How can I get my B8.5 to sound as good as my 3.5 liter VQ35DE in my 350z? :) Maybe not possible but would love to hear opinions or sound clips of the "best" sounding b8 you have come by. Old sound clip of my Z for reference https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=L2vfqnbJwMI

First, trying to make one engine sound like a completely different engine doesn't happen. Exhausts are as subjective as favorite foods. The only way, is to search on youtube for "B8 S4 exhaust", and use headphones. Hundreds of videos to get a feel for what you like. Resonated vs non resonated and X-pipe are significant factors on these. Look/listen to some custom setups as well. I will throw a personal shoutout to magnaflow's resonated x-pipe replacing front resonators for the great bang for the buck, and not too wild/raspy.
Forgive, me. I'll be careful. 350Z-370Z engines, regardless of exhaust, are not prime examples of "good sounding". Maybe a loud exhaust is intended to cover up the harsh mechanical sounds coming from the engine itself. Tons of car journal publications have criticized the sound of the VQ35 series engines. That is a great engine. Just not a great sounding one.
And, FWIW, change in exhaust is not a power mod for 8.5 3.0T engines. It only changes sound.
Your money will be better spent on actually making more power - consider a pulley upgrade (crank or s/c) with stage 2 tune from one of several reputable companies. HP gains are phenomenal - well over 100 horsepower more, just by tuning to take advantage of the higher rpm spinning s/c. The engine is seriously undertuned from the factory.

Agree to disagree, most car enthusiasts I know regard the VQ35 as one of the best sounding stock cars around. Its just clean sounding.
Edit: I will agree they tend to fall apart sound-wise with any kind of exhaust modification, oddly enough.

Agreed. Resonated Touring AWE seems to be popular but to each their own.

So subjective but I would recommend an intake to unleash that supercharger whine and focus on that sound. It is addicting to listen to, I love it.
I like my awe touring very much but the whine is where it’s at imo.

S5 Owner coming from a VQ35DE Altima 6 Speed here, and I have to agree with OP.
Coupled with the Nismo exhaust, I thought my car sounded pretty legit.
The '14 S5 is a whisper out of the box, and the "Exotic" raspy sound of most offered exhaust systems isn't for me.
That being said, i am planning to get a AWE touring edition system and call it a day.

My R32 sounds great. The S4 will never sound like it no matter what’s done. I accepted that a long time ago.

This. Cylinder dome shape, port shape, valve size, valve and cam timing, manifold style (and space limitations), runner length, etc, are all part of the equation that makes one engine sound unique. You can't change any of those easily except the easily modified exhaust piping and resonators/mufflers, but they only affect tone and volume.

The R32 is a good, notable exception to the typical raspy sound from most V6 engines (Audi, too) when the exhaust is opened up and resos are minimized or deleted. The narrow cylinder bank angle, I believe only 15 degrees, makes it behave more like a straight six - think sexy older Jaguar 6s.
Good straight through resos do not diminished power however. They can tune out unpleasant frequency resonances by attenuating sound waves at harsh frequencies while not reducing flow. They can reduce the unpleasant rasp common to V configuration 6 cylinder engines, but only so far. Start removing them and the exhaust sounds tinny, raspy.
Finally, loud and raspy does not equate to fast. There are stage 2+ low 11 second S4's here with basically stock exhausts. The flow is quite good.
You can always record 350z engine sound and play while you drive

this question would be better phrased "how can I get my b8 s4 to sound like my previous Shelby GT350, E39 M5, E90 M3?"
sadly that will never happen for me and i really miss the way those cars sounded but the S4 has many other things going for it... like being able to drive out in the 12 inches of snow we just received today

A few guys from my old platform, the mx6/probe, we're able to make their cars sound like a 350z by installing a 350z muffler. I think it's the unique design that gives it that tone.

Figuring out how to get a depreciated RS5 might also be worth. As this is the only V8 in the B8 platform.

catback vr6 > stock vq35 > catback e39 s62 > stock e39 s62 > stock vr6 > catback vq35 > catback 3.0t > stock 3.0t.
and imho a catback 3.0t barely sounds better than a catback e46 m3.

get a Miltek resonated (or non-resonated depending on your volume preference [evilsmile]) exhaust, swap in a set of straight thru test pipes.

'Best' is subjective, but maybe less subjective is to say that the 350z (and VQ35DE in general) had a very distinct and recognizable exhaust note from the factory. To my ears it is just as recognizable as a 5.0 Mustang. I went through 3 exhaust setups on my 350z - stock, Fujitsubo Legalis-R with JIC Y-pipe, and Invidia Gemini True Dual (with the Fujitsubo setup being my favorite) - and while I miss the sound of that car, overall I actually prefer the sound of my B8.5 S4 with AWE Touring and resonated downpipes. Of course the S4/AWE combo has its downfalls like weird hissing/"weedwhacker" sounds at low speed part throttle application, but those issues are well documented elsewhere so I digress.
EDIT - Just for fun:
