Hello Everyone,
Just wondering if anyone had luck with hot dipping to remove rust like in the picture link attached?
Thanks in advance

I wish I could see your pics, Iíve got an engine Iím replacing and the water passages had gotten quite rusty looking... Iíd love a comparison to see what youíre dealing with.

Hmm, thatís in different places than mine. And Iíve not taken my head off either, so I have no idea what the cylinder looks like. Though it did look like your water jackets were pretty badly rusted.

Was that sitting outside in the rain or something?

FWIW, Iím skeptical that just a dip would take care of that... but mine is a pretty unqualified opinion...

It could have been sitting for a while but I am assuming different coolant mixes and not the right ratios. Didnt know how far a dip would take it.
Thanks

Any competent machine shop should be able top take care of that. Surface machining will take care of head gasket area and hone should take care of cylinder walls if hot tanking does not clean it up. Journals are a different story. But that is why they have oversized bearings, upon other reasons. Your coolant passages look like complete sh*t, though. And I would be more concerned about clogged oil gallies.

Have a machine shop look it over, and go from there. Try one that is used to working on VAG motors (the 1.8T is a very common block).

If you're going to be disassembling it, it would be a smart thing to measure clearances on all journals, and cylinders. Not just clean it.

So I found a machine shop by me that has done a bunch of 1.8t's in the past and he said that he could clean that all up for $120. He is also going to check all tolerances and if we need to bore it so be it. At that point I would do a 2008. We shall see how this goes but I am excited to bring her back to life. Thanks for the feedback.

Personally wouldn't be shopping in the budget catagory with engine machine work.

I went .020 over and paid a shop respectively for all the work they put in...only after bringing it to a shop who did a $120 job, and literally didnt do anything....

Do it right or do it twice...Just food for thought.

Nothing worse than doing it twice. I would never go cheap on the foundation of a planned BT setup. I do miss the old 2001.5 Lazer Red S4 Avant, she was a beast.....
Thanks everyone

She's cleaned up nice, alot better than before....not 100% but I can work with this. Now time to get her back on the road. I went with JE pistons and IE rods. Stock Crank and currently cleaning up the head. Any one on here deal with this scale?9190591906
