View Full Version : Whining noise between 55-63 MPH only under throttle

Hello,
I noticed a whining noise, only under throttle between 55-63 ish. No throttle no noise. Naturally I thought pinion bearing, I swapped out my sport diff refilled with fluid and then drove again. Still have the noise just changed slightly. (The sound is behind the rear seats)
I have not ran it on a lift but this noise is so subtle, and with only throttle application I’d imagine I’d be hard pressed to locate it. However I do have that in my scopes soon.
Has anyone run into a bad CV joint on the front or rear of the prop shaft or a center bearing that is going bad that may cause this?
I know a few folks have had the dealer go crazy over swapping parts, up to the point of a new transmission as I recall. I just don’t think the noise could transfer that far, granted not impossible.
Thanks for the insight!

What mods does the car have? Rear diff inserts?

I did but removed them for same noise, however since then the noise slowly returned albeit different speeds. The only one left in the car is the trans mount, which now that I think of it maybe could be causing some driveline noise.
Already verified torqued to 35 ft lbs as well as per other advice (for rear diff mounts)
Otherwise, it’s a dual pulley car with supporting mods. GIAC, Miltek full exhaust intake.

Wife or GF in car?? Had to say it.
Maybe wheel bearing?

My only insight is that IIRC some people said they could still hear the noise after removing them, albeit better. It could just be amplified by the solid mount.

I’ll have to remove the trans mount and report back.
Wheel bearing wouldn’t react the way it does with throttle, and fortunately my wife is very quiet lol.
On another note, is it only the Audi factory scan tool that can code the differential to the car? My Vag wouldn’t do it, but before I take the plunge of dealing with the local dealer figure I’d ask.

Can confirm removed 034 trans mount noise still persists.
I can get it to happen at lower speeds at the same rpm, only under load @ 18-1900.
It is coming from the rear seat area, I’m pretty reluctant to think it’s anything forward of the driveshaft center bearing.
Has anyone ever ran into a CV joint noise in relation to the driveshaft/load?
This is peculiar for sure.

Did you ever figure this out?
I am having the opposite issue. When under throttle I get no sound but when I let off it starts. As soon as I touch the throttle it goes away. Loudest 50mph and above and its coming from the rear of the car.

I get a whining noise above 85MPH, but only when my wife is with me. Very strange.

LOL, funny I get an odd noise but only under hard acceleration from a stop. It usually includes a sharp pain in my right shoulder and the words are you trying to make me throw up! LOL
Seriously though I am putting the car on the lift tomorrow AM to rotate the tires and check things out. On a RWD car I would associate this to a driveshaft, U joint or pinion. Hope its neither but something is causing it. Perhaps something is lose back there and shifting when there is no load from the drivetrain.

Sounds like NVH from the diff inserts.

I do have the ECS mounts but it seems to have gotten louder recently. The inserts have been in for several years.

Late to the topic, but I had a similar noise, and at the time it was under warranty. They replaced the drive shaft u joint, both axles, and ended up replacing the wheel bearing as a last ditch effort.
The tech doing the work, & myself, swore there was no way that sound could be a wheel bearing, but their master tech got the green light from AoA to do it a that was the problem.
Been smooth & noise free for about 5k miles so far.

Was your noise present all the time or only off throttle?

Never fully figured this out, I swapped the diff out with no change and started to think it was exhaust for whatever reason. Cats shelled out and I’ve changed my setup drastically... since that it’s gone but it may just be because the exhaust is louder lol
