I think I just messed up. I went to look at a 2004 2.7T allroad with 164000 miles on an automatic transmission. Test drive went great until I got to the parking lot after the drive and shifted from park to reverse. When doing so there was a decently loud clunk with a 2 second pause and then another loud clunk. Going from reverse to drive made very little noise.

The vehicle has full Audi service history and shows the timing belt change 30000 miles ago as well as transmission fluid and filter changed 30000 miles ago.

The seller is Moving overseas in one week and is desperate to get rid of the vehicle. As soon as he heard the issues with the roof transmission he dropped down to $2300. He said someone else is coming to look at it tomorrow but I said to call me if that person doesn't buy it.

I didn't purchase the car.. but.. did I mess up? Did I let the transmission scare me to much? It should be mentioned there are some issues with the air suspension as well.

Sorry the OP has quite a few typos, I did voice to text while driving home..

But yea, I figured, I just couldn't help but start second guessing myself the second I started driving away [:/]

No.. I drove away and was second guessing my decision the whole way home. Thinking I was possibly passing up a good deal!

But no. I'll stick with the A4 I guess.

Yeah, offer like $1500 if everything else is mint and then manual swap it

Definitely if it's what you want and willing to do the trans swap it is worth doing especially if it was dealer maintained

from the tone of the email it sounded like you messed up by buying the car [:)]. Move on unless it is a 6 speed allroad and its tranny is also in good shape (plenty of shot 6 speeds out there as well but you can tell by impossible to shift into 1is or 2nd gear or synchro grinding).

Haha sorry I think I'm confusing people.. I did NOT buy the car.. The massive clunking in reverse really scared me away from it.. but I was worried I made a mistake by NOT buying it!

Oh well.. The A4 will be getting the love and attention it needs.. It's a manual and runs like an absolute champ.. I need to start appreciating the beaut I already have! [:d] Thanks for everyone's input, it helped me feel better about my decision.

There's a nice looking 2004 in KC for sale, just down the street from me:

So what were they asking for the Allroad? I am in Denver let me know the details.

Just got my Stage 3 out of the garage to break in the clutch.

Ha!- I most certainly got this car the day after you looked - in Gunbarrel? - I didn't think it clunked that bad, but I am new to Allroads - I just got the Arnott air springs installed (that was the "issue" that I was worried about)

.. So far, so good, but now I am nervous.

The torque converter is a know bad part in these cars. That could be the problem

Well this is a super late reply, sorry I didn't see this. But yea, it was up in Gunbarrel.. Have you had any issues with it?.. Like I said above, if I held the brake, put the car in reverse, and then just stayed like that, it would make a bunch of noises and lurch a couple of times.. Otherwise it was a fun ride..
