Last year, I started getting the itch of wanting something fast. I was driving a B6 S4, which while no slouch, was feeling a little long in the tooth. I started the search for what would be my new project. I knew I wanted a manual, preferably AWD, and easily tunable. I also wanted something that could blend in - I did not want something flashy like an STI or a Corvette. Having owned several Audis before, I was used to the little quirks, and knew what to expect. I was very drawn to the Mk2 TT-RS, but decided against it after taking a test drive. I would have jumped on a current RS3 or TT-RS, had Audi not axed manual transmissions. The B8 platform was the logical choice, and before even pulling the trigger on the car, I had a game-plan formulated for most of the mods I was going to do. In March of this year, I found exactly what I was looking for - a M/T 2015 Audi S4 with just about the only option being a sports diff.

Before doing any mods, I went out and got a baseline for my car. With nothing removed, and a full tank, the brute came in at 3953 pounds. An SAE-corrected dyno run for a completely stock B8.5 S4, 300 lb/ft and 296 HP:

https://i.imgur.com/xiXR6XMm.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/xiXR6XM.jpg)https://i.imgur.com/4dEj0j5m.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/4dEj0j5.jpg)

More than just fast, I wanted my car to be light. What better way to continue making the car fast after the power-adders have run out? For just about every mod I've done, I've taken into consideration how much weight could be saved. While there is no ultimate mod for weight reduction, every little bit counts.

Most importantly, I needed this car to be daily drivable. That means no ditching the spare, no ripping out the rear seats. No 6-puck clutch that will wear out after a few days of stop-n-go traffic. This, however, did lead to some of my more unique modifications, like stealing the aluminum spare out of a Nissan and re-drilling it to 5x112.

Below is a list of all the mods I've done, ordered roughly by time of completion:

That's 308lbs of weight reduction during daily driving! With 2 minutes of prep and no tools, I can still do the traditional rear seat bench, spare tire and tools for 47lbs (pics) (https://imgur.com/vOBppcO). Combine that with a quarter tank of gas, and I can drop an additional 120lbs before going to the drag strip. That would put me close to 3525lbs, which is enough to make even westwest888 jealous!

Update 10/10/2018: After breaking in my clutch and installing the carbon fiber hood, I decided it was a good time to do another dyno & weigh-in (full album here (https://imgur.com/a/VndLvVB)):

Are you planning on taking the car to the track? if not, I don't really see the point. Yes, I understand the benefits of a lighter car, but for on the street useage, it seems a little extreme. I do salute your efforts to accomplish your objective.

Did you have to make custom brackets for the battery? The spec on the battery looks very promising.

My key takeaways are that there is some fairly easy lbs to loose in the brakes, headers, and battery. I’ll be curious to see how well the battery works out. Well done writeup.

Great info! Lighter weight wheels and rotors are next on my list. That lithium battery is a bit too pricey for most though! Question? How much does the rear seat bench weigh? Hardly ever have anyone in the back seat. Also, is there an aluminum 18" spare wheel that would work on our cars?

Actually, no! The battery fits perfectly under the spare wheel bracket. My install is detailed in the pictures link above - if you're on mobile, you should still be able to see the pictures if you "request desktop site".

Really interesting thread. I'm moving a similar direction with my slow and steady mods, so this has piles of interesting information. I do have questions about the exhaust setup for daily driving, as that's something I'm trying to figure out. What sort of noise are you producing with the headers + JHM Catted X-pipe + Resonated exhaust?

I'm trying to figure this out, plus I have to pass emissions testing in Texas. Also, I know it's pretty bad lbs/$$$, and it's at the back of the car down low, but did you put any thought into the Remus Titanium mufflers? I'd assume they are quite a bit lighter than stock.

I'm also curious why you went with 275/30 tires. Seems like you could have saved a few oz on rubber without stretching! Anyway, great information! Thanks!

It is quite a bit louder than stock, but I'm not sure how it compares to other setups. There's a small amount of drone from ~1400 all the way up to 2800 RPMs. It is livable, but I'm looking in to adding some Vibrant resonators after the cats. Here's how it sounds:

Luckily in Washington state, there's no visual for emissions, just a readiness check. Also, it's rumored that we won't have emissions at all soon. With the APR test pipe file, there's no CEL.

