View Full Version : Anyone want to take a stab at this knocking noise? What in the world is this?
This noise started in the last week or two, maintains the same frequency when it commences. Starts after rolling up to 5mph and continues after. Sounds like it’s coming from engine compartment. Stops when you slow the car to less than a few MPH and/or stopping car completely. Noise is not associated with engine speed, wheel speed, or a given gear. Not associated with turning steering wheel. Seems to go away after car has been warmed up and driven for a bit.
Recent work done (several weeks ago) - rear brakes and rotors, lowering springs install and spacers.

So it's a constant knocking that doesn't change it's speed regardless of engine or car speed? And it happens at any speed >5 MPH?

Yes. It seems to go away after the car has warmed up for a bit. However, in general, it’s becoming more noticeable in recent days. Hopefully you are you able to hear it in the video?

Maybe a loose x-frame bolt -- I saw a post by Humblemechanic last week on instagram where he noted a similar issue.

*correction, it was the swaybar end link.

I’d be a little surprised, because the pulse of it is so consistent/metronomic, even. Thanks though, I’ll check it out either way.

I had the same issue , it comes from the motor engine mounts. You need to replace them .
Dealership replaced them under warranty

Thank you! And, also: FML lol. That’s a good $400-$500 for the two mounts, and, probably 5 hours of labor at the least? I’m at ~56k on the odometer; no extended warranty (plus significantly modified anyway). Pay to play...

I realize it isn’t the “right way” to do it, but couldn’t the motor mounts just be unplugged to fix this temporarily?

Good question. I would imagine it would throw a code if you did? To note though, I have not gotten any codes yet for the malfunctioning as it stands.

Mine is making the same noise. Taking it in on Monday. Is it bad to drive on it? I just don’t want it to get worse or damage the engine somehow with excessive vibration etc

I don’t have a definitive answer for you, unfortunately. I’ve still been driving with it currently. The knocking/tapping/solenoid-sound lasts for a minute or two, usually every other time/day I first start driving it. No codes, no other symptoms, car drives perfectly fine. If you wouldn’t mind, could you ask them their opinion on any risks of driving on it for a period of time, if you think of it?

For sure! I’ll ask them. They seem pretty good as I just had my timing chain tensioners replaced per the TSB. I’ll let you know what they say.
