long story short: i went to the dragway a couple of weeks ago. i did about 6 runs, half of which were done with the upswing method and half were 3500-45000 dumps (i'm 6MT)
it was pretty damn hot, and in retrospect i sholdnt have bothered running, but i wanted to see what car would do "in any weather, no prep, no weight reduction, etc" and in 100% street form. I did 3 hot laps, waited 30-45 minutes and did another 3 laps and gave up
the next day i noticed a whining/"rubbing" sound, almost like my tire was rubbing on the fender liner. i have a pretty aggresive stance so i jacked up the car, checked the wheel wells (front and back) and pulled my 5mm spacers from the rear wheels.
the noise continued to happen. it only happens in first gear, and is arguably more prominent when i let off the throttle and cruise in 1st gear. if i shift to 2nd (or any other gear) or neutral, it goes away. again, it is a whine/rubbing noise that is cycical - very similar to a rubbing tire. thats the best i can describe it
i went to my local shop and they pointed the finger at the transmission given the symptons. they pointed me in the direction of a long standing transmission shop about an hour away with an excellent reputation, and after speaking with the owner, i could tell he was smart and knew his stuff.
they finally pulled the transmission and opened it up and found NOTHING. he did indeed drive the car and noticed the same noise i did. he even took a microscope to the gear and found nothing but a minor blemish which is alluded to being insignificant. when i saw "nothing" i mean there was no glaring issue, and nothing significant found even after it being put under a microscope
has anybody run into this, heard of it, or have any insight on what it might be? the diagnosis process is not over, i trust the transmission guy and his knowledge, but just trying to get platform specific advice and some outside perspective.

Curious to see what the problem might be, good luck!!

Have you checked your suspension components, including boots, etc.? Did you check the tires for a foreign object embedded. Could it be a wheel bearing beginning to go (probably not that but figured I throw it out there)?

i did basic check of the suspension and check the tires too because i thought something was rubbing the fender liner. i had a wheel bearing go in the my last car and the symptoms are the same
the key here is that the sound only happens in first gear, and is "cyclical." the noise remains when i put the clutch in, but is gone as soon as i shift to second or put it in neutral. its also more significant when i let off the gas and i'm coasting in first...
its not speed related really either because the sound goes away in second, even at the same speed it's present in first
so, in summary, i don't think it is any of the items you suggested because of all of that. thanks for the reply though

Just tossing this out there. It might be exhaust nvh? I have a similar type of noise which is extremely hard to describe, but your description is close to it. Happens to me mostly in deceleration and is prominent in the 2,200-2,300rpm range whether I'm accelerating or decelerating. It happens when I hold revs there as well. I ended up doing the Mopar exhaust dampers and 80% of it is gone. If you're around in the next couple days and want to see if that is the similar sound, text me.

i have the exhaust dampeners, but did change out the ECS xpipe and put back the rest of my touring section back in. my current means of transportation is a Trek bike so i can't go too far, but let me know if youre in portsmouth anytime soon
someone else i talked to suggested NVH as well, so maybe thats something i need to pursue further

Did the mechanic say anything about the condition of your clutch or flywheel? And are they stock or upgraded? I feel like if it's an issue with your tranny/clutch you would not just hear the problem but feel it as well.

He said that overall the transmission was “better than he expected.” I have a south bend stage 3 endurance clutch with less than 10k on it so it should be fine

I'm no expert but I'd say it's def something with the clutch, being that first gear/ reverse are the same gear. It does it only going forward . It could be just engagement issues. Did you try a transmission flush ? Does the clutch still holding up or does it slip at all?

No transmission flush. My shop suggested I go right to the transmission place, and feel that he would have checked out the clutch and let me know if that was the issue, but then again, if It was the clutch, wouldn’t I have issues in others gears too?
The clutch does not slip from what I can tell. I haven’t driven it too hard/much since it started happening

Did they also check the ring gear and bindix?

not sure what a bindix is, but they've looked over everthing thoroughly. as of now, they're ordering some new parts and replacement gear/components and will most likely further inspect the bad part once it has been replaced. the best thing they/we can come up with is that it somewhat warped, or off every so slightly that its not easily recognized without something to compare it to

Please let me know how you make out, I too went to the strip last night and did 3 runs. After my 3rd run I got home and noticed only when in first gear I’m cruising under 10mph and let go of the gas it makes a whining sound. Only does it in first and only when off the gas car is cruising to a stop. I drove 500 aggressive miles after the strip and cars feels fine just makes that noise in 1st gear.

Update for the masses and for anyone else that runs into this issue.
After 5 weeks, I finally have my car back. First gear and a few other bearings were replaced and now the noise is gone. The shop that did the work still doesn’t know what caused it, and I’m in possession of the stock parts and there is nothing blatantly noticeable. The money has been spent, but I’m still curious if anyone has some insight as to why this happened so I can avoid it in the future