I had considered Titanium, but I hadn't considered the Remus ones. At about $4000, I'm not sure I could justify spending that to save an unknown amount of weight, and make the car louder than it already is. I had considered a custom exhaust, and I'm still toying with the idea of doing a y-pipe right after the cats to run a single exhaust the rest of the way back. With a large enough diameter it shouldn't disrupt flow. I haven't verified, but I think we can use the A4 single-exhaust valence to make it look natural with only a single outlet. Kind of a crazy idea, but I think it could end up shaving more weight off for less money than titanium.

The options as I saw it were 255/35(24lbs (https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Sport+4S&partnum=535YR9PS4SXLV2)), 265/35(27lbs (https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Sport+4S&partnum=635YR9PS4SXLV2)), or 275/30(25lbs (https://www.tirerack.com/tires/tires.jsp?tireMake=Michelin&tireModel=Pilot+Sport+4S&partnum=73YR9PS4SXLV2)). Going to 20mm wider tires with only a pound difference seemed like a decent tradeoff to me.

Just installed the APR Carbon Fiber Intake (https://www.goapr.com/products/intake_b8_30t.html) which netted -1.4lbs (https://imgur.com/a/52IS2nc). I debated on whether or not to include the intake pipe as part of the calculation here. I decided against it, as this intake can be used with the stock throttle body/intake pipe, and it ends up re-using the intake pipe included with the Ultracharger. Whenever I get around to weighing the Ultracharger kit & stock throttle body, I'll include the intake pipe there. (Does anyone happen to have the Ultracharger kit but not yet installed so it can easily be weighed? I don't want to take mine off the car and break the seals to the supercharger)

The filter on the APR intake is MASSIVE. It is so much bigger than either the Roc Euro or CTS Turbo intakes.

I had tested out both the Roc Euro intake as well as the CTS Turbo. The CTS Turbo unfortunately did not work with the APR Ultracharger. Also, the heat shield doesn't seem to do as good of a job as the Roc Euro or APR at creating an air barrier, it leaves some pretty large gaps. The Roc Euro does work with the Ultracharger (if you buy their special intake pipe), but weighs more than stock & the APR kit.

I’ve been working on this for a while. I tried to get the fsdirect guy on eBay to do them but his answer was 60k? I said for what? Some Russian AutoCAD designers........I have a template and we are testing on a 3D printer in a couple of weeks for fitment. I’m not familiar with the mold process but I’ll figure it out. I am trying to make plastic fog deletes that cover the hole, screw in, hold the harness cable and have a delete plug in for the light code.......I never realized how much time this takes. I’ve been doing it for like a year in a previous thread.

I did end up ordering a Seibon. The OSIR is only for B8s, not B8.5s. I did see Carbon Creations had a hood (Carbon Creations 114029), but I am not a fan of those hood vents. I'm just praying that the fitment on the Seibon isn't terrible.

Compared to stock at least, it is crazy responsive in braking, acceleration and steering. I don't know how much I can attribute to the weight reduction, and how much to my performance mods, as I haven't driven anyone else's stage2 car.

I should of weighted my ECS intake before installing it.

The filter is huge and the heat shield is steel, so I think it's pretty heavy compared to the APR one.

Got the Seibon hood on for a test fit. This is without even fine tuning the placement, I just bolted it down. I'm surprised how well it fits!

It isn't quite OEM-level, but it's close. If you look closely, you can see it isn't perfectly even left to right. It's pretty flush with the fender on the passenger side, but sits just slightly lower than flush on the driver side. The stock hood has adjustable bumpers/spacers to even that kind of thing out - maybe I'll have to get some rubber bumpers to prop one side up.

I also got a couple quotes back for painting the hood. Seems like it'll be about $400-$500 no matter where I go. It should be painted and ready to install by this time next week!

Got the hood back from the body shop and I have the final weights - 23.6lbs dropped by going with the Seibon hood (pics (https://imgur.com/a/uFPdjcr))

Overall, I'm very happy with the fitment. I've asked a couple people, and no one can even tell the hood isn't OEM.

Also, I got around to weighing a few other things I've removed from the car (engine covers, manual, cargo net and trunk liner), which is another 6.8lb reduction.

As of now, I should be close to about 300lbs removed in a daily-driving setup. Because I don't have weights for the APR CPS or Ultracharger yet, I might actually be just slightly under 300.

