Hello all,

New to the forum, have been shopping for a B8.5 manual tranny for a while and it has been really hard to find the right one. The good ones, as soon as listed are sold right away.

Came across the below S4 and would like to get you all opinion if this is a good buy. This was leased vehicle, with 5k, 15k and the 25k done at the same dealership. The only item of concern is the exterior color, I was looking for a black or a white as my other car is a gray as well. This dealer is out of state and would cost me additional $800 or so to ship it. I have never seen the Daytona gray in person, so little hesitant. Thanks in advance

Cool mate. Looks like an easy decision for you, as it is local. Let us see what other think of the price. Good luck.

Well, I also think it’s a bit high BUT it does have the right options and it is CPO..also has maintence records. If it’s still here on Sunday, I may go check it out and talk numbers, but that doesn’t necessarily mean that I’ll be picking it up. These things come and go quick.

Thanks, so if I consider making an offer, what should I aim for, so that if it don't work out, I can move on.

I had been watching online for a while and the decent ones go around this price. At least listed, not sure how much they end up selling for. Currently there are few listed nationwide, but if the price is around the low 30's for a similar mile/year, there is either some issue, owned in a northern state I prefer not to buy used, multiple owners, no service records, etc.... :(

Since you are not serious I might contact the dealer tomorrow.

Daytona Grey is a nice color.

I'm not sure how much they'll move off that price. It is not a bargain price but probably market price. If you could get it $36K even, that may be the best you can expect. You may be able to find someone locally from the AZ forum that would go take a look at it for you. Research the dealership's reputation online. Ask the salesperson a lot of questions, ask for pictures, and get everything confirmed via email (documented). My S4 purchase was my first negotiated over the phone and email, and my son and I flew 950 miles to buy it sight unseen and drive it back. It was nerve racking and I did a lot of praying but it worked out. Were there a couple of things that weren't up to par? ... Sure, but the dealership worked with me and it is CPO.

If you have it shipped, ask a lot of questions. I would not skimp on the shipper or terms and BTW ... expect delays with a shipper, then you are not disappointed. My understanding is that Reliable Carriers is the gold standard ... and are priced as such. Best wishes.

Hi,

Of course Daytona is a great color, my dilemma is my other car is grey as well :) Love the grey with the red badge and the red tail light combo.

I know it is not a bargain price, I just do not want to overpay and do not mind paying market price. A 2016 with 19k miles was listed close to be for $40k and someone put deposit right away. Local dealer had a 2015 with 32k miles listed for 37k with damage reported in Carfax, I thought it will stay for a while but to my surprise was sold in couple of days.

I will shoot for $35k and would not pay over $36k for sure. Appreciate the advice, will ask for pictures and lot of questions, have to write down and if you remember any critical questions to ask, please pass along. I know people here are very helpful, but might be too much to ask someone to go check locally. Since CPO I am assuming they would have checked everything mechanically and expect normal wear cosmetically. Also appreciate the shipper recommendation. Shipping is not new to me, I bought my current Toyota from Atlanta in 2010 unseen and bought my wife's rx350 from San Diego in 2012 and got them shipped. Both of them were new, so was not worried, but in this case not so. I make sure to get pictures before they put it on the truck and insure it.

Since it is a CPO from the dealer, no point doing a PPI, correct?

Thanks a lot for the detailed response.

I think that price is fair/good especially with the 6mt/diff/BO/ads combo, relatively low mileage CPO etc. depends upon which of those are important to you.

Hi,

The things those are important to me in the order are

MT and Vehicle with good service history, BO not so much but would love to have it, then diff. I love the Daytona grey, but my other car is also grey, but not a show stopper.

Thanks

Looks like it has been sitting in the lot since 8/31, so he came down to $35.5k without much haggling, but agreed and have submitted the finance app. Requested him to take a deposit to hold it, but he is saying not allowed in California. Thanks folks, looks like I could have bargained better if I am in person, but well......

Really? I called earlier to let them know I wanted to check it out tomorrow and they told me that someone placed a deposit down and is flying in today to possibly pick it up... After seeing your post, I figured it wasn’t you, since they said that this person was from NorCal. So that’s odd? This is a nicely spec’d car but I’m not getting overly excited. I’ll seem/be more excited once I know it’s mine.. I know a lot of people look at these and they come and go like hot cakes.

Congrats!!! $35.5K is a fair price. Regardless whether you could have negotiated lower, you should be pleased. As much as I would like to tell you that a dealer CPOing a car makes it rock solid, it does not. Absolutely ask them for an image of the hard copy CPO inspection. Email AoA and ask them for the Monroney (window) sticker and whether it has AudiCare remaining on it.

Regarding some of additional questions to ask (some may seem basic but were important to me):
* I asked for multiple and close up photos of each of the wheels, hood, and front bumper.
* Ask about any engine, tranny sounds (i.e. timing chain rattle, etc.).
* Ask about dents, dings, etc. and for photos of any. Ask them, up front, to take care of any after it is delivered that are present but not divulged to you.
* Ask them for photos of any imperfections in the interior. I did not ask this question and there were two things I discovered, but I had looked nationwide for the Magma interior, so I was not going to walk away.
* Ask whether it has been smoked in and ask the salesperson to have a second person confirm. I am not a smoker and that is a deal breaker for me.
* At the end of the negotiation, ask them matter of factly whether a cargo net is included. If not, that should be a throw in.
*Also, asked about warped rotors. It was evident from the first test drive that they were warped, but my son and I flew there and they knew we weren't going to walk away. I figured I could live with it until I replaced the pads and rotors the first time and properly bedded them.

As the Service Tech told me the first time I took my A4 in for service back in 2010, "Drive it like you robbed a bank! ... at least once every other week. These cars are intended to be driven and need to have the carbon blown out." Enjoy it!

Thank you for the detailed reply and the questions to ask. I already emailed him with some of these questions, but you have stressed on some details and things to ask for, really appreciate it. They have been really busy and the finance department has not processed my financing yet. The vehicle is still listed, I asked the salesperson the reason, he said without the financing is processed, he cannot take it down. Little concerned, will let you all know how it all goes.

The salesperson just called me, looks like someone is at the dealership and are offering the asking price, he asked me if I want to counter. I thought about it for a second and let it go :( I was kind of upset for them to make me fill in the financing application, this is the Audi at Santa Monica. Not that desperate but I am so disappointed and feel bad for wasting all your time.

Gotcha and thanks for the update. I thought I’d at least take pics for you tomorrow, if I wasn’t going to get it myself. Like I said, I’m not trying to get emotionally attchaed to a single vehicle.I’m sure there will be more offered for sale in the near future.

Well it was not meant to be, so looking continues. If any member here, particularly close to Texas, please let me know.

Yes sir, it was little emotional but made up my mind with the same thought, the car was not meant to be with me. May be a better one is waiting for me :) Thanks.

That sucks. Santa Monica Audi seems to be getting all of the rare S4s, but they always charge a few thousand more than their counterparts around SoCal because they know they can. Even San Diego Audi here doesn't really deal with manuals, and when they do it's expensive, sadly. I ended up getting mine in a private party purchase.

The nice thing in your case is that you’re willing to get them shipped. I personally want to find something as close to SoCal as possible, so I currently don’t have many options. May be a little longer wait than I thought. Also, it’s true... they know they can jack up the prices on those vehicles that are in higher demand.
