View Full Version : Hey all! Also 2007 A4 Build Thread

As the title says, hello, I'm of course new here. I just picked up a 2007 A4 for about $700 with the intention of doing a minor restoration to it and rocking it for a few years. I'm posting some before pictures, I've got a ton of plans with this old girl. First things first, it appears as though I've got either a broken strut or spring on the rear left, haven't gotten it on a lift yet to check, what's the best option for a cheap (and I'm emphasizing cheap here) mild drop? I'm planning on driving it in the winter so I don't want to go too aggressive, maybe an inch or so. Of course, any suggestions on anything else are welcome!

In fairness, it's pretty rough around the edges. It's also got about 215k on the clock. It does run and drive basically perfect which is amazing, I bought it sight unseen from an auction so I was pleasantly surprised to find out that it doesn't need much mechanically. It'll need some work to make it right but I don't mind, lets me make it my own in the process.

That is s hell of s score for 700
But first things first.
Do a timing belt and cam follower before doing anything else. If the cam follower is punched through. More may be required

Welcome to the Audi family! Great score for the price, especially sight-unseen. I bought my A6 that way but not from auction (thankfully) and it turned out well.
The running joke (sorta) is "4 rings, 4x the price". That said, if you take care of the car, she will take care of you. Iceman's got you on the right track in terms of ensuring everything is mechanically sound. Make sure nothing is leaking either, coolant or oil.
Suspension-wise, for cheap, you can do either OE struts with some lowering springs, or a few other options. ST coilovers are popular, and I think the Koni FSD kit is pretty good too. I never ran either,. I had the JOM blueline kit which I could never get at a good, even ride height. But for a bit more money, I got the Vogtland GT1 kit from achtuning and it was fantastic.
Good luck, and I look forward to seeing the resto!

Do timing belt, water pump and rollers for piece of mind. Cam follower and a tune up just to get it right for cheap. Also a carbon clean fo gain performance.

That's very relevant to my interests, I gotta check what I actually need for the console but that may be all I need. I was originally planning on swapping the engine out for a lower mileage one but damn I'm impressed with how solid this thing is at 215k so I may do some tune up stuff to it and just roll with it.

$700!
As long it drives and road legal that really a good catch.
Welcome and enjoy !
To answer your first question, if you don’t want to drop much got with suspension kit, Vogtland is a good option.
Before that and as someone suggested get the timing belt done and cam follower checked and may be replaced as well.

Broken stock rear springs are pretty common. Look for a set of sport springs someone took off for coilovers.

I have all 4 sport springs that I swapped out at 90k. They are in great shape and would lower your car slightly if used with the shocks and struts linked below. I also have the seat back you might want plus some other random parts. I would be willing to part with these for cheap. +1 to the cam follower and the timing belt. And by do this immediately, do within the next week or two. The risk is not worth waiting. The cam followers on the cars wear through quickly. I recommend changing every 20-30k. Some people go longer, some less. You may also want to get the passenger airbag swapped (takata). It’s on recall right now so it’s free through the dealer. When your doing the timing belt I also recommend replacing the idler pulley. It’s a $30 part and is virtually impossible to do without the front off. I would also recommend flushing all your fluids, engine oil, brake, transmission rear diff, coolant (will happen during tb change anyways). Check the valve cover for leaks and give the motor mounts a peak. They are fluid filled and at 215k have likely failed.

I'm probably going to end up getting a parts car to feed this car next week, I'm eyeing one that I like a lot of the parts off of. I tried to get it on my lift today but kept getting interrupted with other stuff, hopefully tomorrow I'll get it up in the air and have a look at the underside. It sounds like it's got an aftermarket exhaust of some kind so I'd like to figure out what that's all about too. I'm definitely going to be doing the timing belt and cam followers since everyone seems to be mentioning them lol. I also just ordered a bunch of fun toys for the build, hopefully next week I'll start getting some new stuff to play with.

Things are starting to come together, I ordered a timing belt and cam follower, both will be here Wednesday. In the mean time, I've got a 2006 VW Passat Luxury that I'm tearing down, has anyone put the seats from that gen Passat into an A4? The seats look cush as hell so I'm going to give it a shot. Any advice on wiring before I tackle it?

You have four connectors in the Audi:
Green: seat heating if installed
Red: power (if you have memory seats then it wired through this one as well)
Yellow: airbag Seat belt buckle.
Black: seat belt buckle.
https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20181010/b17cee9ffa5426419fcebb7483fa8b1b.png
Now I reckon VAG group will use the same connectors.
What important is the airbag.

I made my first step forward on this car today, I had a set of old A8/S6 wheels in rough shape laying around so I refinished them in a random mixture of black/grey metallic paints I had laying around and was saving for a cool set of wheels. Seriously can't wait to get these on the car, but here's the before during and after.

Yes I shot them with an hvlp gun with the random color mix and a 2k clear. The in progress ones before they're black are just sanded down to get rid of the imperfections. I'm waiting for the paint to fully cure before I put them on the tire machine, I definitely don't want to scratch the new finish.