My next goal is going to be getting under 3600lbs, so I need to find an additional ~50lbs of weight loss. Some ideas I have:

Custom seat brackets. The brackets that Corbeau makes for the B8 chassis weigh 11lbs each. If it were made from angle iron, it could be a thinner gauge while retaining strength. Or even just holes/slots drilled in the existing bracket.
Fog light delete. Both fog lights together weigh ~1.6lbs. The fog light grilles weigh ~1.5lbs combined. With an RS-style fog light grille and fog light delete, this could save 1.5-2 lbs.
Carbon fiber/aluminum driveshaft. I started talking to The Driveshaft Shop about making a carbon fiber driveshaft. Just from the initial talks, it sounds like they'll need to create a custom broach to make the engine-side spline. This could take 4-6 months just to get the tooling in place, plus whatever time they'd need to test and design it. I also reached out to a couple local places, and Drivelines NW said they could do an aluminum single-piece shaft.
Carbon fiber trunk lid & fenders. Kuhl Rennsport said they can do custom carbon fiber body parts. This will likely be pretty expensive, considering the prices they have listed for trim & engine covers. I also don't know how much the stock fenders or trunk weigh. Given that the Seibon hood cut the weight in half, we could use that as an estimation of how much could be saved once we know the stock weights.
Lightweight pulleys. ECS sells lightweight pulleys for alternators (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-parts/lightweight-alternator-pulley-black/001551ecs02a-01/), power steering (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-ecs-parts/lightweight-power-steering-pulley-black/002744ecs01a/) and water pump (https://www.ecstuning.com/b-hamburg-tech-parts/aluminum-water-pump-pulley/94810609001~ham/), albeit not for the 3.0t. Maybe some custom pulleys could be made for our car...

Got the stock hood off for a test fit. 49.9lbs. Still have to transfer the latching mechanism, so 49.9 - 24.4 isn't the final weight.

Is your car monsoon grey? I wanted a CF hood but not sure what the color would look so thanks for the pics. And after the OEM latch replacement on the CF hood are you planning to use any other latching options to fully secure the hood? Fast cars and CF hoods always scare the beejesus out of me.. Would hate for one to pop up @100+ mph

Luckily in Washington state, there's no visual for emissions, just a readiness check. Also, it's rumored that we won't have emissions at all soon. With the APR test pipe file, there's no CEL.
That's what i heard too, lucky dog. I wish the knuckle heads here in CA would learn from FL or you guys. Nice write up.

Daytona gray. If I can find another way of securing it (maybe even temporarily, just for use at the track) that doesn't look as bad as hood pins, I definitely will. Until then, just the stock latch for me...

Great write up, keep up the good work. I had Seibon CF hood and hatch on my integra back in the day. For that model, Seibon had their own molded latch for the hood—which was pretty much just a "U" shaped latch. I definitely didn't trust it and ran hood pins as insurance. The reuse of the OEM latch should be a lot better, but it would always be on the back of my mind.

They sale these:

Though the above is expensive I’m sure cheaper ones exist.

They sit flush without the pin exposed

How much money did you spend making the car 300 lbs lighter?

Why the sarcasm in your question?

I think most of the modifications serve a dual purpose by also increasing the performance of the vehicle (hearders, exhaust, brakes, etc)

Him choosing to go a unique route with the car is bringing a lot of attention to the thread and it's probably because many of us have wondered these questions: How light is this compared to this? How much weight can we save by removing this? etc

Great job with the thread - I'm enjoying seeing your progress. Lets get 3400lbs please.

OP, great work! Now to be funny, did you consider to lose weight as well? Might be able to shave 20lbs from yourself ;)

I look forward to your finale.

There isn't much left to be done on my car, at least nothing that can be done anytime soon. Now that my clutch is broken in and my hood is installed, I figured it was a good time to visit the dyno again and get another weigh-in (full album here (https://imgur.com/a/VndLvVB)).

https://i.imgur.com/ICU8dvIl.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/ICU8dvI.jpg)

This is the same dyno I used for my baseline. Best dyno of the day came out to 441whp and 406ft/lb, which is a gain of 145whp and 106ft/lbs! Keep in mind, this is on APR's 91 octane file, not 93.

On my way home from the dyno, I topped off of my gas tank and stopped by Achtuning for a weigh-in:

https://i.imgur.com/AP17jTml.jpg (https://i.imgur.com/AP17jTm.jpg)

Again, these are the same scales I used for my baseline. My car now sits at 3647lbs in daily-driving form (complete with spare tire and tools!). I was actually surprised by this - I still haven't weighed the APR CPS, I figured that would have added ~15lbs to my estimates in my first post.

