I am looking into the possibility of towing a small closed trailer with my 2008 A4 Avant. Nothing big, something that can hold a couple good size PA speakers and subwoofers for my weekend live sound/Dj gigs. Is this a possibility with these cars or would I cause more damage than its worth?

These are perfectly capable towing rigs. I mean, I towed an 8’ enclosed U-Haul filled with a motorcycle, all of my personal possessions, and a bunch of car parts 2400km with my Avant any still got decent fuel mileage. I barely even knew there was a trailer behind me.

Remember, in Europe these are the go to instead of pickup trucks. People tow boats, trailers, caravans, etc.

You’ll be fine. Get a hitch and use the b!tch!

That just made my day!!! Do you recommend any hitches in particular? Or if I just go to my local UHaul will that be good?

Glad I could help. I tow with mine regularly and it has 410,000km on it.

I just have a U-Haul hitch. It does the job. If I could find one and had the excess cash, I’d find the European hidden style hitch.

Where would find the European hidden hitch?

I’m assuming, Europe? I’ve only seen one for sale in North America and it was years ago.

Check the Westfalia site. They’re €1,000+. Not really worth the hassle.

I just ordered the Curt #11180 for my ‘07 Avant. It’s taking a long time to be shipped (to Japan) but I’ll update this when it’s all installed!

There are some other Euro-style hitches out there, I'll update if I can find them again. Most are rated for 300lb tongue weight and 3000lbs total weight on the trailer. I am actually planning to add a hitch in the next year or so to pull a small camper and I personally would only install the Euro-style because they're designed to mount the way Audi intended and they look MUCH nicer. Again, personal opinion and I've seen the Curt and U-haul hitches work just fine!

Please keep us updated, I am looking around and not finding the Euro styles without having to spend an arm and a leg. I'll spend a little bit extra but not 3 or 4 times as much as the uhaul.

From what I recall (I was researching in Jan/Feb) the prices were in the $6-800 range, you may be able to luck out and find a used model for less but that seems to be the going rate. Again, IMHO, the cost is worth it. Westfalia is the OEM manufacturer and you can't beat plug'n'play. Even VAGCOM can recode for trailer functionality.

EDIT: I browsed this site in addition to the Westfalia site. These folks offer free US shipping so that's a plus given the weight of these things!

They say to 2007, will they work on an 08?

They should, model runs ended at different times for European production so that's not uncommon to see dates that don't exactly line up. The chassis code (B7/8E) are what's most important.
