Has to be an exotic (and the S4 will become the winter ''beater'') . This is the perfect sedan daily driver car a person can buy. No reason to buy something in the same category.

Considering a new G70 3.3T, Audi A5SB and the new BMW G20 3 series. I'm ready for something new, but keep getting held back because my S4 may be the last manual car I ever own. I may be comfortable converting the S4 into a 2nd car, once the value drops under 10K. I would drop the collision coverage and drive it occasionally.

If I were to buy a NEW car it would probably be an M2 competition. Not likely I will ever buy a new car again. Used Macan might be on my radar.

Given how low the value of these cars have become I honestly plan to just hold onto this thing for a long time. I mean what would my ‘13 S4 with 75k sell for? $20k? Can’t really find a worthy successor for that amount of money to replace it with and the driving experience is way better than $20k. Someone mentioned a cayman, I have a cayman and the S4/Cayman (insert any other dedicated sports car here) is really tough to beat.
I’ve thought about what car could cover all the bases of both cars. Really only the M2 or 911 but neither would be as practical as the S4 or as nimble as the cayman.
If you have the space for 2 cars I highly recommend a full on sports car to compliment the amazing DD capability of the S4. Hell for $50k all in you could grab a decent S4 & a decent 987.1 cayman.

I've actually been thinking about this pretty seriously for the last couple of months.

I bought the S4 back when it was my only vehicle and needed something that did well in the snow, had a manual transmission, yet was still fun to drive. I've since added two trucks to the fleet, so those took over winter duty.

I've been going back and forth between a '16 Cayman GT4 in Sapphire Blue with the manual transmission, or a 997.1 GT3 with a manual transmission. Both are about the same price right now, the GT4 is of course a lot newer vehicle and some can even be found with a CPO warranty. My only concern is that if the next gen GT4 comes out with a manual and a 6 cylinder, the GT4 will depreciate a fair amount more. The GT3 seems to have pretty much hit to bottom of the depreciation curve and with future generations only available with a turbo motor, the prices should only increase from here.

I went with the m2 competition to balance out my stage 1 s4. I thought long and hard about selling the s4 to make room for the m2, but I just couldn't do it yet. Keeping her for at least this winter and likely will try and keep both as 2 season each cars as long as I can. I think they are a perfect balance. I've only driven the m2 for maybe 90 miles and get it back from wrap/tint/ceramic coat tomorrow. They drive VERY differently which is an obvious statement.

My s4 is a 2014 6MT with just over 24k miles. Last year I did AWE touring exhaust, s-flo intake, H&R sways, GIAC stage 1 tune, and currently waiting for bilstein to get their sh*t together as I pre-ordered the resumption of PSS10 manufacturing. If I ever do decide to sell her, I'll post here first. I know I'll regret it as soon as I let her go, though. I think my new plan is to hoard fun manuals. My wife is not a fan of that idea.

It really is. And the mods are endless. You can create something very tailored to your style. It’s a real drivers car. I’ve only owned AP1s and that 9k redline is the tits. Wish I never had gotten rid of my second one. Berlina black with red interior. Low miles. It was pristine. Damn the memories.

Dealer offered me $20K for my '13 S4 with a nice set of wheels and all the Prestige toys other than driver aids. This was not quite a year ago. It had 80K on it at that time, no issues. Decided to keep it, now has 91K on it. Still love driving it. Bought a '16 Cayman S 6spd manual with lots of toys, (sport suspension, exhaust and sport chrono) as a summer fun car. Will just run the S4 as long as it will run, it's a great DD and does well in the snow here in MN.

+1. 911 GT3 6MT or 911 GTS. S4 will be kept for sure. Extremely reliable in my case, fun to drive, quiet when it needs to be and selling it for 17k would make no sense. Keeping it forever.

If you are tired of it sure why not? You can always get another if you desire to have it again. Hence me having 2 s2000s and 2 cayenne turbos. Loved both of those and wouldn’t be surprised if I have either again at some point of my life. Love the s4 so far and it suits my lifestyle of highway driving, snowy weather, kids in the back sometimes. I plan to keep s4 unless I make significantly more money. Then I’m sure I will itch to buy a toy like the s2k again or classic car. Or I’d go balls out with an s7 or gtr. I have a feeling my wife would prefer I have 1 car due to storage issues.

I disgress, at least, in Canada, I would say the car depreciate about 3k ( or less) per year. S4 are sought due to being usuable all years long. (i.e: in Florida, I'm sure a AWD is not considered as much as it is here with deep snow)

Sorry. It's just the Xpel Ultimate clear wrap. I was thinking about stealth for the "frozen" look but decided against it. It's the Hockenheim Silver (the launch color), 6MT, dark wheels, and orange stitching on the interior. I'll post some pics when I get it tomorrow.

I've always wanted an e90/92 M3. Coming from a couple 4.2 Audi's I miss the raw N/A V8 feel. As we all say, the S4 is the best DD for the money however it lacks the "drama".

