Bought my CPO S4, came with damaged MMI faceplate and dealer put vinyl wrap to clean it up.
MMI is fine and operational, just cosmetic scratches from previous owner.
Looking to clean things up and get back to OEM.

Two part question:
1) Can I just replace MMI faceplate or do I need whole new unit and get reprogrammed?
2) Does anyone have instructions to remove MMI unit if I would have to resort to replacing whole unit?

If I do ever get rid of the car later, I'd like to not getting dinged on it.

Thanks in advance. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171228/21f7eb72c549b9447a093f8dbc390ebc.jpg

Im not sure if interior damage you are describing should have passed CPO inspection or been sold as a CPO. If you had mentioned it presale maybe they would have replaced trim free. I would check the CPO inspection paperwork closely and see what the interior/trim condition requirements are for CPO certification and see if there is any possibility that it was overlooked or pencilwhipped.

Thanks, yeah I been through a lot with them on it. Got other stuff fixed, long story, so really just want to move on and get it fixed myself.

I would prefer if it's only a faceplate that I need to replace. But just need someone's confirmation that a faceplate replacement is possible or if whole MMI unit is required.

You can certainly replace just the faceplate. I don't know how easy it is going to be to find a replacement. You may be better off buying a dead unit in good condition and stealing the faceplate from that. Removal of the unit requires the VW radio removal keys, they slide into two slots on the radio, unlock the locking tabs and then it slides right out and you can do what you need to with it.

I've been able to find misc. trim parts on Ebay

That's great news :), yes all I need is faceplate as it is only cosmetic damage and is bugging me every time I drive.

I'm in Canada so we don't have 3G unit, so same unit minus the SIM card slot. Very hard to find and been searching for a while now.

The keys needed are cheap. I got these and they worked great: https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B01N9DMEU9

To get the MMI unit out, you have to remove 2 8mm head bolts. Those are covered by the vents. To get the vents off you have to take off the trim around the screen and gauges. Here's a picture of that process: https://lh4.googleusercontent.com/--MP9rxqKUI4/Uzg1XP-_JNI/AAAAAAAAJsk/tG7Bh8oc5Tc/s1107/mmi-screen-trim-removal.jpg

To pull the vents, use a pick or hook tool to reach a hole in the vents and pull. Once those are out you can remove the bolts and use the removal tools to pull the MMI unit. There's 4 or 5 connectors on the back that are color coded for the most part.

They probably put the vinyl on since they knew it was scratched. The face plate will in screw off easily, but can’t be purchased by itself. I do see broken units on eBay, might be your best bet, then swap the face over. Too bad, I just sold a broken unit here with good face.

He doesnt need to remove the display for the mmi but rather the mmi unit itself. Just stick in the keys and it slides out. The rest of the instructions you have below are not needed.

Haha, OMG, I didn't even notice that the frame those two bolts are holding in doesn't slide out when you pull the unit with the keys. Sigh, sorry for the misinformation.

Please don’t use the cheap radio removal tools. I did and ended up getting one stuck in the slot and had disassemble the radio and bend and twist parts inside it to get the tool to release. You might pick out and get a good batch, but for $5 to $10 more I woul play it safe and just buy OEM ones.

With that out of the way, you can just remove the faceplate (please see above to see how I know this) and it isn’t too hard but finding a replacement might be hard as it doesn’t look like Audi sells it separately. So you may have to just buy the unit from a junkyard to source the part you need.

For what its worth, I bought the cheopo keys, had zero issues using them and removing them from the MMI unit.

It's ElsaWin, the software they used in the dealer shops...I think they use something different now. You can find it online in various places..torrents and such.