I downloaded WinPEP and overlaid my best stock dyno run over my best run today. There is a huge "area under the curve" improvement:

I also did some VCDS logging during the dyno:

Also, an update regarding the driveshaft. After a long back-and-forth with The Driveshaft Shop, they want nothing to do with creating a carbon fiber driveshaft for our chassis. Apparently our slip-yoke is too much of a PITA to deal with that they refuse to even attempt it. I actually ended up taking my driveshaft off and brought it to DrivelinesNW, and they said almost the exact same thing.

For anyone that's interested, our driveshaft weighs 20.2lbs. Here (https://imgur.com/a/A4Xa0px) are some pictures that may help someone in the future, if you decide to pursue this yourself.

Any plans to run fuel that doesn't suck? (Ethanol blend, meth, race fuel?)

I'm surprised you made that much power with the crazy amounts of timing being pulled.

For real, switching to the 93 tune and running like 3 gals of E85 in the tank would make it a whole new car. You can reach out to the 2zero6 guys for where E85 is sold up there.

---------------------

Will you be down south any time soon?

I'd be curious to see how big of a difference the weight savings make roll racing.

I'll be up near Seattle for the NW Toy Run in December, I don't have anything planned to go north other than that right now.

The lack of program switching is what's stopping me from doing that right now. There's only a handful of E85 stations in the entire state, and 0 between my house and work. Because this is a daily driver, I do not want to deal with driving out of my way every time I need to fill up, or keeping some race gas in my garage to mix with. If we could do program switching like I can in my C5 allroad, I would be all over it.

For me to switch tunes just for the track is also a PITA - I'd have to fill up with race gas & stop by my local APR dealer on a Friday, drive for an hour each way on a Saturday/Sunday to the track, then stop by the APR dealer again on Monday. Maybe I'll go through the rigmarole next year just for bragging rights, but it's not something I'll be able to do often.

No plans for the rest of the year to go down to Portland, but I'll definitely be coming down a few times next year.

I'm hoping to go to the last Test-N-Tune at Pacific Raceways on the 20th (http://pacificraceways.com/events/test-n-tune-gambler-5/).

The NW Toy Run looks intriguing, I may have to look in to that...

I'm surprised Pacific is open this late in the season! If the weather is nice I'll try to make it up there. I have plans that night but could hang out until 3 or 4.

There is only 1 spot in Portland to pick up E85 and it is out of my way. I fill up 4 5 gal cans when I go usually and that will last about a month.

The difference with and without E85 is enough to keep me playing these silly games...

Thank you for using a scale! I have 4, and they get used. Not sure what units “really light” or any of the other internet terms are. My stock hood weight did come in at 31 pounds on a bicycle scale leaving me scratching my head a bit.

I don’t recall the last time I read a forum. I had to register and reply.

Mine is a 2011 and went from 3940 to 3555:
Wheels 42
Floor mats 4
Rear Seat 82.5
Spare and tools 43.5
battery 48
seats 64
hood 23
Rear door panels15
Sliders 10
Sun Roof 30
Total 362

My CATs are trashed. I’m jealous. Yes, a couple years of flogging her with all the APR stuff. 15 days or so at Pacific and The Ridge road courses.[drive]

I plan to be there as well. Still on the 034 93 tune running about 3 gallon E85 mix. I hope both you and the OP show up. Weather is showing sun as of today, but we all know how quickly that can change in the PNW

I’m curious how you’re finding that clutch performs at the strip and trying to get off the line?

1.8xx sixty foots are all I’ve been able to muster out of mine without completely roasting it.

That 1.889 60' was my best of the day, the others were all ~1.9-2.0. The LWFW and Sachs clutch definitely changed how it launches - revving to 3.5k RPMs doesn't seem to be enough, as it bogs down hard. I was nervous about going too hard my first time at the strip, so I didn't attempt any higher RPM launches.

Just wanted to say nice build!! I’m down under 3450 starting at almost exactly the same weight but mine is definitely not street-friendly! That’s fantastic weight loss in street trim!

The RSS+ is such a great setup for weight. I had PSS10s before them and shaved 20 lbs over them.

Love the superb documentation! Will be following!

OP, do you have any idea how much additional headroom you gained by switching to Corbeau seats & brackets? I'm 6'1" but like 97.5% torso so me with a helmet on means I spend my whole session slouched in my seat with my helmet in the sunroof hole.

It feels about the same as the stock seat at the lowest setting. The CR1 happens to be one of their tallest seats - there are shorter ones, as well as you have the option to have the base shaved if you need more headroom.

Sweet thread. Sucks about the driveshaft. Keep it up!
