View Full Version : Question/Help on Color Matching Gloss Black RS Grill and Non Gloss RS-style fog light

Hi guys
Wonder if anyone has come across this. Just received a new RS style grill in gloss black and also from the same vendor, a set of honeycomb fog light grills that are much less glossy. Before I put this on I was thinking it would make sense to try to color match the fog light grills with some kind of glossy topcoat. Wondering if anyone has any good experience with some relatively high durability spray paint to glossy them up a little?
Pics below, not the best quality I know, but hopefully shows the difference

To be honest, not sure if you’ll be able to see that much of a difference when on the car.
Out of curiosity, where did you get the fog grilles? I have ones that look exactly the same I haven’t put on yet. Oddly, I’m in the opposite situation. My grille is matte black and the fogs only came in gloss. So I’m kinda wondering the same thing but in reverse lol

I got them off the Walmart website strangely enough. Were about $170 for the pair

I took my glossy mesh to a paint shop and had them matte out the black. A couple of rattle cans would probably do just as good.

I have a similar glossy grill & just installed the same fog light grill. I can’t really tell the difference once installed.
While I’m assuming the open fog light grill might help w/ better airflow to the intake, I’m actually more concerned that a bunch of debris/rain/snow/salt would go in the area of the now exposed components. It might just be paranoid but don’t know the long term impact. Thoughts?

I sprayed my oem fog light grilles with a glossy black paint to match my gloss black RS4 grille and it came out great. Since it’s gloss black going over flat black when you get a little chip it really isn’t noticeable at all. I forget exactly what I used but really any exterior gloss black meant for plastic will suffice. Depending on the texture of that aftermarket fog grille, you may want to first hit them with some type of adhesion promoter. Wasn’t necessary for the stock grilles.

I went the route of gloss black spray paint form Home Depot to color match and I’m happy agh how it came out.
On the Walmart grill only thing I don’t love is the mount for the rings is not honeycomb- just a big chunk of black plastic. I sprayed it gloss too, but I would prefer it to be honeycomb or just the shape of the rings

Looks great- I did the same thing with the gloss black spray too. Yes I was also concerned about the openness and bought some wire mesh to mount behind it but didn’t like how it came out so didn’t mount it. I will have to just check on it once a month or so make sure there’s no debris, rocks, squirrels etc lodged in there

Alternatively, I bought mine from eBay. It might be the same seller. It shipped from CA & it’s the same price. Here’s the link eBay link (https://m.ebay.com/itm/2013-2016-Audi-A4-B8-5-RS4-Style-Front-Bumper-Fog-Light-Grilles-Gloss-Black/122387556928)
