View Full Version : High speeds = car shuts off?

I had the chance one late night to 'mash the pedal' on a nearby highway. It was extremely late, and the stretch of road was going on a downhill slope, with a good 4 miles of road visible in front of me.

I managed to get the car up to 130, and when i clutched out of gear to coast safely back to regular speeds (and save my brakes!) the car showed the battery light come on, and my steering wheel stiffened.

I reacted quickly and started the car back up and all was fine. Any ideas as to what is failing? Battery? Ignition? Coil packs?

This happened again tonite, when I tested out said problem again.

FYI, I am a 01 1.8TQM with APR chip/Bailey's DV. Everything else is stock.

sounds like egr not plumbed back into the intake. it's likely one of your recirculating hoses. Check em

btw it shouldn't have anything to do w/ high vehicle speeds. Try revving up in 2nd gear and pushing the clutch in. It should die falling past idle the same as in 5th. As you might have guessed, it's an idle control issue and we all know where those come from. *vacuum lines*

next time that happens just put the car back into gear and let the clutch out, it will restart

You can go ahead and do that on your car at 130... [rolleyes]

If you wanna slow down without using brakes, you can just leave it in gear... that way you save brakes, gas, and slow down faster.

It's like "M" mode for bimmers, race style steering feedback at autobahn speeds [:p]

bet it would be nice and tight. dont really need power steering that fast.

It kind of surprised me when it happened, wasnt too horrible. But I have no idea why it would even do that, no car Ive ever owned has turned off when I clutch out at a higher speed.

Sounds like something with the resirc/bov...

My friends all have very high horsepower 300zx's and their blow offs make the car do that. So they switched back to the resirc. When you floor the car and press the clutch back in to put the car in neutral and then let off the clutch the car stalls and you have to turn it back on asaps. There was nothing wrong with there cars its just what happens. There was a reasoning for it, something to do with fuel and such but it was such a long time ago that i forgot. The only reason i knew about it is because i was able to drive my buddies z with 700 wheel horse and when i mashed on it in third gear, i got scared and put the car in neutral while going up a hill and it stalled so i freaked out. hehe i know better now. I have pics and videos of this z if anyone is interested in seeing it.

Ummm, no.... The car does not SHUT OFF.... It will slow it down a bit and then continue... Do you really think that is safe for Audi to do that? [rolleyes]

yeah.......if you feel like dying. [rolleyes]

stiffening of the stearing wheel isnt that big of a deal at 130mph. there is no need for power steering at high speeds. stearing would only be a problem if you took the key out. (potential for stearing wheels locking up).....my only issue with the car turning off at that speed would be not being able to use the power brakes.
