View Full Version : DSG Clutch Pack Upgrade

For those who went stage 3 on their S6, has anyone looked into upgrading the clutch packs in the DSG to handle more torque? I recall when I had my BMW M5 that those who went with bigger turbos upgraded their clutch packs and the cost to do so was reasonable. I believe most people see SSP. Supports 900+lb torque. Here is link. http://sspperformance.shopgate.com/item/323337

Would love to know more about this as well, but honestly haven't looked into it yet.

Great topic! As stated, many more S cars are going stage 3. I threw this info in the dyno thread so I will repost here as well.
According to ETKA, and our long lost friend Vol/A3 turbo/etc, Audi added a few upgrades to the trans/clutches in the facelift cars. Specifically 2 more friction disks, 2 more steel plates and a much thicker C2 clutch circlip.
As Andre stated, we don't know what that translates to in terms of additional power/torque it can withstand, but I have to imagine it accounts for something. Maybe better longevity

Thanks again for that info- makes me feel a bit better. Would be awesome to have a backup plan if any issues develop over time.

Glad you opened up a thread dedicated to this quite intriguing topic. I'll be following this thread with keen interest, since Stage III is undoubtedly in my future.

I am looking at the following as mine has started to play up. 65k on clock and last 10k on stage 1.

Take note that the clutch pack options at your link both exclude S6 from the list of applications. This is true of both the 600 and 800 lb/ft options:
Designed to fit OEM Clutch Basket *DL501 – 7 speed Longitudinal Audi A4, S4, A5, S5, Q5, RS5*
However if you look up the kit on USP Motorsports' website, the fitment warning is even more explicit:
Designed to fit OEM Clutch Basket *DL501 – 7 speed Longitudinal Audi A4, S4, A5, S5, Q5, RS5* (Only fits B8/B8.5 S4/S5 for US Model vehicles)
URL for reference: https://www.uspmotorsports.com/Drivetrain/DSG-Parts/SSP-Stage-3-Audi-800-Ft-lbs-Torque-Clutch-Package.html
That isn't to say it categorically cannot work - I'm not familiar with the details of the different versions of the DL501 to make such a statement - but you'd want to be absolutely certain of fitment before purchasing and attempting installation.

Hey guys, a question related to the topic I hope to get answered here [:D]: Who makes our DCT tranny? And by that I mean who makes it, not who assembles it (which is Audi). Since it has a parking feature, it's not Getrag, so my guess is ZF, since Porsche uses it in its PDK. Thanks gang.

I would recommend contacting these guys about this and work with them to get something for the S6/7 transmissions. https://www.dodsonmotorsport.com

Yes, the S6/7 uses the DL511, but it is extremely similar to the DL501 used in the S4 & has the same torque rating.

Any idea of the notable differences?

I've been confused by that as well. For example, APR clearly describes their TCU tune for S6/S7 as "DL501 S tronic TCU Upgrade for the 4.0 TFSI Platform (https://www.goapr.com/products/tcu_upgrade_dl501_40t.html)". Anyone have a link they can point to which identifies the C7/4.0 S Tronic as DL511 (or any other specific transmission identifier)?

The 4.0T self study is speaking of:
S6 Transmission DL511-7Q
A8/S8 Transmission AL551-8Q AL551-8Q
Curious aswell, +80.000km on mine, recently did a clutch recalibration and it took pretty long (but not sure if that is an indication weather they are fairly worn or not). Got quote around 2.000-2.500€ including work to replace with stock parts. The SSP kit was the only kit i had read about, not sure if it ever got installed in the S transmission. Running 877Nm/647Ft-lb here on stage 2 (on dyno we went up to 890Nm be decided to reduce it a bit).
If facelift is running an upgraded clutch kit, that would be a nice alternative.

$2200+ including shipping is too expensive. What are alternate options?

Both 2013-2017 S6 & 2010-2016 S4 have the OB5 transmissions.
It looks like there was a minor change from the 2013 S6 to the 2014 S6 transmission, also some minor changes on the S4 transmission every year from 2010 to 2013.

so pulled the trigger on DEKA STAGE 3 clutch. Now just gotta decide if it something i could tackle myself, or have a shop to do it. I have a very hard time giving anything to any shop... lack of attention to detail usually. Anybody know any shops/mechanics around midwest that would know wtf their doing when it comes to DSG?

I don't have a shop recommendation for you, but I can give you price data. I got two quotes: one from an Audi specialist for $4600, another from a guy who does work on the side for $3500.
