if you want a fast audi, hands down the B5 S4!!

Either would be a great choice. B5 S4 can be made fast for cheap, just a chip and it's got tons of power. The B6 A4 has the warranty, and with the new GTRS out with REVO programming, that thing will beat e46 M3's.

I'd hit the S4 and chip it. It's a sweet car, the B5 is still damn sweet and it's got balls.

S4 and start saving for that crazy stage 3 kit from awe-tuning, 525hp on racing gas.

if speed is your main priority, then definetly the S4. A chip, coilovers and exhaust is all that car needs. But considering the gas prices, newer styling, and the potential power of the newer 1.8ts, i'd probably just end up getting the B6 with a 6-spd.

ya, insurance a bit more with an s4, but i might get the s4, is maintance that much on the s4, more pricey then the a4?

02 A4 1.8.

if you're asking you should consider the newer/cheaper/warrantied choice

02 A4's are not expensive. Probably the same if not cheaper than an 01 S4..in cost and in maintenance.

I agree. Get the b6. It will have less miles, and cost you less.

i been askin myself this EXACT question recently. The B6 is definately built better, in terms of build quality....basically bc its new. After driving both im seeing the B5's shortcomings. If your all about speed get the S4, if you wanna cruise and get a little more refined, while still being able to mod as you please, B6 it, but it will be slower...this is all my own opinion.

i beg to differ [:)] my S4 has 11000 miles

why doesnt he buy my car hehe i am local and my A4 will beat any S4 short of a stage 3 S4 hehehehehe which is why my S is goin S3 when i sell the A4 it sucks having an S4 that is ALOT slower then my A4.

I'd get the S4 if you can find one with less than 50k miles for a good price. Might even be able to find a certified preowned one. I wish I would have ponied up the extra $5k for an S4 when I bought my car...oh well.

For the money spent on Mods to a b6, your basically modifying it to get to the speed of an S4. And at the same time the S4 was actually engineered to that speed and spec. While you can still mod the b6 I think you start to push it further than what was intended for it and could cause more problems down the line. And with that being said an equally modded S4 would seemingly be faster still than a modded a4.I'm not claiming to be a gear head but that just seems like plain logic. Its just got a bigger heart no matter what, when an equal amount of things go into both the S4 will still be faster.

For me, the S4 hands down. Screw the maintainence, I'll fix it myself.

For others that lack the garage/tools/experience, B6 A4 with a warranty.

See when people hear "S4" they think of the fastest S4 they know of, but how much money do you plan to put into this car to make it really fast plus maintenance? I think most like the S4 because if the coll factor that comes with saying you drive an S. But in reality, it comes down to your pocket and how much you want the car.

I asked myself the same question a couple of months ago.
I thought that I would have to put alot of money into an a4 to make it as fast and as good looking as an s4.

The s4 costs alot to maintain but for looks and peformance it's good stock but of course, chip and suspension makes it even better.

ICEBIRGSLIM

Thats the thing also....you don't neccesarily need to go out and do every mod you can think of for the S4....chip, intake, exhaust, supension.......oh yeah can't forget some bad ass wheels!!!

Good to go!

i have got about 12000 in mods in my A4... and lots of custom shit. it takes alot to pass up the S. And when I go stg3 with my S it will be faster, mind you it wont be cheap.

either one is a great choice!

ask yourself what car you want to own... how much modding/type of modding you want to do to your car... how much hp you're looking for.

the S4 has so much potential.. with the K04's or even the upcoming Garrett options from ATP, it's going to become the new supra (with 4 doors)...

whereas the A4 1.8T with a Garrett turbo can keep up/beat most decently modded S4's... and for most people, that's plenty.

hmmm... i'm thinking the same thing..

i might sell my 04.5 ultrasport and buy a 01+ nogaro b5 s4 or perhaps a dakar yellow e36 m3... I really like STi's, but I don't like the IMAGE(boy racer), that goes hand in hand with them... i'm not sure... what do you peoples think?

I'm in the same boat right now and I've decided that B6 1.8t is the way to go.

i like the evo for the track... but not for everyday (i agree with your above statement)..

the b5 s4 is such a nice combination of both worlds, though.

sure.. it'll be more expensive to keep up.. so it's not a good car if you're planning on having cheap ownership (hence your first car out of college). then, the a4 is a smarter choice overall. the twin turbo beast definitely a specialty car for those with a bit deeper pockets.. so that you can just drop it off at a shop like us and get it all taken care of by cert. audi techs (unless you know how to do it all yourself, of course).

because of all the problems with that engine. Hang around the B5 S4 forum and you'll quickly learn why.

i'm currently in this dilemna especially if the person that comes to see my car this week actually buys it. i'm currently leaning towards getting a b6 a4 because of the warranty, low maintenance, and it's cheap. I've found a few b6 avants for $20,000 with less than 50,000 miles. all the s4's i've found around me are around 50,000 miles and everyone is still asking $25000. if/when i get the b6 a4, i'm definately going to get the atp gtrs or gt2871r eliminator with revo software. that'll feed my need for speed. also, another reasoning for me getting the b6 a4 instead of a b5 s4 is that i already have a b5...why not get a bt and i'd be happy right? but the b5 a4 isn't worth as much anymore especially because i have 130k miles and i love the new b6 body style.

Good luck with your choice. I don't think B5 S4's are selling at 25K however. I have seen them around 18K which is resonable for stock.

if you want top notch condition and low miles expect to pay 25-30k. cars with high mileage and a long laundry list of maintenance are going to go for under 20k
