Hi, I drive a 1999 a4 quattro 2.8l 5 speed manual AHA with 216xxx miles. I've been wanting to change the transmission and differential fluid for a long time and now I finally have the chance but I have a few questions first. I know where the fill and drain plugs are on the tranny and dif and I have the special triple square tool. I watched this video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6fBcVz1El9Y and this guy had two drain plugs for the tranny, of course it is for an s4 and not an a4. So for my manual a4 trans there is only the one drain plug which is the triple square right? Also, I've been reading up on what fluid to use and it seems that everybody has a different opinion. My Haynes manual says 75w90 synthetic gear oil for the trans, but is that GL4 or GL5? For the Differential, it says GL5 90 synthetic gear oil. So I was going to use Redline but what is the difference between the regular 75w90 and the MT90? And can I use the same fluid for both the trans and the dif? And is it GL4 or GL5? So I guess really my question is, what is the correct fluid for the trans and the dif?

Any help much appreciated.

Thanks

Joe.

Great Thank You. So, any particular brand and weight you would recommend?

It's a preference thing. I personally use Amsoil mixed with Redline Shock Proof.

So I think I'm going to get 3 quarts of Redline MT-90 Manual Transmission Fluid 75w90 and 2 quarts of Redline 75W110 GL-5 Gear Oil. What kind of luck has anyone had with these? Are these sufficient?

Did you read the thread I linked? Research, where I already tried to help you out with a start. People don't really like spoon feeding people information when it can easily be searched. Start with the link below.

Just run whatever your auto parts store has on sale. I use Valvoline cheap 75-90 crap and it handles 450awhp no problems. Rear end and trans, works just fine.

If you live where it gets cold I'd avoid the redline, I ran it for 30k miles and I found it was very notching and hard to shift when it was cold. I've found Fuchs Titan Sintofluid 75w80 works best for me.

Rear diff doesnt care as long as its 75w90 syn GL5

Okay great, it seems like that's the best stuff, but the trans has to be GL4 right? It looks like the Titan 75w80 is GL5. Am I wrong or is there a similar GL4 version of the Fuchs? I found the Titan Sintofluid 75w90 GL5 for the diff, just trying to get the right one for the trans. Is it ok to use the 75w80 GL5 in the trans?

No. There is brass material in the transmission that does not cope well with GL5 rated fluid. Many fluids today are both gl4 and gl5 compratiant. If you think it safer where you won't get confused, maybe pick up a fluid red for both so you don't mess anything up?
