I have a 99.5 1.8t Quattro Tiptronic A4
I have gotten terrible rod knock and metal in the pan so looking to just replace the block.

What block codes are directly interchangeable and from what model were they in?

I believe I've read before it needs to be another Tiptronic engine?

If I'm not mistaken the crank in some is different between manual and automatic.

That's about All the knowledge I have on the topic, which is going to make finding a donor engine more challenging.

I believe the aeb shared 2 different blocks, not sure if it makes a difference which is used and if there identical between passat and a4

But i know I have no intentions of swapping to DBW or the in oil pan oil temp sensor.

But I Will be doing rewiring for 2.0t coils

I'm 06a block. But from my understanding any 058 block will work for you. The difference in the cranks is that the manual ones have a place for the pilot bearing to go into. The autos do not. Also, I know all transverse 06a block, weather auto or manual have privisioms for the pilot bearing. I don't know about the 058 blocks. You having an auto helps you out bc both will work for you.

there are not 2 different AEB blocks, they are all the same, aside from the crankshaft snout being different from manual to auto. for you, i believe a manual engine would work in the auto car without modification if neccessary.
the AEB are all the same between the A4 and passat.

Awesome, so it's 06a or 058
And finding an 06a or a manual engine of either will make a manual swap possible down the lines

Can anyone tell me what transmission I might have and might be able to interchange when? Just another Tiptronic for now. It's been slipping

You can't use an 06a. Sorry if I was confusin you. They are different blocks. You will need an 058 block. Either auto or manual. That won't matter.

058 is better anyway. It has an external water pump driven by a belt off the crank pulley. 06A is internal and driven by the timing belt. A friend has an 06A and had a bearing failure in his WP. Jumped timing and bent valves. That won't happen if your 058 WP fails.

So to clarify: All pre dbw passat and a4's shared the same aeb head and 058 block?

Any aeb head is an aeb head. Doesn't matter what car it came from.

058's have their advantages, as do 06a. It really matters what your trying to do.

Bottom ends are not interchange able. So you have an AEB you need an AEB (058) block. AWM is 06a. Now the interchangeable parts are the head. You can put an AEB head on both blocks. So for your auto u need any 058 block
