystique's first ever track day. These videos showcase the car's power production. We were keeping up and on many opportunities would have been able to pass a Ford Mustang Cobra GT350 in this set of video clips. Unfortunately, with this being an HPDE event in the novice class, my instructor asked that I keep the speed under 125 MPH, let off throttle approximately 50-60% of the way down the straights, as well as give distance to relieve pressure off the Cobra GT350. It was also my instructor's recommendation that I not use the JB4 (+50AWHP/+70AWTQ) and keep the suspension in comfort for optimal compliance on a bumpy track, such as Sebring. We essentially ran the weekend on hardware power and suspension upgrades:

Power Modifications
- Roc-Euro B9 Intake
- AWE Tuning High Performance Catalysts
- AWE Tuning Non-Resonated Touring Edition Exhaust Suite

Suspension | Wheels | Tires
- H&R VTFs
- BCForged RZ05
- Michelin Pilot Sport 4S

Brakes
- Motul RBF660 Racing Brake Fluid

Along with learning the B9 RS5's strengths, we also discovered the weaknesses. This primarily consisted of inadequacies in the suspension and braking systems.

Suspension
Due to the B9 RS5's hefty weight of roughly two tons, the platform suffers from excessive body lean despite a lowered center of gravity with the H&R VTFs. With this in mind, Project Mystique is collaborating with an industry leader to R&D a custom race-spec coilover system that will suit our track racing requirements and will be revealed in the near future. Along with this, we will be looking to upgrade with every possible suspension and chassis reinforcement product available along with new R&D components.

https://farm8.staticflickr.com/7865/32113071627_1fe12bbaaf_b.jpg by T3KN1KA (https://www.flickr.com/photos/156428562@N02/)

Brakes
We learned quite dramatically that with the increased speed that comes from our additional power combined with the two tons of mass, the stock braking system is simply not suited for a weekend of rigorous track racing. Despite the upgrade to Motul RBF660 Racing Brake Fluid, we still managed to boil the fluid and lose our brakes at 110mph on a sweeping right into T7. Fortunately, we were able to pump the brakes back to life and managed to slow down before the turn. This was quite an unsettling feeling. Thus, we are now working hand in hand with an industry leader to R&D a bulletproof setup consisting of race-spec brake rotors and race-spec brake pads for the B9 RS5. More details on this once ready to reveal.

This is what B9 RS5 rotors will look like after the rigors of a track weekend.

For now, I will pause this update here, as documenting everything since January would make for an excessively long post. I will have multiple updates this week to get this build thread caught up. Thank you everyone for your support, comments and encouragement. It really does go a long way in motivating Project Mystique's epic journey.

"Chasing Cobras"

My apologies in advance for the intermittent cracks and pops in audio. I used an external microphone to better capture the newly installed AWE Tuning Touring Edition Exhaust and AWE Tuning High Performance Catalysts, but it was clearly too close to the exhaust. I have since found a much more optimal location for the external microphones for future track events.

Thank you and glad you enjoyed! I do wish the B9 RS5 was leaner also but it is considered to be a Grand Tourer and with all of this luxury comes added weight. The only other B9 RS5 there was spec’ed similarly to mine with no Dynamic Plus Package. To be honest, there is no real-life benefit to the DPP unless there are plans for exceeding 155 MPH. Most track racers use steel rotors versus ceramic due to the exorbitant cost of replacing ceramic rotors. The stock RS5 calipers are in fact phenomenal. They are made by Akebono, which is a well known brake company that produce systems for high performance makers such as McLaren. Thus, the only brake upgrades truly needed for a bulletproof setup are: higher temp brake fluid, stainless steel brake lines, higher density (harder) brake pads, better ventilated steel rotors and additional overall brake ventilation.

in relation to how "soft" the suspension seems, i think its exaggerated by how bumpy sebring is. It is after all an active airport with very old concrete, the bump absorption on compression could make the car feel "soft" when in reality its just a response to a rebound change in the mag ride shocks.

either way, car sounds crazy good with the external mic, almost v8ish

E63 is an airbag only, C63 hasn't updated their shocks in their facelift (valving only not component), so i dont understand how you get there. m3 suspension i mean, come on, they are notorious for not being able to put down the power stock on track. Competition brought alot of GTS components, but its a bandaid at best.

It doesn't matter what you are driving, if tracking, swapping out for higher boiling point dot 4 brake fluid is mandatory, while more aggressive pads for the track is pretty typical. I had a C4S that is significantly lighter and I still changed pads and went with SS brake lines and of course fluid. I do not believe a C63 has a braking advantage over a RS5. The other item that can make a big difference on the track are the tires.

