Hey guys, as some of you have already seen my other thread about my new car I have a quick question... Under WOT the car knocks... I have heard others knock at WOT that are chipped... Is this normal for a chipped car at all? It did have three codes in it when I picked the car up today but cleared them and they didn't come back...

One code was for the Secondary Air Pump which I am not concerned about... Another was for the N75 valve being shorted and another about the Cam Position Sensor not set to zero?! (Intake) Car runs great other than the knocking at WOT like I said, I have heard others that are chipped do it... I am using 91 octane...

Oh, and another thing... What does the red after the T in 1.8T mean in the back of the car? I haven't really seen it before but saw something on teh intarweb that said Audi only puts these on cars above 200hp which I call bs since I am sure this car doesn't have 200 hp... Feels like a lil bit above that but I dunno! Maybe someone just put it there for fun huh?!

it was my understanding that the red thing after the 1.8t meant that the car had sport package....

Cool, thanks for that info... And an update of what I have discovered so far! The car has a dp which is awsome... Now I just need a high flow and an intake!! BUT, for the chips...

I don't have GIAC/Neuspeed cause my redline is still stock (tested that out today)

APR didn't say anything on their site about raising the limit and I haven't looked at Upsolute... I guess I will find out when I put my BOOST guage in this week...

The red T means you have a 2001.

Red wing on the T means its a 2001.5.

It has a K03 sport turbo, usually with the 'sport' package like my car.

About the knocking - I havent knocked the car since Ive been chipped.

It could very well be your N75 valve since your getting a CEL about it. Id replace it.

I didn't knock at all when I was stock, but after I got the GIAC x-chip the car knocked at bit at WOT and low revs (2500-3500 RPM, peak boost). Over a period of about a week the car tuned it out and now it doesn't seem to knock anymore. I think the timing is just too aggresive out of the box for pump gas, even though I have the pump gas program. It's certainly not a good thing in my opinion. I talked with my installer who talked with GIAC and they said it was to be expected, which I thought was BS. If I ever have to reset my ECU (disconnect battery) and it starts knocking again I'm taking the car back to have the program changed.

The red "T" indicates the 170HP version of the 1.8T engine. Only came in 2001 as far as I know. The prior model years came with 150HP stock. The 170HP version seems to run a bit more boost out of the box...mine ran 10-12 PSI when stock. The earlier cars seem to run more like 7-8 PSI.

it cant only be 2001.5 because mine is a 2001.0 and has the red T thing.

instead of speculating....why not just open up your ecu?

make sure you look over your car thoroughly first before you mod. I've seen ricers mod without knowing what they're doing coz they think just by adding so and so will give them +50000 hp. vag log/chart your car before modding, so you know how your car performs before and after.... it's all just precautionary steps but it'll make your modding/maintenance a lot smoother/easier

btw.. black on black is pure sex!!

i've heard various A4's chipped that knock. Here in Cali we only get 91 oct. You can always try running a colder plug if there is no revision for the software you have.

All 01's have the flag after the T. You can distinguish 01.5 from early 01's by the mnfg. date. anything after may would be 01.5, And to distinguish sport from non-sport would be the rims(if stock) sports came with 17s and non-sport 16s.

Well, I have sport everything else but wheels...

problem with opening up the ecu is that the 2001s can be flashed....

not necessarily a chip soldered in... so it could look stock...

Like I said, as soon as I get my boost gauge in I can tell..

IIRC, apr's is a 93 octane program right?

i dunno about GIAC's for the newer years, but mine is a 91 octane program, so i dont knock, because above 89, the only option is 93/94 and thats what i use...

Ah i dont find that to be exactly true.

My car was sport with 16's and its a 01.5

in 2001 there was a "celebration" package. which came with 17's (rs4 lookalikes) sport suspension and the works......there was also a strait "sport package" that came with 16's, with lower suspension (red shocks). and then there was normal package.

really? so a true distinguisher is the red springs? [confused]

No, red shocks. The springs are still black.

The celebration package was only available in 2001.5.

The reason it shows higher knock readings at first is because the xchip is designed to work within a octane range that is as high as 95 octane. This means the ecu will adjust the adv timing for different octane levels and not just run well on just 1 set level. This means if you are running 91 octane now and decided to put in 94 in later, the ecu will adjust the adv timing and allow you to take advantage of that higher octane. This is why there is only 1 xchip for 91 and 93/94 octane for all of the country for each of the ecu's for 2001-2001.5.
