View Full Version : Car Locking Me Out Normal?

Since the last couple of months, I've noticed a weird behavior with my car.

If I'm in the car and with keys in ignition and I decide to step out (fill up gas etc.). The car locks the driver door again and I'm stuck outside while with the keys inside are still in ignition. Doesn't make a difference if the car engine is off or on.

Is this normal? It didn't happen before and I only have one key. To make things worse, my door key lock doesn't even work from outside.

I've already had to pay someone to open the car for me, was stuck in a gas station after filling up gas [:|] I now keep the back seat unlocked so I can get in from the trunk if it happens, the trunk always stays unlocked [>_>] used that to get into my car last night when I was stuck again! [headbang]

Any ideas or solutions would be appreciated.

Happened to me before too. I always leave at least one window half way down when gassing up just to be safe smh.

This is interesting, I would think the key in ignition should prevent car locking...

Given your key doesn't work in the lock, makes me think someones messed with the central locking or replaced the locks at some point. Mine doesn't lock when I get out.

Definitely not normal. The only time mine will auto-lock is if the car is locked from outside, and then I unlock it with the remote but don't open a door. After a minute or so it will automatically re-lock as a safety precaution.

I would think the opposite; if your key is in and someone is trying to steal your car wouldn't you prefer the doors to be locked?

I don't ever leave my keys in when I'm not in the car but can't you just leave your driver door cracked?

No this is not normal. My car won’t lock if the keys are in the car. In fact when I wash the car I’ll throw the key in on the front seat so the doors don’t keep locking and unlocking as I wash it.

My Passat driver door lock was removed by the previous user. I had a couple times when the battery died so there was no power locks. My solution was also to leave one of the backseats unlocked so I could climb in through the trunk. However I like the driver door slightly open suggestion.

x2. This is the correct behavior. If you open a door, it will not relock, it will stay unlocked forever.

PS I'm not sure if only opening the trunk will also prevent it from relocking.

Throwing your keys inside the car isn't keeping the doors unlocked. You can simply press the unlock and then open and shut the door.

Had it lock me out twice with engine running. Luckily I was near home and had my second key handy. I was told it can happen if the key battery is running low. Replace battery, don't leave keys inside)

Nah that’s super weird. Sounds like your remote is glitching out.

I had this happen with my MK IV. It was like the locks had a mind of there own at times. Never figured it out.
