I wouldn't recommend snow tires in rain. The suck pretty much.

so are winter tyres only really good in snow?

at the moment its freezing and the roads are very cold, sometimes we have rain, other times just ice.

am i better sticking with summer tyres?

seems to have very little grip at the mo.

I've got the Avon Tech M550 on my car. They held the road quite nicely today. We got about 10" of fresh snow last night.

My wife has the Continental ContiExtremeContact on her Subaru and those are great in the snow too.

Yes ContiExtreme is great snow tire

I'm running a 17" Pirelli 225/45 PZero nero M&S, seem to cut through water like butter. Can't wait to take them up in to the snow. I would recomend a snowrated tire like an M&S rating. My 2cents

true winter tires are softer and provide more dry and wet grip at colder temperatures. Keep in mind any sort of highway driving will generally bring most tires up to temperature rather quickly. Now if you encounter ice situations a winter tire specifically designed for ice traction is a definite plus. Any other tire is pretty much useless.
