View Full Version : How to change a cluster's max speed on guage? Ex: A6 160mph to RS6 200mph

Hey everyone,
Does anyone know if there is a way to change the speedometer of something like a 2.7T to that of an RS6? Here the issue, Im crossing everything over from an RS6 cluster to an A6 2.7 cluster including the custom guages. I'm thinking this is easier that coding the cluster to work in the new car, program the immobilizer, change the mileage and read mpg and miles till empty properly ect. I have the SKC to both clusters so it can be done if needed but i dont think i have enough info on what to cross over coding wise. And Im opening one cluster or the other to solder new LEDs in and install a new LCD screen. So. Can i swap the guage faces and code the 2.7's cluster to display the MPH correctly on a 200mph guage face? If so what is it or where can i get this info? OR where can i get info on putting an RS6 cluster into an A6 and coding everything (not including pair to ECU and key programming) to work seamlessly? I have a Ross-Tech Hex-V2 and a working blue ebay cable if it matters. Thanks

I am wondering that exact same question. What I can tell you is that I have put an rs6 cluster in my a6 2.7t and it reads just fine if you code it in vagcom to read s signal from a v6 instead of v8. I do have a suspicion that just changing these gauges over from rs6 cluster to a6 might not work because I am guessing that the internal circuitry between the clusters is different with the rs6 cluster being able to interpret how to display a speed signal on a 200mph scale and on a 160mph scale in the a6 cluster. I read somewhere that this issue could be programmed around but I could be wrong
Should be able to just swap the rs6 cluster in completely, then code it for auto/manual, gas tank size, etc.

thats what im looking for. I cant find much info on cluster adaptation and coding. Im might just try what was mentioned above and just change it to V8 and see what happens.

Yes, it will work if you just swap the entire rs6 cluster in. Its a different story if you are just changing the gauge faces. I adjust the rs6 cluster to your a6 as I have done, use vagcom and pick instrument cluster and go into the adaptation option and change the cluster to v8 or v6 dependent on the car it is put in.

For some reason i thought there was more to it. If thats it then its a piece of cake.

is this the same for swapping a C5 S6 cluster into a 2001 Allroad as well? This is good info here.
The minor coding I mentioned is easy, adapting the keys is a bit more involved as you have to get an skc code through a program like vag tacho, that is, unless you have a pre immobilizer car. I believe all US allroads have immobilizers but I could be wrong.

Hello, if you could download the dump of your old or new cluster there is no problem to change the speed scale, tacho scale etc using KKL 409.1 cable (blue one) or vag k+can commander cable, or even galetto 1260 cable.
Here is a small instruction (googletranslate form russian) (https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=ru&sl=ru&tl=en&u=http%3A%2F%2Fcolormfa.ru%2Fforum%2Fviewtopic.php %3Ft%3D27%26language%3Den)
There is a special freeware soft (Dash fump edit) to work with dumps (you could bring your immo code, scales, music device code etc from your old cluster to a new s/rs).
In my Allroad I used S6 and RS6 clusters with no coding.
Here (https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=ru&sl=ru&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.drive2.com%2Fl%2F4847829240973 89189%2F) and here (https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=ru&sl=ru&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.drive2.com%2Fl%2F4590554515191 16916%2F) this clusters im my car.
But you should be care wher writing dumps because the C5 clusters 2001-2005 is immo3 and crypted. If you write the wrong dump (from non crypted or just broken) the cluster will be blocked and needs programming eeprom chip.
I could help you to modify your dumps if you send it to me (old and new) if you are not sure in your skills).
Please ask your questions if you have.

Thanks for posting. Is there a version of Dash dump edit available somewhere? And will this allow you to change mileage on a cluster as well?

In my previous post there were link to DashDumpEdit and VAG EEPROM Programmer software.
Here it is the link to author of DDE (DashDumpEdit) blog (https://translate.google.com/translate?hl=ru&sl=ru&tl=en&u=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.drive2.ru%2Fl%2F47176882959312 6099%2F). There are links to both programs it it.
And direct links:

VAG EEPROM Programmer software (https://drive.google.com/file/d/16AtJD7nigsyjoCm1QwXi5wV97p1tXSqc/view)

EEPROM Programmer could easily change the milage :).
I have several dumps with different speed scales and could just change your dump for another scale, if you need.
This is the best post I've stumbled on in a long time and actually might help me! I've got an 01 immo 3 stock cluster with s4 no immo 557L file. I can start and drive without having an rfid in the key with a blinking light, but that's probably common knowledge.
What I need is how to it use both eeprom 8 leg suckers in windows. I've downloaded and installed chr34..... Something something, basically the only program I could find but never works. I'll have to try those out. Albeit on the ecu which I imagine is the same.

I actually do not now this cluster (S4) 2001 immo3. If it is the same type as S6 2001 one, so it will be encrypted. And by using external chip Programmer to pump the dump you will get the encrypted one. But VAG EEPROM Programmer through OBD and KKL cable gives you the decrypted file of the dump where you could see you VIN, etc.
And moreover, you must not write the dump, which was get from 8pin eprom chip of one cluster to another cluster, because it will become deffective (90%).
In earlier immo3 clusters (<2000) which is not encrypted, dump file from the 8pin eeprom chip and external programmer and dump file from VAG EEPROM Programmer software wil be the same.
To clarify.
Can you modify settings on a a cluster that is currently installed?
Can you turn off the immobilizer light on the s6/rs6 cluster?
Thanks!

Yes, if you will get the dump using VAG EEPROM Programmer software and kkl cable through obd socket and then send it to me. Besause I'm not in USA.

The immo light could not be turned off in the dump. Only disassemble the cluster and use non transparent film or get out the led ).
It is probably possible to turn off the display message and sound. I'll check and clarify a bit later

Changing just the dials (fitting the RS6 faces to the A6 cluster) will NOT work. There’s no way to correctly code the A6 cluster to be accurate, with regards to the RS6 scale.
I’ve been there, done it. The only (correct) way is to fit the entire RS6 cluster, and code it to the A6’s values - gas tank size, distance to empty, tacho as per Ross-Tech’s instructions.

Gauged made an RS6 bezel/ dial replica set for application to A6/ AR/ S6/ C5 clusters.
There was remote programming required from Boosted Euro to "calibrate the stepper motor" to make it work on the non RS cars.
I can't tell you if it worked or not though haha

You could not code the A6 cluster to be accurate, with regards to the RS6 scale using Vag-Com and Ross-Tech’s instructions. But!!! I (and anyone who could deal with hex editors and excell) could esayly correct the dump of A6 cluster to S6 or RS6 scale.
You need 4$ blue KKL cable (link (https://www.ebay.com/sch/i.html?_odkw=vag+4.09&_osacat=0&_from=R40&_trksid=m570.l1313&_nkw=kkl&_sacat=0)) and VAG EEPROM Programmer software (see the link above) to read the dump (from A6 and from RS6 clusters for examle to get the speed scale data out of it).
I could decribe the process if anyone is interested in.
In the attachment above the place in the dump where the scale information and checksumm are. Just an example.