There were many Corvettes and Porsche’s there. The more demanding track racers will still upgrade regardless. When your life is dependent on being able to stop, how much do you want to sacrifice? My instructor is a Porsche GT3 driver and is a coordinator for the Florida PCA. Many of their drivers have all boiled Motul RBF660 as well. The same fluid I boiled that track weekend. Apparently, if you want the best, upgrade to Castrol SRF, but it is pricy at $60-$70/liter. The Porsche racers have not boiled it yet from their experience. I have 2 liters on order. Being able to come to a stop from 125+ MPH is certainly worth more than $140. 😂

I actually no longer own the 2018 M4 CP (F82). I owned it for about 1.5 years, but never had the opportunity to take it to the track. I have had enough time with the the M4 to be able to share my experience with it against the B9 RS5. To summarize, the M4 fell short of the B9 RS5 in nearly every aspect except for the premium sound system where I would give the advantage to the M4's Harmon Kardon system and the transmission where the M4's DCT is slightly faster on the gears. Also, the M4 comes standard with direct tire pressure monitoring, whereas the MY18 B9 RS5 requires the Dynamic Plus Package. Other than that, the B9 RS5 is the clear winner.

By the way, I forgot to share the safety equipment we picked up for the PBOC WinterFest HPDE event at Sebring. In particular, I wanted to share a quick positive remark on the helmet and gloves I purchased. Ladies and gentlemen, allow me to introduce the Sparco Sky RF-7W Carbon Fiber Helmet and Sparco Arrow RG-7 Evo Racing Gloves. I highly recommend the helmet for its light-weight carbon fiber shell with carbon-kevlar base layers, excellent ventilation, comfortable inner lining and Hans clips pre-installed. The gloves were also comfortable, with the HTX material offering excellent grip and Sparco's "Touch S" patented touch sensitive technology allowing us to access touch menus (GoPros, tablets, laptops) without having to remove the gloves. Kudos to Sparco for their excellent race products!

If you don’t compromise on the project, then don’t compromise on safety. Prepping for Sebring.

Brother...your RS5 is SICK!!! I really enjoy following your mods and reading your posts! TOTALLY BADD ASS man! I'm waiting on a 2019 RS5 (ordered back in Sept), Navarra blue too, very similar spec to your beast. the wait is killing me, man! lol... thanks for sharing all your experiences!

Other than that, the B9 RS5 is the clear winner.

hey man... thank you very much for the comparison. I was waffling between the m4 and rs5. after reading your post, i'm glad I went with the rs5. thanks brother!

I test drove the C63s, the M3, the M4, and the 2018 RS5. For me, the RS5 was the clear winner. But I think it's just down to preference. For me, the closest comparison was M4 to RS5 and I found the same as Teknika.

For 2019 the RS5 comes standard with the tire pressure monitoring which is nice. Definitely should have been standard from the get go.

The only disappointments for me on my 2018 are the lack of tire pressure monitoring and a dip stick. Other than that, I love the RS5s GT nature and amenities. My prior car was a modified 2017 SS 1LE Camaro that was making 536/488 NA rwhp. I suspect my neighbors were delighted when I brought the Audi home[:D].

Thank you so much! I appreciate you following and checking out the updates. The progress on Project Mystique is very fluid. We learn something new about the car and its potential almost every day. Because of this, I make it my mission to share what I can in terms of new discoveries and R&D that others may not be capable or willing to learn, so that we can all progress on this new platform together.

You are welcome. Please let me know if you have any other questions and/or concerns. It would be my pleasure to go into further detail about my experience. Trust me, you made an excellent decision with the B9 RS5 and congratulations!

I agree 100%! It is very much a matter of preference.

I know! It was my one disappointment when I found out that the MY19 would include this standard. But no worries, I am already in the process of R&D'ing what we MY18 owners need to do in order to retrofit the MY19 DTPMS and will update once I have all of the details.

Woot! Another update! It is a long backlog update, but an update nonetheless. Haha.

So a lot transpired during our track event at Sebring and immediately after. Unfortunately, due to our brake issues, we were forced to sit out the last session on Saturday and most of the day on Sunday. There is no doubt about it, track racing induces an entirely different and incredibly higher level of stress on a vehicle, However, we will make a much greater and concerted effort at upgrading Project Mystique with a track-focus to prevent loss of costly track time at the next Sebring event in May.

