View Full Version : Ambient temperature dependent rattle

My 4.2 will cold start with no rattle at outside ambient temperatures above 50F. It can sit for weeks and still start with no detectable rattle. This changes however when ambient temps drop below 50F. As temperatures drop it occasionally develops a brief 1-2sec cold start rattle. I've been able to reduce but not always eliminate the rattle by cranking the motor for 15 sec before letting it start.

If temperatures are below freezing it will likely rattle even after sitting for just 4 hours. The starter solenoid is going bad and cold weather affects it however after 4 hours it will still immediately crank so I suspect there is residual warmth within the bay, but there's still possibility of a rattle on startup.

Could this be a check valve issue? Any thoughts are appreciated.

What do u mean cranking the motor for 15 secs??? Hand turning the motor with a wrench/ratchet or holding down the key. I hope ur not talking about holding the key in the starting position for 15 secs....... man... if ur doing that u could possibly shear the teeth off the starter. And ur also taxin the shit out of ur starter if u keep trying to crank on it. Also is ur engine modified?

To be clear, I cut fuel and bump it in 2-3 sec intervals maybe 5 times. I'm not talking about ritually doing this and maybe I'm lucky the starter never failed.

Regardless It's a stock bhf
