Hello all. Like the title says I'm new to the audi world. I currently own a E60 525xi bmw. I'm looking to upgrade and have fell in love with the S line audi. I have been going back and forth between a S4 or a S6. I am looking to do some tuning aswell nothing crazy not gonna be tracking the car but just enough to have some fun when needed. I'm looking to stay around the same size as my BMW give or take a few inches. 80% of the time it's just me driving but I do have 2 kids and my wife aswell we Like to take weekend summer trips. Not far away maybe 5hr drive tops? I have been on the B8-B8.5 forums but recently been looking at S6 models. Figure for another 10-15 grand I can get into something alittle bigger and more powerful. What are some things I should be looking for when shopping around? I want to stay around 60 grand under 50k miles ether CPO or Carmax type of warranty.. I appreciate the advice and tips. Thanks everyone...

With 50k miles you could spend a lot less than 60 grand. Closer to $40k. Decide what model year you want to narrow it down to. 2016 brought the facelift so those are going to be more expensive for sure.
I just bought a 2014 because I wanted to have some remaining factory warranty. I also wanted to find a car with ideally less than 30k miles, which I did. From there, you need to drive some to figure out what options you have to have. I LOVE the B&O sound and wanted the heads up display and top view camera system, blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise, and the sport seats. I ended up with the alcantara headliner also which is a $2000 option. I didn’t want black optics but it’s growing on me now, and really wanted one of the 20” wheel options. Interior trim is another thing to look for—many have the carbon fiber, but mine has the black wood with aluminum inserts which I think is pretty unique. Save a search on the cars.com app and check it out daily. I found a car within a couple months or partner with a dealer to find one. You can buy a warranty so doesn’t have to be factory CPO (they’re just adding cost for the warranty on top of the price).
I have two kids also and am tall at 6’5”. Coming from a 3 series, the S6 was the size I wanted. Drove a beautiful 2016 S4 but I just couldn’t fit in it.
The sky is the limit on tuning these V8s. I’ve got APR stage 2 with APR down pipes and the thing is crazy fast compared to what I’m used to!
Hope this helps—good luck in your search!

I just recently started looking at the S6. I choose 50k miles or less just as a round about. Ideally I would like something with as little miles as possible. I definitely want sport model and the sport diff. 20" black optic package is a must lol and the sport seats. I'm still on the fence if I want to do s4 or s6. Unlike you I'm only 5'7 lol. I'm more concerned about the air ride. How reliable is it? I know if something brakes with that system it will be VERY pricey. I am a DIY guy I work on my own BMW now and do all maintenance on my own. I love turbo cars but I wouldn't mind having a SC car lol. I have saved searches on cars.com carguru and a couple others. I'm getting a nice settlement and I want to splurge on myself for once. I had a 07 Benz E500 that was totaled and had to have shoulder reconstruction surgery because of it. A 22 year old woman blew a stopsighn and tboned me. I only had the Benz for 3.5 weeks lol... but any help with what to look for I do appreciate it. Thanks again... be safe out there everyone..

In November I picked up my 2014 S7 with 43k miles, CPO, for $48k just for a reference. The window sticker has it at $95k brand new.

Not a hatchback fan. I tell you what, if I can find a S8 for a reasonable price I wouldn't mind jumping into that lol. But I don't want to go over 50k for the car. I want to have some left over to buy a AWE touring exhaust with catted down pipes and intake system. Then I want to grab a set of nice summer wheels.. The S4 is a great car but I'm just conserend with room. My wife and I are same hight my kids are 14 and 9 so they are still small lol won't be much taller because there mom is only 5 foot lol... if I wasn't worried about the electronics in the seats I would go for a RS5 but I just think moving the seat back and forth all the time eventually things will start to wear out faster..

Wasn’t even looking at S5’s when i found this one. Miles slightly higher for the year (2015 54k), one owner, premium plus BUT loaded with almost every option including sport diff, Side assist, B&0 etc for 29k .. less miles im seeing em for 35-40k around here.
Its also getting new tires, brakes, plugs and a detail before i pick it up today.
Keep looking and be patient. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20180228/87761bc2cc041c707c93a63a907753af.jpg
Edit: annnd i see a 5 wont work for ya lol
Point still stands, theres nice cars out there just have to be patient.. think i been looking hard for 2-3 months.