So what did we learn from track testing?
Point 1: Chassis rigidity is phenomenal for a 4K pound Grand Tourer and much of this can be credited to the RS magnetic ride and undoubtedly, Quattro. From the videos, while many RWD vehicles were trying to manage their corner exit throttling, we are always ready to just point and shoot. However, any chassis upgrades will certainly not hurt to enhance overall rigidity, decrease body roll/sway and increased suspension dampening in order to control overall side-to-side dynamics.
Action Plan: Will purchase front upper strut tower brace, subframe mounts, custom coilover system (deactivating magnetic ride), race-spec front and rear sway bars.

Point 2: Some brake components require upgrading. The stock RS (Akebono) calipers are fantastic, BUT a weekend of track racing will introduce tremendous wear on the rotors and pads. I believe the RS stock iron cross-drilled rotors are fine for a few events, but even after one event, one will certainly notice strong wear and scoring on the outer perimeter of the rotor caused by the edge of the brake pads. Speaking of brake pads, the stock RS pads are quite "soft" as evidenced by the heavy daily brake dust produced. The stock pads will wear quickly after only one weekend event (10x 25 minute sessions) and expect to replace them shortly after. Lastly, it is an ABSOLUTE MUST to upgrade the brake fluid. The stock fluid is not capable of withstanding the rigorous braking on a track weekend. As stated in my previous update, we were able to boil upgraded brake fluid (Motul RBF660). Undoubtedly from the heavy braking and lack of ambient ventilation of this two-ton beast.
Action Plan: Will replace stock rotors with custom race-spec prototype rotors, custom race-spec brake pads, stainless steel brake lines, remove brake dust shields for improved ventilation, custom brake ventilation ducting (possible fans) and replace Motul RBF660 with Castrol SRF.

Point 3: Torque down your wheels after every session and consistently. My instructor and I noticed a vibration during hard cornering into the hairpin at T7. Initially attributed the problem to either brakes or tires delaminating. My wife and I noticed the vibration becoming more noticeable and prevalent during our 100 mile journey home.
Action Plan: Will torque to spec after each and every session. However, there are two schools of though regarding this. Some believe that torquing the wheels after each session will inherently cause over-torquing due to the repeated expansion from heating, retraction from cooling, then torquing process. However, I believe that airing on the side of caution, especially with the dangers of motorsports supercedes all.

Monday, January 21, 2019: Fortunately, we were able to reach home safely that Sunday with the severe vibration and immediately made arrangements for Project Mystique to be towed via flatbed early Monday morning.

Thank you kind sir! Actually, after some friends at Audi North Orlando and I got Project Mystique up on the lift for some brake work, we discovered a small rectangular opening underneath and on each side, just beyond the front splash guard where with some ingenuity, one would be able to create an intake on each side and run ducting directly into each rectangular opening and continue the duct-work towards the inside of the rotors and calipers.

Thank you Martin! Yes, we are fortunate to have arrived home safely. Thank God, I decided to call it a day after I noticed the vibration on the track. BTW, what do you recommend as a replacement to the plastic OE caps?

Negative. The scoring you see around the perimeter of the rotors is normal wear from consistent hard braking. Yes indeed, the missing bolts are quite obvious. [up]

I don’t want to hijack this thread. I don’t want to get my self in trouble again. But. The level of mods and money your looking to make this a track car is insane. It’s way to big and way to heavy. It’s a good daily driver with power. Especially in areas that see snow. Your in Florida. ? Why would you choose to dissect this entire car. ? I would have bought a Porsche 911 or a BMW M4.

Haha. Sorry, I was too slow to pick up. I will more than likely be ordering a set of titanium lug bolts before the next event. I leave the OE caps for a more uniform look to match the gloss black wheels. They will come off again on track day. How goes things in the frozen north, AKA Quattro country?

Actually, I received the AWE Tuning Intake nearly a month ago, but I decided to take extra time to have it ceramic coated before installation. It has been performing well thus far and definitely has that aggressive and inviting "vacuum suction" sound effect. I will have more post-installation content this weekend which may/not include some of these.

Sorry. I know, I am a bad influence. LMAO!

Lol you're definitely a "bad" influence. Getting the intake ceramic coated sounds like a great idea. Nice on the badges. I think I am one of the few that optioned my RS 5 SB with them from the factory. No one seemed to like them initially until they started seeing them in person. They are awesome!

Hey Teknika,

I've been thinking about your brake heat issue. From my experience with my Corvettes on track one of the things that caused brake failures was actually the ducting, or lack thereof. Now that I have my own RS5 to look at, it seems these cars don't have sufficient brake ducting for cooling.

