View Full Version : Hawk Street/Race Pads Review (Street & Track!)

A little background on the product based on my brief search… this pad is a re-named DTC-30 with beveled edges to reduce noise on street. Operating temperature is 100-1200F.

On street:
The install went smooth and after the initial bed-in, the pads did not make any noise. Please note these don’t really bite in the mornings until the temperature reaches operating temperature. Dust level is really bad. 2-3 days of normal driving will cover your wheels. Lucky I’m running grey wheels, so the dust isn’t really noticeable. Everything else was fine other than cold morning bite and the dust level. Once is it’s up the temperature, they bite very well. These really feel aggressive as well. Slotted rotors make humming noise while braking, and with these pads I notice louder noise and stops much sooner. I am very happy with them!

On track:
Current setup:
Front: Hawk Street/Race
Rear: Stoptech Street Performance
Rotors: Stoptech Slotted F/R
Fluid: ATE200
Tires: OEM Pirelli P Zero 255 35 19
Optional: Macan air dams /

I went out to Summit Point main circuit to test these out after using Stoptech street performance for the last 4 track days. Stoptechs weren’t bad for my level, but I wanted to try something with harder bite. Once these were up in operating temperatures, these worked flawlessly. I know a lot of HP Plus reviews were a bit neutral because of very high initial bite that you can’t modulate brake much and start to fade at the end of each session. These are different. I can trail brake, late brake, was easy to control.

I’m not sure because I installed the Macan heatshield & air dams, I didn’t notice any boiling. Pedal felt firm throughout each session. It appears those plastics are doing what it’s supposed to do! Starting in second session, I started to experience vibration under braking. It was so abrupt that entire front end was shaking. I’m pretty sure the rotors aren’t warped because on the way home I didn’t feel anything. It could’ve been from uneven brake material, I’m not sure. I didn’t feel any pulsation from brake. Maybe it’s due to slotted rotors? Going try blanks next time. Also to note, the wear was very good. I only used about 2-3mm and no sign of cracks or melting. I’d say these held up very well despite this pig car.

Now back on street with these pads… LOUD metal screeching noise during slow stop under 15mph. I couldn’t stand it, so I swapped them back with stoptech pads… It was a lot to read but to put this short: For intermediate solo drivers, I think this pad suits well. Price was 70-100 cheaper than other brands. At my level, I’m going to keep these as track pads for now.

Nice review. In the advanced/A group I melted EBC Yellows on Summit Main in one day. They were brand new. Almost to the backing plates when I took them off.

I ended up going to a dedicated track pad and upgrading the whole front while I was at it to Macan. The little plastic air dams are great, but they just send air at the brake rotor rock shield so they don't actually accomplish much. When I did my upgrade I purchased Macan heat shields for around 20 bucks for the pair and they bolted right up. Basically they just protect the ABS sensor and tie rod end and that's it. Lots more fresh air for brake cooling.

I've used the big brother of those, the DTC-60 and 70. Careful that you clean your wheels. The dust from those pads will eat the finish. Yeah, I did the same. Macan heat shield + air ducts, definitely helps with cooling. Exposes inner rotors for the airway.

Yikes, running yellow stuff for advanced group? I'd consider lucky the brake didn't fail. Thanks for the note on the abrasive dust. I've been neglect on the car lately, need to wash it down soon.

I had yellowstuff on for my track day at canaan... disappointed all around. I glazed pads and boiled fluid after 2 sessions. Lost all confidence in my brakes...

It’s a great design from Porsche parts. Mine seems to work well. Next step is to feed airflow from bumper to wheel well.

There's few posts in Track Driver thread regarding using fog light to feed air into the wheel well. Some drill a lot of small holes or like this guy (https://www.audizine.com/forum/showthread.php/715169-Audi-S4-B8-Custom-Honeycomb-Foglight-Grill). I'm not sure when I'll do that, but if I keep this car until next year then I'll probably do it before next spring.
