View Full Version : Getting a ported blower...anything extra I should do while the blower is off?

Hi all. I have a 2015 S4 6MT which is currently GIAC dual pulley with an AWE 57.55mm S/C pulley and 183mm Fluidampr crank pulley. I also have a divorced loop AWE Coldfront heat exchanger and coolant reservoir (but not the separate coolant pump). I recently contacted Evan at Tampa Autosports to get a ported blower. I paid him the additional core deposit so I still have the stock blower on my car and am driving it in the meantime. I will be pulling the stock blower myself but having my local shop re-install the new one to ensure I don't mess anything up.

My question is: should I have anything else done while the blower is off, preventative or otherwise? I have a buddy also doing the ported blower and he is having the shop do a new thermostat and PCV. I recently installed a boost tap and while the S/C elbow was off, I noticed some (not tons, but a little) black residue inside. I know a full carbon cleaning is common for our engines but I really don't want to take on a ton more labor hours and am trying to keep the out-the-door cost at a reasonable level. For reference the car has 39k miles (30k since stage 1 tune, 20k since stage 2, and about 3k since dual pulley).

Any tips, suggestions, or evidence would be extremely appreciated. Thank you!

Taylor

Thermostat, PCV, water pump, and of course carbon clean all require the blower to be removed. For carbon cleaning, you can wait until the blower is off to really inspect and make a decision. If it doesn't look bad you probably don't need a PCV either. If it needs cleaning I'd do the PCV.
Thermostats, it seems like if they fail it's around 70-80K miles. So kinda up to you if you wanna wait and pull the blower again later or do it now but I don't think you'd need to be worried about it failing any time soon.
Same deal with the water pump. I think the newer ones have a metal housing? So doing it now would give you the peace of mind of having the upgraded part, but again I wouldn't expect it to fail soon.

I'm at 50K miles now and I plan on doing stage 2 in a year or so, and the blower another year or two after. So I'll be around 80K at that point..and I'll probably do all of these things then.

ixez, the boost tap adds a port to attach a vacuum hose to to get a true measured pressure reading, instead of just what the ECU is requesting (not measuring).