Also took your guys' advice and I'm doing the timing belt. The one I removed didn't look too bad and it's clearly been done before, but it's a good piece of mind for me to be able to reset the clock to 0 with a brand new one. I don't know if it's the picture but it looks off center to me. People are going to say you're trying to make it look like an R8. In my personal opinion though it reminds me for some reason of those old cop cars with it there. I think there are many other experimentations you can try. Color matched to the car I've seen that a couple times and it's a good contrast. You could also try putting it on the center bar of the grill instead since you don't have a front plate there. Try it and if you like it then that's all that matters. It's your car and your money but if you're asking I'm pretty sure the majority concensus which I agree with is it doesn't work there.

It's just the picture, it's not off-center. I definitely did get the idea from the R8, the emblem is smaller than the normal grille emblem from the A4, it's the trunk emblem from a D3 A8. I figured I'd give it a shot for now, I'll probably move it back to the grille in a few weeks. Fingers crossed I'm getting a black parts car in with a good hood which I'm going to CF wrap and put on, and the emblem will look like garbage over CF, so it'll move back to the grille.

I'm probably not going to color match the grille emblem because of the red quattro badge in the lower grille, I think it'd look weird with blue audi rings and red quattro badging. I'll probably just use my chrome rings from the original A4 grille. The black emblem won't work on the hood with a CF wrapped hood, and I tried it as chrome and it looked really bad (the one on there now is just dipped black for a quick idea of what it'd look like).
@Dalmation I get the emblem being pretty controversial, I'm not sold on it fully myself. You really don't like the headlights though? I'm super stoked on them I think they look so much better than stock, it's hard to see in the pic but they're almost a black chrome finish on the inside of the housing. The LED bar is not as bright as I would have liked but my understanding is that's pretty common, I'm probably going to retrofit brighter LEDs in next spring.

When I bought my car it had some CHEAP after market headlights on it with a HID kit inside. They never worked correctly, flickered and pulsed and I hated the way they looked (ruined the B7 lines) and promptly swapped them out for factory units. The issue with the LEDs not being bright is that the bulb doesn't protrude through the housing enough to have the reflective surface inside help magnify them.
as for suspension, I recommend OE sport springs with B5 front perches... that will give a nice stance with plenty of drive-ability.
I like those black wheels against that Blue body
here are some other parts that I put on mine immediately after I purchased it with 68k on it...
fuel filter
red top coils or any new coils for that matter, red just look better :)
plugs (i use copper and change them every other oil change)
snub mount
maintenance since I have owned it 2.5 years....
timing belt, water pump, pulleys, accessory belt
thermostat housing (twice) don't cheap out the first time :/
multiple cam followers, none had crazy wear, i'm just being careful
rear coolant flange
rebuilt vacuum pump (kit from RKXtech)
PCV block off
front cv boots (a few of them....) now one of my rears is ripped...DOH!
Auto Tiptronic fluid change to REDLINE equivalent
Arm rest cover, now my replacement is broken....
just had the airbag recall done last week
repaired leaky washer fluid bottle.
I love my A4 but she is needy at times.... I am soon to tackle a sagging headliner and some new suspension/drivetrain parts due to age...

Never get offended about others opinion. No one likes the same thing or the world would be boring. Everyone has an opinion and when you post on a forum you open yourself up to those opinions. Some people respect the hard work of a mod even if they don’t like the mod itself others don’t. Meh that’s life. All that really matters is how you feel after you spend the time doing the mod. It’s the whole reason to mod.
I had a B5 Passat on RS4 reps with Audi center caps. I had people on forums, people at meets, people on the street! telling me I should remove the center caps it’s not an Audi. The VW center caps looked like ass, plastic and shitty looking. The Audi center caps fit the rims perfectly. I didn’t even respond to most of the people.

If you want to see a stock looking 2005.5 B7 A4 Avant, Google images has you covered. 😉
I didn’t even want to get into this with you which is the reason why I just replied nope. It doesn’t look good. You took all the detail out of the wheel and placed negative attention to your hood with an out of place looking badge. You basically made your Audi look like a Jetta rolling around on steel wheels without hub caps.
I’ve spent the last year or so slowly focusing on a little power bump and have left wheels and suspension alone because if I spend the time and money on those mods, I want them to look great, not just average. I want them to enhance the look of the car, not detract from it like your mods have done. And it doesn’t matter if it’s a 5,000 dollar car or a 50,000 dollar car. Anything worth doing is worth doing well or why even bother? You did a great job of painting your wheels and probably did a professional grade job but all that attention to detail you put into the work equally took away from the look of the car.
I also don’t post pics of my average looking car or call it a “build”. Even with the amount of money I have invested in the performance mods I have done. My car isn’t a build. Painted OEM wheels and sketchy badge on your hood isn’t a build.I don’t need the attention or crave the approval. And I don’t get upset if someone dislikes what I’ve done to my car. I couldn’t care less. But since you asked, here’s a pic of my car with some wheels the previous owner picked out and I haven’t been able to change out because I haven’t decided on a wheel that will enhance the look instead of distract from it 😀 I’ll probably go with a flow formed lightweight wheel, I just haven’t decided on a size or brand yet. Pick away at it. I couldn’t care less.