These are great cars, we have quite a few locally that we service and modify. They have proven to us to be very reliable even at 70k miles not much fails. One thing to look out for and to check on is if the PCV Valve has been replaced. They have been known to fail on some of the cars, but it is not a widespread enough issue. The Turbos do need to come off to replace it though.
If you do find a car and would like us to inspect it for you, we are happy to do so. If you have any questions about the platform in particular, we are here to help.
Thanks,
Greg

If you can find a post facelift car in your price range, do it! Great fun, and very amenable to mods. As a fellow DIYer, there are many aftermarket parts that are direct bolt-ons that don't require cutting up the car at all.
For MY2016, in addition to the cosmetic changes to front and rear bumpers, the clutch packs are upgraded a bit, it comes with USB ports for the MMI, and the MMI can play lossless digital music files (.flac or .alac) instead of just .mp3 files. Carplay didn't start until MY2017, but I don't particularly miss it. I've got it on a GTI and it is still fairly glitchy.
The S6 REALLY responds to tuning, whether you decide to go APR or EPL (or others), they really wake up the car, making it an absolute blast to drive.
I definitely recommend putting on Eurocode sway bars and end-links early on. You then have the large family sedan you need with massive power and the handling of a smaller car.

I was in your shoes about 1.5 years ago - really wanted a post-facelift car for the sports exhaust (not a huge priority) and upgraded MMI (sometimes i want to hit myself waiting on the menus to load). All things you may want to consider if they would be a deal breaker for you or not. Bought a 2015 S6 that had 9500 miles on it for $55k but did take me a while to find one. I also bought the car from out of state, had the good fortune of having a local shop i trusted look and test drive it for me before i had it shipped (not everyone's cup of tea to not look before buying...haha). Good luck with the search!

Just a quick followup to your note above, the sport model and sport diff are not options in C7 models (2013-2015). Those options started in 2016 C7.5. The C7s all have the sport diff. Don’t let black optics (or lack of) stop you. It’s easy to get those components wrapped as opposed to going the other way if you get a car with black optics and don’t want that. I ended up with black on black with black optics and black 20” 5 spoke wheels and couldn’t be happier with the look even though I’ve always loved the aluoptic mirrors (I may still swap my black ones out—we’ll see)

Sent from my iPhone using Audizine (http://r.tapatalk.com/byo?rid=87676)Oh I didn't know they came with the sport diff I thought it was a added option on all the s models. Black optics your right I can always wrap them. Actually I will wrap them any way with carbon fiber. I have a HUGE role from when I did some of my interior on my BMW. Very easy to use and came out really good. Wheels I'm not worried about because the factory ones will ha e winter tires and summer will have aftermarket wheels with summer tires. But I'm still not sure if I want S4 or S6. The air ride scares me alittle because if one little thing goes wrong it can turn into something catastrophic. I'm not a fan of the B9 S4 so I know if I go that route I'm gonna stick with a B8.5 with sport diff. The sport exhaust isn't a issue ether because I plan on changing that right away with AWE touring and down pipes and need to look around at intakes. But greg from accelerate performance in town here has been a HUGE help with advice on the S4 with what I want to do.

I like the air suspension. It may be more expensive in the long run, but it's hard to argue with how cool it is to be able to lower your car by programming with a VAG COM and it performs well overall. I talked to my tuner about adding AWE Touring to my car with APR downpipes and he said he didn't recommend it. They have installed and then removed those exhausts on multiple cars since people thought it was too loud. I drove a car with stock downpipes and AWE Touring and loved it though :-). Just do your research. Boy, such a hard problem to have to chose between an S4 and an S6 ;-). I chose the S6 because of more space to haul my kids around, more cargo space, I like the styling better, and the V8!

I know about the comfort and dynamic settings but you telling me I can lower the car without lowering kits?? I'm leaning towards the S6 more now because of the room. And the V8 is a added bonus lol. Yeah I have heard them with stock down pipes and AWE touring cat back and it sounded amazing.

Yes, by getting a Vagcom cable ($199 at Europaparts.com) and downloading free VCDS software, you can perform different coding mods to your car, including lowering your S6 by up to 17mm with some coding (you can find a few threads here dedicated to that).
Even better, you can get a lowering module (such as Cete) that can let you lower and raise your car just by using an app on your phone. It's pretty sweet.