I might be wrong here, but you might want to look into solving the potential cooling problem before you head back out on the track, even with the upgraded fluid. I say this because the Motul 600 is fairly stout and should have been good enough for your application (weight/brakes). Even with the updated fluid you're planning on, I'd be a bit worried that without increased cooling you might find yourself in the same situation.

Another idea to consider would be changing the rotors out to racing/sport (non drilled) rotors with directional slats and aluminum caps. Disk Brakes Australia make some nice stuff, but I don't know if they have anything for the RS5 specifically.

Either way, good luck and keep the updates coming!

Thank you so much for the kind words. Project Mystique is currently sitting on H&R VTFs, but we will be working with BC Forged NA to develop race coilovers for track use. I was able to procure the emblems from an overseas distributor. DM me and I can see if they have any more left.

Believe me, I want to see what Project Mystique will do on the 1/4. Unfortunately, my work schedule has not been able to accommodate the Test & Tune events at Orlando Speed World. I will definitely continue to try to make an event. More so, now that the BCM has been installed and we are ready to run with much higher boost and race fuel. Just as a comparison, another local RS5 with a RaceChip Tune, Intake and Exhaust on 93 octane pump gas ran an 11.33@120MPH. I spoke with the owner of the shop who did the work on that RS5 and he is confident that I will be in the high 10s. So we shall see soon enough. So believe me, I am just as excited as everyone to find out. Thank you so much for the support and it is my pleasure to share what I learn about the B9 RS5 with everyone!

Thank you so much for the insight! I have actually considered all of your points since our last track event at Sebring, last January. We are working on addressing all of these points for our next event, again at Sebring in May.

Let me share the details with you and the rest of the community.

Brake Ventilation: This is definitely an inherent issue, as the front fascia simply does not provide enough intake ventilation towards the brakes.
Action Plan: We will remove all brake dust shields and are currently working with a local race fabricator to design custom brake vent intakes and ducting from underneath the splash shield.

Brake Fluid: Actually, I have personally heard testimonies from various Porsche race teams, that have previously boiled through the Motul RBF-660s here in Florida. This is where I received the recommendation for Castrol SRF, as this has been proven reliable.

Brake Rotors and Pads: So, you are hearing the exciting news here first. I am actually working with a high performance brake company to develop the first race-spec rotors and brake pads specifically for the B9 RS5. We have already sent a stock B9 RS5 rotor and my last set of worn brake pads, which will be utilized for measurement, design and production. The rotors should be in our hands right before Sebring in May. I will make an official reveal once in-hand and I have received permission for public reveal.

It may not be an issue for several thousand miles, but down the road, I imagine it will result in undesirable valve deposits. This is especially true on DI turbo engines. I am curious of how Audi's race cars are equipped.

It is definitely not intentional. I am just trying to update as my time and schedule will allow. I have a lot of updates that tend to get back-logged due to the amount of activity and continual progress with the project. Not to mention, it takes time to complete these write-ups. My pleasure! Sharing with the community is part of Project Mystique's goal! Yes, I was number 22 on the right on all four passes. I am not really sure why Orlando Speed World Dragway classed me as a "bike". Though, I have seen this happen with other cars. It might just be an error on their part. I was running on MAP#6 on all four passes. On first pass, I bogged severely on launch due to being overzealous on the launch RPMs. However, I knew that there was much room for improvement based on the trap speed. Every pass thereafter was an improvement solely on driving and technique, with no vehicle changes whatsoever, other than lower ambient temperatures as night approached.

Actually dropping a few lbs at the track should not be an issue and could help your 60' times, however, you do not want to drive around that way on the street. You don't have stock wheels and tires so I am not sure what you are running at, but on factory tires dropping pressure 3-4 lbs should not cause a problem for your sidewalls. It's another one of those things that requires some testing to see what works best.

The other thing that will drop times is running in good DA. If you could run in some -200 air, that will produce some pretty significant times. Guys running camaros on the east coast are running mid tens with just bolt-ons/tune, but they also need DRs.

I make it out to Orlando Speedworld from time to time, in fact that's where I ran my [email protected] time :) But yes I do have some dragstrip time experience. I would agree with the professional race advice someone gave you in regards to tire pressure dropping on low-profile tires. I've always landed my best 60ft's using 38/37 f/r psi on my car, though our transmissions and off-the-line torque is different in that you have more available TQ via the TQ-converter and being able to brake-boost so my psi likely wouldn't not work in your case. Excellent results! Any ethanol in the mix on this run?

