View Full Version : Stock Fog Light Grille mod

Sorry if this has been done before, but I haven't seen it in the year I've been around these parts.

I was disappointed with the unreasonably hot life my Roc Euro was living, despite the heat shield. I decided to drill holes in the stock cover to allow more air flow. My trim was cracked anyway, so WTH. Background Test: I decided to drive around with the entire fog grille removed, and it drastically reduced the temperature of the intake compartment. Car felt happier, sound was a little louder, temps are cooler, and I'm pretty happy. I ended up taping all of the gaps I could from the heat-shield to the rest of the engine compartment too. am considering a unilateral hood-vent to create some sort of vacuum. Other considerations are a mesh to prevent an insane amount of particulate into the compartment, but we'll see how dirty this gets.

Things I did:
1) 1/4 drill bit angled at the 45 degree angle of the honeycomb; did one hole on each side of the hexagon
2) Only needed to drill up to the column just past the noted tab, cuz the rest just goes to the fog housing
3) used random tools and a nail to get the plastic bits out as much as I could
4) stopped when I had a reasonable amount of carpal tunnel.

Overall, I think this is a good 30 minute project if you want the stock look. Would consider some of the RS covers out there, but may even prefer this look.

P.S. I'll head over to a shop or something to verify temps. I don't even think I have a thermo for when you're sick! Honestly tho, you can feel the difference just by putting your hand in there.

I like this option - functional but looks better IMO than the wide-open mesh of an RS style grille. I might just have to copy this.

I actually replicated that as well a while back. I didn't see a great difference in non-scientifically measured temperature. Mine wasn't the most sealed tho. I still have it in there, so maybe it's doing something.

Nice work! I'm curious to see the IAT difference.

Totally irrelevant to the fog light grille mod, but lets bring this one back just for fun, and for those of you looking for more cooling, enjoy....

It's pretty funny you posted this because when I saw the OP's username, the first thing I thought of was Skywagon and his S4 hood mutilation and 4-ring emblem misplacement escapades.

It went for 440 posts first time out, it is just to good a read to let die in the archives.

I thought the initial verdict on this setup was it didn't work with the open air intakes (CTS, RocEuro, etc), it was only useful if you have the stock airbox.

Also, @SkyparkPT, did you run any ducting from the backside of the drilled out fog grille up to the intake area?

I like the idea that @B18b1ex posted for using a grille with the adaptive cruise control, but I thought that was on the driver's side, not passenger's? Where'd you find that, or did you make that yourself?

I think the adaptive cruise sensor is on the driver-side of the car, I also don’t think it was an option in North America, initially found the grill online which I think was a Chinese knock off but it was cheap and looked good. I then had a minor accident which damaged the bumper and grill, I was able to get the insurance to replace it with oem version which was expensive for a piece of plastic.
So, If you can find it it’s cheaper if not I think you can order from ECS or the dealer.

For me it was the cleanest look, I have not tested but it must be better than not having it. I just need to make a better tube.

Edit: I found the ecs link, I searched the part number for a while and when I found it at a reasonable price I bought it. I wouldn’t pay the ecs price, but that’s just me.

Has anyone done this and seen any reduction in IATs? Was considering dremeling out a small section and running a duct up toward the intake to force more fresh air through to the filter.