Honestly, with your budget, you can pick and choose what you want especially if you are willing to shop nationwide. There are a plethora of vehicles within your budget with less than 15k miles on the Odometer. I personally got mine from 500 miles away with extra options that I would not have otherwise purchased but took since the price was right. I have just done a quick nationwide scan and have seen a few around 58K pretty loaded with less than 10k miles.
Not sure where you live but shop around - your budget gives you great bargaining power where if you work it right you will get one under warranty with CPO added with room for mods like stage 1 tune which I feel is mandatory on this platform.

I want sport package, flat bottom steering wheel, sport dif, and under 20k miles would be better. The lower the miles the better. Black Interior heated seats and B&O speakers. Something about them tweeters that pop up on the dash I find amazing lol. I'm from Connecticut.. Black optics would be preferred but I can always wrap pieces. Flat bottom steering wheel comes on 2016+ but you can always swap it out. If you can afford a facelifted model, (2016+) I’d narrow the search down to that! Sport diff again is on all 2013-2015, but is an option on 2016+. Same for the sport package. I spent so long searching I could identify options the cars had from even the worst set of pictures!!

I do eventually want to add a tune aswell.. But sport package and diff I definitely want. Are there any issues I should look/ask about, things that would through red flags? This is how it's done:
Gauge test / Needle sweep
This will sweep the needles of the speedo and rev counter through their full range automatically when you start the engine.
[Select]
[17 - Instruments]
[Coding - 07]
[Long Coding Helper]
Click on byte 1 and you'll see the selectable option: "Gauge Test/Needle Sweep active"
Check this option
[Do It!]
You can find a well put together list of VAGCOM tested and popular changes here (https://docs.google.com/document/d/1v-dzsYc6OlPT-RGjtRTecjr8Shj85WCZhlQpruSH5XM/edit).

I think it's pretty hard to do the 'active' turn-signal thing, but I'd settle for coding turn-signals to just be the upper 'brow', like on the European 'active' ones. I HATE that turn signals light up basically the entire freaking taillamps. Looks less bad with the parking lights on, but still, I'd just like the upper LEDs, whether tails are on or off. Hopefully somebody knows how to code that[:D].

Lol.. well my budget is around 45k-55k and would ideally like to stay under 25k miles on the car and under 55k so I can do a few mods like exhaust and the air ride control system from phone and possibly a intake for now. I do eventually want to add a tune aswell.. But sport package and diff I definitely want. Are there any issues I should look/ask about, things that would through red flags? I do appreciate allllllll the advice everyone thank you very much.

I don’t think there’s anything real specific to look for other than the combination of options you want and whatever warranty you desire. Less than 25k miles should get you a car without a lot of red flags hopefully! When you find it, you’ll know it. Ended up getting one with clear paint protection film on all front facing surfaces, tinted windows, and APR down pipes (the down pipes I didn’t even know about until after I bought the car, but I was able to transfer the tune to my name and have it reapplied so I got about $3k of value there—plus some serious performance).

I have read alot in these forums over the year and seen alot about Carmax and there warranty. It seems great but my only concern is if I do end up putting a tune to it and then something goes wrong I don't want to be red flagged. Bit I think with the S6 I'm just going To stick to basic mods for now like intake exhaust cosmetic wheels and then after I know the car is worthy and I get to know it then I will start messing with a tune. I have no issue with buying out of state I just need to find a shop that I can trust to check the car out if I find the perfect one out of state.

I considered out of state and I know plenty of people that have done it. I just couldn’t do it though. I drove an S6 with about 35k miles that felt abused, full of rattles, and not “mint”. Cosmetically from pictures it looked great. Other cars at the same mileage seemed basically new. I don’t know how you know unless you drive the car in person. Shipping is also pricey.
I hear ya about inheriting someone else’s mods and the concern they’ve beaten on the car. I had the chance to return my car to the place I bought it from when I found out about the stage 2 tune. I kept the car, but it’s a judgment call.

My car is a 16 PP with Bose, Sport package, LED headlights, Driver Assistance, Carbon Atlas with 16k miles. I have EPL Stage 1 + trans tune, LEDs inside, Alu Kruez, ECS Sways, wrapped door trim, grey satin wrap on entire car, Grey metallic Plastidip luxury metal on inside of doors, 20 RS5 Rotors on Pilot Sports, UV tinted windshield, Dynamat trunk. I have only launched it once before the tune...and its kinda babied. Its my daily but I really take care of it always.
I'm 53 and this is my 65th car...so I guess I'm a unicorn. I say this as whoever gets my car when I decide to let it go will pay a little higher price - but will be getting a perfectly maintained and lightly modded car without it being abused. I have always had those same thoughts when buying a used one...even with under 10k miles. I recently looked at a RS7 with only 4500 miles on it...it just had a feeling of being abused. Little signs like scuff marks inside the foot wells and 3 of the rims had slight curbs and it looked like it had only ever been washed by those automatic car washes leaving the paint less than perfect.
Had I or if I find a RS7 like mine...I'd def swap. And to have a large number of the mods done just saves me time.