Thank you for pointing this out. Though the numbers appear to be impressive, there are no time slips to back this up. Also, I recognized the facility and after some research and investigation, the track is Yas Marina in Abu Dhabi, which at one point WAS the only NHRA certified dragstrip outside of the U.S. However, after multiple infractions of cheating the staging lines (staging with the rear wheels), I discovered that the NHRA no longer recognizes Yas Marin in their certifications. Anyone can claim to be the fastest in the world, but unless, there are official time slips provided as evidence at an NHRA certified track, it is not valid.

Loe, thank you for the advice. Come to find out, you may know one of my friends and teammates (Rush Pats). I will see how the tires hook up at our next test and tune. The Michelin Pilot Sport 4S tires worked well at the last session and resulted in the 1.6. However, a couple weeks ago in colder weather, I was able to get a 1.5. So I believe the 10s is there. Yes, I ran on an E30 mix and will push E35-37 along with another PSI of boost at our next session, which should hopefully get us to the 10s. Wish us luck!

You are right, if that track is not certified then that time does not count as a valid record. Staging with the rear wheels lol! Really! How desperate one could be.

Anyway valid or not, it's always good to be aware of what is going on with the plateform you want to push especially nowadays where a lot of advancement is only backed up by dragy times. I am sure you will get us a real 10's paper slip this season. Good luck.

Hi Rob. I am loving the H&R VTFs thus far going into 4K miles on the odometer. The ride is nearly identical to stock and allows for the DRC to control the sportiness of the ride. It also allows for a more aggressive lowering height in comparison to other HAS (ABT, KW). Feel free to ask any further questions you may have.

The H&R VTFs are not coilovers in the traditional sense of a spring with an adjustable perch integrated into a complete and proprietary shock assembly with setting variability (dampening, height, rebound, etc.). These are more of a coilover sleeve set. Essentially a spring sitting on an adjustable perch with no proprietary shock assembly but does allow for height adjustments (HAS). The VTF's sleeve, perch and spring replace the OEM spring but installs over your existing shock assembly.

[emoji1303] nice! Thanks for that. Sounds a lot easier to install then the coils... is that correct. So basically you are putting an adjustable spring over existing shocks. Basically like swapping springs? Any increase wear to the oem shocks then. That’s what I understand occurs if you just add springs as well as more bounce to the ride.

That would be an interesting thing to compare, our HPFP (EA839 engine) as an operating range of 30 to 250bar, what is the range of S/C 3.0 with the Autotech rod? For the those who have easy access to e85 that would add some margin to play with.

In my situation, I don't have access to e85 to begin with so that is not as critical. So far, I am not starving fuel like it seemed to be in the beginning. With a single bm10 nozzle, I can run 29psi no problem without any fueling issue. Running 29psi on straight pump without any sort of meth injection would be a bad idea anyway so it's not like I am replacing more fuel than I should in my opinion. There is actually room for more and I will be running my additional bm5 nozzle in the charge pipe when temps get warmer.

Some people are reluctant to meth for various reasons so knowing that an HPFP upgrade is possible would certainly be good news.

stock 3.0t (S/C version) can only get about 128000mbar at the fuel rail, but with an autotech rod, it increases to 175000mbar (with the low pressure now being the limiting factor). Not sure about the newer turbo engines, but our fuel becomes iffy (even on non-ethanol fuels) after approaching 2480mbar of boost pressure (21.7psi depending on ambient pressures), which is alleviated by that Autotech rod.

Hello again everyone. My apologies for the late reply and update but the past few weeks have been incredibly hectic with work and fitting in multiple skunkwork projects and reveals during my limited free time.

Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

I will not sugar coat and say that it is an easy project, as everyone's technical skills and experience vary. Also, proper tools and instruments are required to manage the magnetic ride and dynamic ride control systems. The fronts involves a perch and spring over the existing shocks whereas the rears have the shock and spring assemblies separated. Increased continuous rebound will of course introduce additional wear as with any mechanical components. However, dynamic mode on the B9 RS5 is already a bouncy ride, so I would like to believe that Audi's German engineering would account for this.

Loe, I actually have not looked into HPFPs yet. Our tuning thus far has yet to realize the maximum limits of the B9 RS5's fuel delivery. However, as I am sure you are aware, the better the situation with regard to fuel type and fuel delivery, the safer as well as more room for power output related to timing. As you know, E85 is a common staple for us here in Florida, but we will soon look into methanol if our tuning requires it. As of now, we are only requiring E35-E40 mixes to realize 450+AWHP and 530+AWTQ on a Mustang Dynamometer. Our calculations translate this to 550-560HP and 600+TQ at the crank, all on stock turbos, bolt-on hardware, fuel and tuning.