Another nice option would be keep the S4 and do a C5 Z06. The C5Z is a hell of a bang for the buck..

Though i'm only 40 years of age and someone brought up in the era of the muscle car. I am only leaning towards another manual transmission car. When i sell my rare 2015 6MT Audi S4 now stock but soon to be modded, it would only be a Porsche 911 given that i live in Canada and have 6 months of shitty weather, black ice and snow.

I have 2 working legs and arms and still enjoy rowing my own gears and won't submit to the automakers pressure of driving a neutered automatic (unless in the form of an SUV or full lux senior citizen trimmed car). Options are becoming fewer for people like myself and truthfully, i may end up buying a Mustang/Camaro and outfit it with studded winters to continue getting my fix.

I've driven amazing automobiles with auto trans and they always let me down (Ferrari 458 Italia, Porsche 911T, Audi RS7, Audi RS3, BMW M3 Auto, Cadillac CTS-V, etc), they are all crap. I believe i've grown up in the wrong generation and am saddened and cant really do much about it. I will continue to search for those MT unicorns where they exist and enjoy the en dof an amazing automotive era. I will shed many tears for those seeking increased 10ths of seconds through granny shifting computer generated transmissions knowing those people don't know what they're missing.

I post this as it is a 10 year build and i'm not a mechanic. The ability to run 12's at near 130mph in a car hand build and shifted is amazing. It is a daily driver and i plan to safely modify every other MT car i have so it's a better version of itself. The feeling of rowing your own gears can not be replicated with any current auto car. Automotive journalists often indicate the same feeling.

I'm REALLY considering a 2015 Z06. I drove a customers after doing some maintenance and I was VERY impressed with its performance. Forever I thought I would be going for an R8 V10 at this stage of my life, but having driven both, the R8 just seems slow in comparison and not nearly as exciting.

You guys going from S4's into R8's and Mclaren's must have received a nice raise over the last few years!

On my list are S6, RS3, M3, ATS-V, CTS-V, C63, E63(all slightly used) or maybe even a GolfR or GTI. Not sure if I can give up the 6MT.

Nice choice! I love the new body of the 2019! If they offer the 400HP T8 plug-in hybrid version, I'd definitely be interested.

Currently have an '02 Z06, '14 Raptor, '14 Grand Cherokee SRT8, '15 S4 and wife has a '16 Jetta. she has informed me that the next car we buy will be a new or pre-owned RS3. She will continue daily-ing her Jetta and the RS3 will be her toy. Next car I buy, however, will be a C6 Corvette ZR1.

My next car will be JDM, I have wanted a GTR ever since I put a turbo on my g35. With the prices of GTR's are coming down, a 2012+ is looking more and more attractive.

I calculated pricing for the 2019 S4 & S5 on the cars direct site and I think it says the Premium Plus model with the included virtual cockpit is essentially $2500 less than last year? If so, I may finally upgrade.
Update: pricing is about the same as last year because the P+ includes the virtual cockpit/nav with a package price increase.

Like a few others, I recently weighed trading in my S4 after 6 years of ownership. It has been retired from my daily driving slot (that goes to my Duramax Colorado), but I couldn't find anything that I liked driving as much as this little monster. So I spent my budget on a host of performance, audio and aesthetic mods to get the car set up just how I wanted it, and decided to keep it. In 4-5 years, we'll see again.

The wife is taking a Big 3 Consulting job 200 miles away in Houston (I'm in Austin). She has driven an old TSX through B-school and is ready for something else. I'll be driving it down to her on Thursdays and back on Mondays, so there's a lot of highway cruising. The TDI A6 and 335d are her favorites for their performance dynamics and fuel economy at the moment. She saw an Aston Martin and asked how much they cost. That was some sticker shock, lol. Someday.

It's very hard for me to even daydream about a new car, in part because I love my 6MT. I've only owned MT cars and really enjoy the engagement. I also feel like the '12 B8 is a wonderful specimen car to keep both with design (first-gen LED lights), styles, and knock on wood, most kinks worked out. I have another 5 years on this car most likely, so I can afford to see what's next.

I really like the virtual cockpit feel of the new Audi's, but I really dislike how cluttered and "too fancy" the S4/S5 look. Maybe the 9.5 models (or time) will improve this for me. I wonder if there is a "limited edition" manual that might come our way, or a potential for European Delivery in my future.

If I am "stuck" with an automatic, I'd look at the SQ5 or the S3 as a daily driver... maybe even a CPO RS3 (price is too high). Those would likely be at the x.5 generation for me.

I also need an inexpensive "project car" I can buy to teach my kids to drive stick. Something slower, but fun to drive... no way the S4 is a teching vehicle. My brother-in-law had a first-gen Miata that fit the bill... only a few thousand to buy.

I also wonder what a first-gen M3 would be like (I don't know bimmer model designations)... always loved those as a kid.

If I am blessed to afford it, RS7 or AMG E63S.

