I came across a local ad for a 2001 A4 1.8T Qauttro Manual with 230k miles(Clean Title in hand), it has a blown Head Gasket hence the mixture of Oil and Coolant and they are asking for $600. Would this be worth it as a Project Car...i don't have the intention of tuning the heck out of it or building into race car.

I don't really have good pictures of the car beside what the sellers has provided but i will go and check out hopefully this weekend.

Lol, just saw this yesterday. If you can do the work, why not? It's $600 and a couple hours

If the exterior is good, and the interior, and you get possibly the ugliest wheels ever made off of there and replace with something else, that is maybe a $2000 car fixed and working. You decide if it is worth it. Would definitely be worth it if you are not trying to make money on it though. If you just want to drive it, hell I'd buy it. Can always use another b5

I'd say absoloutely. Above poster is 100% correct in that you'll get it going for pretty cheap, but you'll be a bit more into it once you take care of all maintenance and turn it into a car thats enjoyable to drive.

Good thing I only have room for 2 cars, otherwise I'd have about 6 of these by now >.>

I have pretty much replaced everything on a4 B7, starting with cam follower, turbo, camshafts lobes and all the way to the Oil pump/balance shaft so this shouldn't be too much of problem for me.

Thanks

The wheels are damn ugly, definitely not planning to make any money out of it strictly personal use.

For personal use, bring 4 $100 bills, throw them in seller's face, and drive away with middle finger in the air. If the car works or whatever.

Got lucky on my DD. Paid $1000 for my 2000 1.8tqms Avant. 209k miles when I bought it. If you dont mind the high miles, totally buy it. Mine had a ton of maintenance done on it, so nothing is really going wrong. My S4 on the other hand, had 198k when I bought it and something breaks every week.

But for $600 you literally cannot lose. A partout would easily recover that investment

Seller stated that he bought it to work on it but fell short on money, he has no maintenance records but the car starts and drives but there is oil in the Coolant.

Oil cooler, easy fix $40 fix. Head gaskets dont go out on these cars. B6's yes, B5's no.

Wifey got a job, and I'm in need of another vehicle because I'm tired of having to adjust the god damn seat everyday[headbang] (my a6 had memory seats but the current a4 doesn't), but not good enough reason to justify buying an expensive car or new so then i thought i can buy something like this and have it up and running in no time.

I have been in the market for a new car but there aren't any decent looking cars like the B5s even though they are so old in age, unless of course you spend a ton of money and this could be just my personal taste but beside all this the expenses of owning a new vehicle its just not worth it. In SC where i live you've got to pay personal property taxes on your vehicle annually, different Counties have different % rate but the County i live in you've got to pay 6% of the value of your vehicle, so owning a new vehicle worth around $24k you been looking to pay around $520 in property taxes yearly.

So yeah..

$600 is cheap! I'd buy it.

I'd build the motor for my avant. And any parts that I may need for my car in the future. Good to have a parts car.

Also that interior would clean up real nice with a thorough vaccuming and steam cleaning!

Well, unfortunately when i called the seller Today so i can go and see the car, he told me he's in the process of notarizing the title for another individual[eek], that escalated pretty quick since when i talked to him last night around 10pm he did not mention of anyone interested on buying it...[rolleyes], he said he'll let me know Tomorrow if the other person changes their mind [poop].

Notarizing the title? Only needs his signature, bill of sale, exchange monies.

Maybe his name is not on the title?

Someone probly offered more than $600. It's definitely worth more than $600 for some people.

Found another one for $900, seller states that when he bought it with intention of fixing "it was smoking from burning oil, someone was working on it and the timing is off."

Emailed him couple days ago but no respond.

I paid $1000 for my avant that was sitting for two years and had a slipping clutch. Hugh miles, 209k, but a brand new oe cylinder head and tons of maintenance records. I removed the engine to replace the clutch and that looked great. Turns out all I had to di was put in a stock ecu and the clutch held. It now has 260k on it 1.5 years later.

Tough call without any pictures. Pics really say it all.

Which Engine? Trans? That would be a start. But for $400 there isnt much money to be lost if the car isnt salvageable.

My avant was sitting for two years. All it needed was brakes since the rotors were so rusted. I still run the same tires lol
