Removed rear bumper per the DIY from Audizine.
Broke all of the clips other than 1 on the quarter panel clips behind the wheels.
What the fuck. Any ideas here? I feel like I’m going to need to buy a new fucking bumper. diy mentioned nothing about these being a bitch.

wrap duct tape around broken pieces, then a slightly larger piece covering bumper area and tab
To keep it classy use silver tape

Less hulk strength? [o_o]
I can't remember how the retaining clips work on the rear bumper but you can probably glue in some new supports and be just fine.

Perhaps the plastic gets brittle with age. I was extremely careful with mine and still broke at least one on mine and my bumper was only a year old at the time.[emoji15]

I did mine last year to pain the diffuser and don't remember it being bad at all...
3 screws along the bottom, 2 or 3 in each fender liner, remove the tail lighs, life up on the retaining bar thing, undo the sides, pull it off.
Something like that.

Yeah. Mine is 2011. I didn’t even know they were there or I would have been more careful.
As mentioned - the bolts and removal is easy. These whore clips on the bumper. Now I’m fucked

Removing the valance to install the ECS CF piece was a real test of patience. I think Audi made it from cheese slices. Had to be so careful not to tear it.

Had no issues with mine, mileage plays a big part in this due to dirt and gravel being there.

We had a B8.5 S5 in our shop a while ago where this happened. The insurance company ended up paying for a new bumper. Not sure if this is the case with a B8 S4 but there was a guide screw that dropped the plastic retainer a tiny bit to loosen the gap to the quarter and allow the bumper to unclip. It was not in any of the Alldata instructions but it was there. I know this doesn't help your situation but maybe it will help someone else.
If it were my car I would use 2-3 very small dabs of two part epoxy on each side when you re-install.

Well, to be fair, it does say: "pull with little pressure and the tabs detach easily."
Your tabs definitely detached easily....
Please go back and add your feedback to that DIY thread as a warning to others.

Here is our plan:
Use epoxy to get the existing back in place as best we can.
Than we’re going take a piece of exhaust tape and cut it in half the long way the full length of that section. Then we will epoxy that tape into place and go from there.
Any other idea?

Sorry, I just couldn't resist. We've all been there with DIY instructions that weren't exactly 100% accurate. That does really suck -- these bumpers aren't cheap.

I don't recall having issues with the tabs in OP's images, but I seem to recall pulling the corner out slightly and then gently lifting up to get each of the remaining tabs outs. I do however recall the bitch of a time I had getting the old diffuser out and the new one in after that; those tabs were really difficult to work out of the bumper with it laying in the grass.

I have the new diffuser in - only 1 tragedy for clips. Wasn’t easy.
Working on fixing the next bumper. I didn’t get the “lift up” memo or the “it’s gonna be brittle” memo.
I’m epoxying and then taping and then expoxying. I only really need this to work once. After that it’s on and the only time it comes back off is if I get rear ended

Isn't there a special tool available to help break the tabs? Another reason not to remove the entire bumper to install diffusers. Its not necessary.
My car is a southern car (read very little rain and road debris accumulation), less than 4 years old and 32K miles and I still had to be SOOO careful not to tear the OEM valance, especially at the corners.

What's the missing step?
The white rod in the tail light. I left it in on removal - pulled the 2 tabs out around it. The angle I pulled may have been why I jacked it up.
Dunno.
At this point - it’s on me. I jacked it up JS I did what I could to fix it for now.
Defuser looks ok. One of the corners I can’t get one of the clips to lock in.
Wish I went agency power and had someone else do the work [emoji23]

So I also installed a rear diffuser this past weekend but had no issue with any of the tabs. (I was gentle since it was my bumper cover's first time) [>_<]
I had to read two DIY's on the bumper removal because I am B8.5 and the procedure is a little different for B8.5 cars. I agree that the DIY needs better pictures, but the white tab portion is pretty significant if you ask me. LOL Sorry that you went beast mode on your removal.
To reply to the person that said there is no need to remove the cover to install a diffuser, I think the B8.5 does require this? I tried installing it (diffuser) with the bumper cover on, earlier in the month, but could not get it to line up correctly.
Also, and I should put this in the DIY thread, I left the rear sensors attached and propped up the passenger side on one rear wheel with a carpet pad over it. Saved a bit of time with that trick.

Sorry to hear/see it.
I just wonder why so necessary to remove bumper for installation process. I deassembled the stock diffuser for paint without removing bumper. It took 5-10 minutes to remove the rear diffuser only. My guess that CF should have exactly the same dimensions and should fit as bolt-on , YES/NO?!

I tried but couldn’t remove the OEM diffuser without breaking the clips and since I have a local buyer lined up for the OEM diffuser I didn’t want to risk breaking them.
The Deval fits like shit for me - which is contrary to almost everything I have read.
The clips in both corners both pop out and the corners have gaps. I’m pushing them back in but after a drive or two - they pop out.
Not thrilled.

I think the difference is between the B8 and B8.5? I got the stock diffuser off no problem earlier in the month, but the CF unit is rigid unlike the stock flexible one. It does not bend and flex so it's harder to line up correctly. I believe that is what makes it so difficult.

Got mine on without removing it and was happy with the fit. I've also seen others install them in YT videos without bumper dismount. I guess YMMV.

Did you not break any clips on the stock one? How did you release them? I could hardly get them release even with the bumper removed.

Looks like you already got it back on but I was going to say you might want to look into a good plastic welder. I’ve breathed new life into a lot of expensive jdm lips on previous cars with some time and patience and it cost almost nothing.
I know how frustrating this is. I had an issue with my ams cold front and some extra length in a hose that had my front jbumper not sitting 100% correct. I fixed the hose and now it seems to have messed up one of the bumper guides. I’ll be replacing that bumper guide this weekend in hopes I can get the alignment back to perfect. I feel your pain.

B8.5 here. I was able to pop my stock diffuser off and install the ECS CF diffuser without removing the bumper. It was very straight forward and didn't take long at all.

So much better looking than stock. Needs bigger tips.
Helps raising the rear up a little to get better access but I had no probs installing diffuser with rear bumper attached.