Thank you for your input. This certainly makes for interesting and compelling conversation on how to squeeze every bit of performance on the B9 platform.

I felt like Loe was bringing an interesting point, not trying to hijack teknika's thread!

Hijack away! Haha. I feel that this is actually more of a strategic conversation on helping each other become faster! I am all for it! Let us all help each other break records! I am waiting for the most opportune DA to unleash our most recent tune but the Florida heat is coming on strong. I believe 10s on stock turbos, bolt-on hardware, excellent fuel and fine tuning should get us there. After that, the turbos are getting swapped out and then aiming for mid to low 10s.

Loe, I greatly appreciate your insight as an experienced racer who has broken the 10 second barrier. I will definitely research our potential need for the Autotech rod should the car's thirst for fuel demand it in the future.

Alright! Time for "skunk work" reveals and updates!

“Find Strength In Weakness”

“Weakness of attitude becomes weakness of character.” - Albert Einstein

Last January, while participating at the @pbocmotorsports WinterFest HPDE Event at Sebring, we discovered weaknesses in the #b9rs5 . While some will often deny or ignore such critical findings, others will find a way to find strength in weakness. Project Mystique is not one that will sit idly by, wait and/or hope for progress. Instead, we search for avenues and opportunities to research, develop and assist others with similar goals and passions in mind.

Enter @034motorsport ! We are proud to integrate this industry leader’s finest components into Project Mystique in order to add the chassis strength and rigidity needed to the critical weak points during rigorous track sessions.

We are incredibly grateful to @034motorsport and @slowaudi for believing in our passion to build a truly unique B9 RS5 in Project Mystique. Thank you for giving us the opportunity to be part of the 034Motorsport team and represent this phenomenal brand both on and off the track.

Stay tuned and follow the progress as we install, test fitment and track tolerances of all of the finest components 034Motorsports has to offer for the B9 RS5!

“Skunk Works Reveal” | 034Motorsport Part 1

Perhaps one of the most important, but often neglected aspects of building a well-rounded and balanced project vehicle is that of chassis rigidity and suspension dynamics.

The saying, “Power is nothing without control” holds quite true for Project Mystique and our aspirations to be competitive at the circuits and dominant on the drag strip. Thus, control cannot exist without fortification, rigidity and strength.

With that in mind, we sought to integrate chassis and suspension components from an industry leader. Enter @034motorsport .

We are incredibly fortunate and grateful to 034Motorsport and @slowaudi for facilitating this partnership to showcase their full arsenal of high quality chassis and suspension components for the #b9rs5 , which include: 034Motorsport Front Strut Brace, Rear Subframe Mount Insert Kit, Rear Differential Mount Insert Kit, Dynamic+ Sway Bar Kit, Adjustable Front and Rear Sway Bar End Links and Transmission Mount Insert.

We look forward to testing our newfound control, rigidity and strength with these new upgrades at our next track event at @sebringraceway in May. Stay tuned tomorrow for post-installation pictures and impressions on the 034Motorsport Skunk Works Reveal Part 2!

“Skunk Works Reveal” | 034Motorsport Part 2

As promised, part 2 comprises of post-installation media and initial driving impressions. I cannot thank @034motorsport and @slowaudi enough for assisting Project Mystique further enhance its chassis and suspension. We are confident these new components will provide dividends in cornering balance, handling, stability and rigidity at the track.

Initial driving impressions are quite noticeable, especially in Dynamic Mode. The most prominent changes are reflected on steering response and feedback. There is a definite increase in transmitted road data through the steering wheel and at all four corners. The chassis and suspension also feel more tolerant to high speed cornering with less overall sway during spirited driving. We will not be able to fully assess this until we are at the track and stress test under higher G-forces. While the B9 RS5 is classed as a GT with more mass to transfer through the apexes, Project Mystique already feels more nimble and responsive overall.

Being able to compare high quality billet aluminum components versus its OEM counterparts proves that going the extra mile in upgrading the smallest components can in fact yield the greatest improvements and pay the largest dividends. Bang/Buck. And when creating a unique build like Project Mystique, attention to the smallest of details is key!

Are these available to purchase?

I had a brand new set of OEM pads/rotors installed in my 2018 RS5 right before my last HPDE, and they barely lasted 2 track days. Planning to swap in track pads/rotors next time, but having a hard time finding any for the B9.

No need for PMs. The steering wheel was purchased from an overseas manufacturer via a member of this forum. However, I would prefer not to disclose the name of the company or member as the transaction went far from smooth. Rather than talking badly about anyone, I prefer simply to not recommend either.