I baby the hell out of my BMW. When I brought it it was on the high millage side but the price I couldn't turn down. Plus it had all service records done by the same dealership it was purchased at brand new by the same owner. Yea there are some paint imperfections but all Maintance was kept up with and the inside looked as if it just came off the factory line. My wife tells me I'm gonna wash the paint off the car because I like it clean. I don't like driving around with a dirty car. I clay bar my BMW 3x a year and wash 1x a week. There are no mods don't to it and it will stay that way because there is just no point. But if I found a S6 in the price range and options I'm looking for and there are mods but I have a full service records I would feel more comfortable. If there a no records and looks as if it went through a wire brush car wash then on to the next one lol. But there are those few cara that people trade in like yourself that are taken car of and have few mods just for personal fun and I won't be afraid of picking one up..

So what package would I want to basicly search for. I want heated seats, heated steering wheel I can care less about ( will change to flat bottom if not equipped already) I want sport package for sure. Black optics like I said before I can always wrap them myself. From what I have read and people here have helped me with 2014-2016 the sport diff was standard on the S6? Is that right? And I have found a sight that sells the CETE air suspension module control for the car to your phone where you can air out the bags completely wile parked and personalize ride hight settings.. that WILL be added lol.. I'm also going to add exhaust, intake and eventually a ecu tune and tranny tune..

On my 16 the sports dif is not standard...it came with the S6 Sports Package - Dynamic steering, Sports exhaust systems with black tips, and Sports Differential. The package was $3500.00.

I first started looking at the 2014-2016 S4 but heard from alot of people that the leg room in the back seats is very slim and uncomfortable. But I have 2 kid and 85% of the time it's just me driving or with just someone in the front seats. So Idk I'm gonna have to bring the gang with me when I go and look at the S6 and S4 and have to compare the two.

2015 vs 2016 will have a noticeable price gap (I believe) because the s6 underwent a facelift. Only the cold weather package option has the heated steering wheel. I have a 2015 which only came in the prestige model that year. Honestly think that’s the year you’d want to keep cost down without a bunch of options you don’t want if you don’t care about the facelift look. I am very happy with mine.
I also have two relatively young kids (3.5 and 9 months) and I honestly could not imagine putting them in an S4 - that’s also due to all the crap I have to haul that comes with kids that age...hah. Otherwise the S6 really is more than I need for them.

Lol yeah I know what you mean about the kids stuff. Luckily I'm out of that stage. Mine are 14 and 9. The 14 year old lives with me and 9 year OLD with her mom and with me every weekend so it's not like they are in the car allllllll the time and we really don't do long road trips. We go to Florida every year but I rent a car. ( cheaper and less stress )

I came from a 13' A6 prestige, to a 16' S6 this past November. Ended up searching for quite some time, but ultimately found this car at an Audi dealer in FL. I'm sure you can attest living in CT, but here in Northern VA cars seem to be higher priced as compared to other parts of the country, so I typically try to buy from out of state if possible. Shipping was $300 and process was easy. Our must haves sound quite similar. I had to have black optic, sport exhaust, drivers assist and sport seats. I've seen a few pre facelift models, and while they are basically the same, the facelift just looks so much better IMO. Lower miles would have been better (mine has 36K), but honestly for the price I paid (under $51K, MSRP like $85K) it was a no brainer. Car has been issue free since. Like you said, patience is really key.
Good luck!

Good luck! Thanks man I appreciate it. Yeah I would really like to buy from down south. But I need to find a reliable shop or someone from down south to do a pre inspection for me. I'm going to disney this late June with the family and already told the wife I'm gonna have a look at a few cars wile we are down there. Lol who knows maybe find the one I'm looking for and drive a new car home lol... I would like the facelift model but honestly what are the big difference between the C7 and C7.5 S6? Is there really that much to justify the big price difference?
