hey fellas, i haven't been around the board too much lately, but I'm hoping you all could help a brother out. So from very early on since i've had my car, the sub will make a scratching, distortion type of sound. Think of when you have your headphone plug touch a piece of metal or you're putting it in the slot while the music is on. you get that kind scratchy sound. It's like that. it's completely inconsistent, but tends to act up after some punchy bass. But i'll rewind it to the same spot in the song and it wont do it again. it'll happen for a couple minutes then go away for months, only to come back. It's aggravating because i can't reproduce on demand. Which means trouble shooting it is next to impossible. When i had the car at the dealer under warranty, of course they couldn't reproduce it.

here's clip of recently when it started happening right when i got home, so i was able to keep the music going and record it with my phone. Right at 15 seconds of the clip you'll clear a kind of scratch like i'm moving the phone around or something. it's actually coming from the sub.

I have no idea if it's the sub or some connection. I don't have a ton of time to take things apart and troubleshoot 15 ways to sunday any more, so i'm trying to get some ideas and check them all out in as few sittings as possible. The easiest way to diagnose if its the sub or a connection leading up to it would be to swap out the sub. But i don't want waste money buying one only to find out its not it.

This is where a favor request comes in. Those who have replaced their B&O sub, anybody still have theirs around, and if so, anybody willing to help me out and pay it forward a bit? would you be willing to send it to me (i'll pay for shipping)? if it works out that that fixes the problem, i'll even throw you another $25 for it. if it doesn't solve the problem, we can figure out what to do with it ( i could try to sell it and send you the proceeds for example).

for those who can offer any advice, i'm all up for troubleshooting ideas. But please err on the side of more detailed explanations. i'm no engineer, and while i've upgraded stereos and know basics, it'll be faster if you just give me more info up front. I won't be offended if you think you're insulting my intelligence by over explaining.. [:)]

and fwiw, i have no big desire to upgrade the sub. i'm not that big of an audiophile. i'm perfectly good with it (when its working right). and if i were to upgrade it, i'd want a plug and play replacement. no mods to the decking or wiring. just plop something new in to replace the old one. are there any out there that are compatible? i seem to recall a pioneer one ?

Wow thats a diatribe of a novel you typed up therd. Inconsistent scratch sounds like possible interference on VC. Maybe a shaving got in it? Have similar issue with one of my midrange focal speaker and confirmed I accidentaly put a few shavings into the VC by drilling in the location the speaker was at. Live and learn leason on my part.

i try to provide as much info as possible for people who take time to help. :) I know i get annoyed when people ask for help and then you have to ask them for 15 things to try and narrow it down.

anyway.. what's VC? i'm sure i'll slap my forehead when someone answers but i'm drawing a blank.

ah. right.

so hopefully it's just a matter of taking it out and blowing out any shavings or other crap that may have gotten in there.

if that doesn't do it, i sure hope it's just the sub. that's an easy replacement/fix vs hunting down some other connection problem.

Yeah what he said. Blowing out can work but if it is a metalic shaving it might stick to the magnet. Be careful how much air pressure you put towards it. With that said might be better to just upgrade to the JL 8ohm 10" swap. There is a really good write-up in the forumn about that. Might be more worth it to do that being that you will need to tear the top shelf off to get to the VC of the BO sub.

yeah, upgrading to a bigger one would be waaay more work than i want to put into this. i've looked through that definitive upgrade thread. Tons of info in there, but tough to sort through the plethora of stuff that doesn't apply to me.

Or the Pioneer swap
is this the Pioneer one?

or is there another? this one is 2-ohm dual coil, so i guess that makes it 4-ohm? but that's still not the 8 of the stock one. So wouldn't that require something to keep it from getting blown, or messing up the amp?

JL 10" 8ohm was like 80 bucks new and is a drop in replacement.

So dual 4ohm or single 8ohm impendence.

i thought the 10" ones needed modification to the rear deck? maybe i need to re-sort through that other thread10" fits, needs caulk strip filler on top between deck and sub. And only 3 holes line up with factory layout. Other than that its a drop in from the diy thread I read.
