View Full Version : Fan running loudly and at high speed

My car just came out of the dealership service center after having the driver side door latch assembly replaced. I noticed yesterday and today that the fan seems to be running awfully loud. At first I thought it was just because I hadn't had the car in a couple of days, but the wife noticed it too.

I turned off the climate controls and had the car parked and it does seem to be the radiator fan. I'm waiting on a callback from the service department to see if they think it is related to their work, but in the meantime I was wondering if anyone here thinks it could be a prelude to a failing thermostat or anything?

The waterpump was replaced on the car at roughly 12k miles due to a failure, and it hasn't been a problem since. The car doesn't appear to be overheating either, but I haven't let it sit and idle for a while either.

Any thoughts?

Yup I'm almost certain that it's the thermo acting up. It's a relatively common issue.

Damn :| Thanks guys, I wonder if they'll diagnose it and/or replace it on my word haha. New baby coming anytime in the next week and would like to not be down the S4. I mean the wife has an Outback but... >.> :)

Edit: Does the supercharger have to come off when they replace the thermostat?

It's always when you least expect it. You could wait until it sticks, but then you run the risk of being stranded with a pregnant wife in the car. Cant imagine the door latch repair is related, but I'd see what the dealer says first and then ask about possible T-stat failure to see what they say.

Yes, supercharger does have to be removed, that's why it is so damn expensive to fix, the part costs almost nothing.

Thanks for the info man. Yeah, worst case scenario I'll do it myself, but maybe I'll be lucky and the warranty will pick it up - they've been really good so far. Either way yeah I think I'll try to get it fixed now. I doubt it was related to the door too, but you never know haha.

I heard my fans kick in two days ago as I was driving... 10 minutes later noticed my temp gauge go up to H. Dropped it off yesterday at an indy shop. Expect to pay $900+ at an indy shop and even more at the dealer. It happens to the best of us :(

PS- Do not risk driving long distances. my car overheated after just a 10 minute drive (after being parked overnight). Otherwise you will have to pull over every 5 minutes and let it cool down.

$900+ at an Indy they ripped you off?? Do yourself a favor buy the thermostat $40 or less if I remember correctly and do it yourself or bring it to your favorite Indy shop they will quote 6 hours (or at least they should) I paid $510 in labor shop said they did it in just under 6 hours.

EDIT: Was the first one they did can be done in 5 and 1/2 or less.

Fun never stops with these cars :D

Honestly it's been overall reliable, just sad to see the second thermostat go already, supposedly it was replaced with the water pump at 12k miles, it's got 78k miles now.

you got a great deal... think most people have paid more, the shop said it would take 8 hours or so. I am also getting PCV valve done. I'm hoping this is the last of my issues

Same exact happened before my t-stat crapped out. I took it to an indy and did it for <$500. Very happy about that. About a 3.5 hour job. Good luck.

For a thermostat and waterpump:
Audi: ~$2300.
Indy Shop 1: ~$1300
Indy Shop 2: ~$800 take off part price for waterpump ~$600

Ultimately did it myself: no more than $300 including beer and lunch with friends.