Not sure what my needs will be in a few years. I currently have 75k and not sure how long I will keep my S4, though I'd like to keep it at least to 120k when my warranty expires.

If I make it big down the road, I want a 1998-2002 NSX to sit along side my S4. If I were where I am now, career-wise, 10 years ago, I'd probably have an NSX instead since they could be had for 35K at the time, then the hype got big when Gen 2 was announced. Now everyone wants like $60k.

Amazon 10 years ago, good choice... me, I think a 100$ in bitcoin 10 years ago for 4 cents and sold in December of 2017 for $6,594,267 would have allowed me to get in to amazon nicely but hindsight.

I'm sort of treading water in anticipation of the g80 m3 but having just sold my S4 months ago I must admit I'm rocking a 5th gen accord wagon right now.

yup. Nothing else...

Or Evo 8 or NSX.

I've been sorta obsessed with Datsun 240 with LS1 TT (67) recently. Love how Datsun looks.

Then again, that bright red Ford F250 looked really good to me today. I'll put some wood lay bed, wood trim, chrome it out, and lower it.

I hate being too poor. I would love a restro-mod 69 Camero SS with RS package. But I miss my Evo too, because at that resto-mod money, that evo can be awesome.

Already pulled the trigger on a '18 M3 Comp DCT. Really nice car, albeit a bit generic looking exterior. Red interior leather, seats, and understated dash is awesome - better than Merc or Audi offerings IMO. Car actually runs much better driven hard than not, and handles WAY better than did my '10 S4. I do miss Quattro though. Big time. Thought a lot about the RS5, but couldn't live with a 2 dr or $10-15k over the M. I'll keep the M until the warranty expires or until Audi launches another RS I can't live without.

Next summer, I plan on moving to something new. Currently, I plan on cross shopping the new M3 sedan to the RS5 Sportback sedan. Of course, this is assuming the rumors are true that we'll be getting the RS5 sedan in the U.S. If that doesn't happen, I'll still give the S5 sportback sedan a serious look.

Hopefully by next summer APR, EPL or another tuner will have finally cracked the new ECU's for the new S4/S5/S6. Given what we are seeing out of the 5-cyl turbo RS3 with a tune, I have very high hopes that an upgraded tune for the S5 sportback would really wake it up to meet or exceed the power of a tuned M3.

I think the next car for me will have to be an RS5 or a newer S4. I love the RS5 because of the V8 but the S4 is such a great all purpose car I think i might have to just upgrade to a newer one. The B8 will definitely last me the next couple years though :)

That's what I'm wondering myself. I don't think so as I would be considering an F80 M3 or F10 M5 (both available in MT although the manual F10's are a bit more rare). The manual sedan options sure are dwindling...Would be nice to stick with the 4 rings however Audi's North American offerings in my particular criteria are next to nothing

I've had my S4 for a year and am always looking for a new car. I too have always owned manuals. I think I've finally narrowed it down to 4 cars. A manual F80 M3, a manual F87 M2 Comp, 8V RS3, Porsche GT4 with some old audi wagon for the winter and to drive on longer commutes. I'm really torn about whether or not I can give up manual. I do know that I want something that is more track oriented than the S4 is. The RS3 fits because of its weight and handling capabilities, but is the only car I'd consider without manual. I genuinely do not care about 1/4 mile times and am more focused on road course than autocross. Therefore the above cars are the only cars that I believe could fit what I am looking for.

Just as a follow up to this...

The wife and I were visiting friends this last weekend and I had the opportunity to ride in and drive their 2018 BMW X5M. The interior/exterior was absolutely fantastic and I loved the way it drove. If the G80 M3 ends up coming with a manual and X Drive options, it would be a tough option to pass up, unless the RS5 sedan truly offers something special.

Having owned a bunch of M3s, driven the F80 M3, owning an S4 and Cayman now, I can tell you that from your list the GT4 will be dynamically on a different planet than all the others. A modified sedan or hatchback chassis, as good as they are, will never have the inherent precision or balance of a bespoke mid-engine chassis. It's just physics. If you truly are't concerned with 1/4 times like you say and enjoy the road courses, even a 981/982 Cayman S or GTS will be a better fit for you than the other cars mentioned. Pick up one of those and get a daily and never take the grin off your face.

I have the S4 and the Cayman now and every so often I think of selling both and getting something in between like a 911 or even an M2 comp but I always think neither will be as practical as the S4 or as agile as the Cayman so I never end up moving ahead with selling them.

I really appreciate all the info! I test drive a 981 S last summer and loved it, but at the time it didn’t make sense. Now my fiancé is getting an SUV so it makes more sense. Mid engine is definitely the way to go and the engine just pulled and pulled and pulled. A 911 would be great, but the prices are just silly for the desirable models. I’ve also thought about just keeping the S4 until it dies and trying to grab a cayman R. Problem is if the 718 GT4 is turbo the R and GT4 won’t depreciate more. If it’s N/A then they will drop and I’ll be set.
