View Full Version : what would you do

I've got a 97 A4 1.8T quattro with 300k km, while doing an oil change yesterday I noticed the water pump leaking, along with ripped ball joint boots and my 2 month old axle with a blown boot. I fixed the boot but I'm torn if I should spend the money and do the whole timing belt/water pump or just replace the pump. The AEB kits are more expensive that the 06A kits I'm used to buying. Money isn't tight but I'd like to avoid a large expense right now.

Its an AEB engine so the water pump is external and my next timing service is at 340-350k km and come next service I'll just leave the pump as some cars the water pump alone lasts 300k km. When I bought the car it had just the water pump done at 200k so when I did the timing service at 230-240(don't remember) I just bought a kit with no water pump.

Theres an old saying I'll paraphrase: pay a little now, then alot later... or pay alot now then none later.

also if it aint broke don't fix it... so it depends. if the belt isn't due for a while and looks okay id probably just leave it for now.

might as well do the belt if you plan to keep the car for a while. waterpumps aren't very hard on aeb's so id do that regardless.