“Skunk Works Reveal” | GiroDisc Part 1

It is easy to go fast, but stopping is much harder. I learned this in quick and dramatic fashion while cooking the brakes at over 100mph approaching Sebring’s T7 at our last event in January. The feeling of your brakes failing and falling flat to the floor is an unsettling feeling that I do not care to revisit. Because of this, I have dedicated months of research and collaboration to build a bulletproof braking system to optimize the current system on the #b9rs5 . Though the stock brakes are potent, they are simply not up to the task of consistent rigorous hard braking during track racing.

A wise instructor once told me, “the fastest racers, are also the best brakers.” And clearly, you can’t brake your best without the best brakes. So, this ladies and gentlemen, is the product of Project Mystique working alongside an industry expert in high performance braking.

As promised, another jaw-dropping, ground-breaking reveal has arrived. Enter @girodisc ! Project Mystique alongside @audinorthorlando is proud to have collaborated in the R&D with GiroDisc to produce the world’s first Audi B9 RS5 High Performance 2-Piece Slotted Race Rotors. We will have these beauties installed prior to our next track event at @sebringraceway in May and will provide impressions from daily and track performance standpoints.

Stay tuned!

“Bulletproof”

Needless to say, the ability to stop on a dime from triple digit speeds is of the utmost importance. We learned this rather dramatically at our last track event at @sebringraceway . Losing your brakes when you absolutely need it the most is an experience I would rather not relive. After that day, I vowed to build a bulletproof braking system in Project Mystique.

Enter @girodisc . With assistance from @audinorthorlando , @brokestatusjayfay , @m1r5ad , @mjfkid8 and @theaudiconcierge , we have collaborated with these wizards of braking to develop the world’s first aftermarket High Performance 2-piece slotted rotors with anodized hats for the #b9rs5 on Project Mystique. Combined with the best brake fluid money can buy in @castrolusa ‘s SRF and Cobalt XR2 Track Brake Pads from @034motorsport and @slowaudi , we will test the potential of the B9 RS5 platform with this newfound stopping power at @pbocmotorsports HPDE this weekend.
🚗💨🏁
Stay tuned for upcoming track impressions!

Yes, the two-piece slotted high performance rotors are available directly through GiroDisc. The Cobalt XR2 Track Pads were purchased directly from 034Motorsport. We have confirmed directly on Project Mystique that the B9 A5/S5 pads are the identical shape for the B9 RS5.

Very helpful, thank you. Will you also be using non-OEM rotors/pads in the rear as well? If so, would be interested in which ones. And when you say B9 A5/S5 pads fit the B9 RS5, is that just fronts or rears also? Thanks again!

You are welcome! I have been using the OEM rotors and pads in the rears as I have not had the need to change them until recently. The OEM rear brakes held up fairly well after multiple punishing track weekends at Sebring, but the rear pads have finally started to thin out. I will be installing Cobalt XR3 Track Pads tomorrow in preparation for my next track event at Sebring in two weeks and will upgrade to GiroDisc Two-Piece Slotted High Performance Rotors after this event.

“Some things are worth waiting for.”

Paint Protection Film, otherwise known as PPF, is NOT one of them. If you value the appearance, condition, luster and quality of your vehicle’s paint, then PPF is an absolute must! And even more so, as Project Mystique sees her fair share of daily driven and weekend track use.

Thank you Gerald at @orlandotintingservices as well as Shawn and Raymond for the careful, flawless and phenomenal work of protecting Project Mystique for many years to come! It was just in time for our track weekend at Sebring!

Project Mystique received the complete Track Package protecting the entire front end, headlights, mirrors and A-pillars with all corners exquisitely wrapped, along with 50% Llumar CTX on the windshield to keep the Florida heat and glare out of the cabin. Lastly, OTS installed the final Black Optic RS5 side emblem pieces to complete her stealth look. We will be back soon enough to have her completely wrapped along with some special exterior aesthetic components.

“Finding Balance” | 034Motorsport Product Testing

“Balance is not something you find. It is something you create.”

Last weekend’s track event at Sebring International Raceway found Project Mystique handling more responsively with increased data transfer through steering as noted during our daily driving impressions. The chassis and subframe is significantly firmer and rigid allowing for more confident weight transfer with reduced overall sway. While daily driving impressions provided hints of the aforementioned changes, these are more pronounced at speed while pushing >1G in all directions through Sebring’s 17 turns and 3.74 miles. Many thanks to @034motorsport and @slowaudi for assisting Project Mystique create the balance needed to conquer Sebring.