Point by point, the center caps are on their way in, haven't arrived or been painted yet. The camera on my V20 is old and pretty bad so it doesn't pick up the color on the car very well at all, but if you look at the picture of when they were painted, you'll see they're not black but rather a dark grey, they pop pretty well in the sun, not that we ever get sun here in NY. You may like it when the center caps are added, you may not. Full disclosure I do wish the color had come out a bit lighter, it looked lighter in the can, but it was a random mix of greys and I wanted to use it on something. These will end up being winter wheels, so I'm not going to bother respraying them. The emblem on the hood was an afterthought after adding the grille, which is what I said when I posted it, and I've already removed it and put it back in the grille.
If you don't consider your car a build with all the mods you have listed in your signature, I'm not sure what would need to be done to a car to be considered a build by your definition. I've been using this thread as an ongoing build thread, it's nowhere near done, and the cosmetic mods have been a few fun cheap things to do to it before winter hits. I didn't want to make a new thread every time I did something to the car, which is what someone craving attention and approval would do, but rather I wanted to keep it all in one thread to keep the forum clean. It's a winter rat, I'm treating it as a toy for now (it may become something more serious, I'm quickly falling in love with this car), to date I have less into the whole car than you have in your turbo alone, we're clearly looking at our cars differently. One of the reasons I enjoy owning cheap cars like the B7 is to experiment with things and see what I like and what I don't, which is a lot easier to do when I can get a new pair if headlights for $200 or a grille for $40. I have other cars I take seriously, this isn't one of them. I post this stuff not for approval or attention, but because I thought this place was a community, and people might want to see what it looks like. I did a google image search for a b7 emblem on the hood, couldn't find anything. I figured that was because it didn't look good, but why not try it, it cost me under a dollar worth of 3m emblem tape and a few coats of plastidip.
You might as well not have posted a picture of your car at all, the only thing I can see is the wheels, which you've already guarded against ridicule by saying they came with the car and you haven't changed them yet, so no point in picking on them. Best I can say is a nice car like that should probably be parked in a garage lol. I don't want to fight with you, and I didn't expect such a long and thought out response (especially from someone who claims he couldn't care less). The only reason I replied at all is the wheel comment took me by surprise. I expected to take shit for the emblem and possibly the headlights, but the wheels came out great and I'm pretty proud of them, even though they don't have the center caps yet.
I'd love to see a build thread of your car, some of the things you've done are things I plan to do to mine, and pictures of what you've done, how they went in, how they've performed, and whether or not they met your expectations is exactly what I'd be looking to see on this forum. Unless you want to just be a free mechanic to a front page full of vendors and "this is my first post, my car doesn't work and I'm too cheap to take it to a mechanic, please help", which is fine too. Like I said, I don't want to fight with you and you seem to be a pretty big deal around here, so I'm just going to let this thread die. I don't want to attention crave and take away from more interesting threads about oil leaks, background noise, comfort module locations, and electrical problems.

Not really offended, just surprised. I expected shit for the headlights and especially the hood emblem, the wheels came out really nice though.

Dude, I’m a nobody anywhere. Especially here. My opinion means nothing. I didn’t even want to get into it with you but some dope pulled me in to it. 😀
My car is hardly a build. Just a basic A4 with some bolt ons that make me like the car more. Some of the guys here have more into building their motor than I have into all my mods 🤣🤣
I don’t really care what you do to your car. Those thoughts went through my head when I saw the pics but I didn’t feel the need to expand on them beyond nope. Someone else brought me back into it. Now that we are talking about it personally, you deserved to understand where my comments were coming from. That’s probably my fault and for that I’m sorry. I should have given you courtesy of explaining my opinion more clearly from the beginning.

Just want to say that I have been enjoying this thread and the OPs updates. I may or may not like the direction he decides to take the car, but I don’t think that’s what matters. I think it’s just nice to see what people are doing with their cars.
I vote you keep the updates coming. I also vote that if someone doesn’t have something nice to say, that they just keep it to themselves.

In the grand scheme of things the mods you do need to matter to only one person. When I had my Passat. I loved it, the guys in the car club liked it. When we went to car meets tons of times the Audi guys looked down on the cars because they were just VWs. They considered it less than Audi or wanna be Audi in the case of my car. We’ve got A4s and guys with RS4s would consider us having the basic poor man’s Audi. There will always be a different group that thinks differently. So in the end the joy you get doing the mod and enjoyment you get driving your car is ALL that matters. My car engine-wise is stock and the mods I’ve done aren’t even that impressive. However it makes a hell of a difference for me when I drive my car.

I ended up selling the car, got $3500 for it so I ended up making a decent profit on it. To my knowledge it's still running great. Here's a pic of it before I sold it, probably gonna pick up a B8 at some point but I've got an Infiniti G37 and a Lexus GS350 I'm working on building right now.