Balance is only part of Project Mystique’s new tricks. She discovered newfound braking power thanks to @girodisc B9 RS5 2-Piece Slotted Rotors, Cobalt XR2 Track Pads and @castrolusa SRF React Racing Brake Fluid. I am ecstatic to report that braking has improved with greater initial and consistent bite. However, despite the increased stopping power, braking endurance is not solely a matter of friction, but a combination of factors including: heat production, dissipation, ventilation and weight reduction. With this in mind, another “skunk works” project has begun.

Hello! So, the Pure Turbos are in and running strong. I have not updated details regarding the Pure Turbos on here yet because I am updating this build thread in chronological order. We have done so much with Project Mystique that it can be challenging to update it all in one sitting. Therefore, I do it in small updates. If you want to see more up-to-date details including dyno results, please check out the Project Mystique Instagram (@importeknika). We will be hitting the track on the next cool day. So stay tuned.

I wonder if they make any that fit the S4. We share the same caliper but smaller disks.

Hi Arnon,

I've been following this project with great interest...you're doing amazing things!

I noticed you chose 285/30/20s vs the stock 275/30/20s on 20" stock rims.

Are there any issues with fitment/clearances/etc? Girodisc aftermarket rotors don't affect anything either, right?

Thanks and looking forward to updates!

Happy Sunday everyone. I know, I have been slacking on here. I will cut to the chase. Some big things happened last Saturday, November 16, 2019, while debuting Project Mystique at our first official car show at FixxFest at Bradenton Motorsports Park. Many thanks to Josh at AWE Tuning, Ali and Justin at FixxFest/UroTuning. We were invited to showcase the amazing AWE Tuning B9 RS5 product line at the UroTuning booth. Along with showcasing the entire arsenal of go-fast, sound aggressive products including: AWE Tuning AirGate Carbon Fiber Intake, AWE Tuning High-Performance Catalysts and AWE Tuning Non-Resonated Touring Edition Cat-back Exhaust, we also managed to set a new personal record and new platform (B9 RS5) world record bringing us literally at the doorstep of breaking into the 10s. I know many of you will be wondering what all has been done to the car, so please refer back to the first page of this build thread for the most current modification sheet. Of most interest seems to be the tuning aspect. So, I am proud to reveal that this new record pass was achieved on the Burger Motorsports JB4 standard MAP#5 with no methanol. The temperatures were in the chilly 60 degree range. We initially had some challenges with traction due to the cooler weather and lack-luster track prep, but after the 4th pass and throttle management, we finally broke our previous personal record of 11.242 @ 122 MPH.

The B9 RS5’s 10 second potential is at the cusp of realization. We posted a new personal and platform record of 11.041 @ 122.91 MPH with a 60’ of 1.648s at Bradenton Motorsports Park today and still on a JB4 MAP#5 with no methanol. I was ready to make another attempt until the track was shut down prematurely. We will be working on a custom MAP#6 with methanol delivery this week as icing on the cake to cement #ProjectMystique ‘s entry into the 10s territory and all before introducing an ECU tune. 🏎💨🏁💪

P.S. Also, we are in full-trim with nothing removed except a race seat with a spare tire and on 20” wheels and DOT street tires. So if we really wanted to, 10s can be had by stripping the car down, but the point is to be in the 10s as a full-trim grand tourer.

Check out some of the photos and videos below and feel free to ask any questions. Enjoy!

Just a friendly reminder, balancing multiple social media channels is difficult for me to manage alongside my full time career, so if you want the latest and greatest on #ProjectMystique, please follow us on Instagram where I prioritize project updates: @importeknika (https://www.instagram.com/importeknika/)

That is correct. The drone is eliminated by the 180 Technology mufflers and not the resonators. I assume AWE recommends the resonators because of how loud the entire exhaust system is without them. As you can see/hear in one of the videos, the car can be heard 1/4 mile away. I have other WOT videos at Sebring on this thread that might give you a clearer picture of just how loud the exhaust is.

Immediately after the methanol installation, we dyno'ed and tuned Project Mystique at Crucial Motorsports Group with record breaking results. Many thanks to Burger Motorsports, George at Burger Tuning and my private tuner for these incredible results. Our 2019 goal of 600HP/600TQ at crank is achieved and surpassed! Now, we are finally beginning to see the potential of the B9 RS5 unleashed. 10s SOON! On to 2020 and new goals!

Wowza, those are impressive #s. I think you'll be well into the 10s at that power level. Did you do pull in manual mode and what gear?
