my 97 came with a 6 disc... it plays cds really well, but struggles with cd-r's, is this something common that there is a fix for?

mine was the same way, its the style of reader.

you can get mine for cheap and see if it does any better.

clear cdr's sometimes dont read too well. try a brand which has an opaque label

Our changers weren't optimized for cd-r's.

is there any aftermarket changers that are compatible with the stock head unit?

my changer (with the round plug) couldn't read cdrs when I first got the car, then it started struggling with reg cd's, then finally it would'n't play shit. It's just a pos. nothing you can do about it but get a phatnoise like I did.

i've had problems with various cd-r blanks in drives of all types. the problem is usually related to color.

a few years ago i laid at least 100 music cd-rs out on the pool table. i flipped them all over and organized them by color. i had this huge trippy rainbow of circles. there were dozens of shades of blue and green, some gold and silver, very dark blue and purple, and even black. there were only a couple of discs labelled specifically as music cd-rs.

cd drives don't all use the same laser with the same wavelength of light. some color lasers just don't play well with some color discs. i don't know if there if a filter effect or what but they just don't work. some dvd players won't read some cdrs for the same reason.

i collected as many blank discs of diferent color as i could and tried them in the s4 (symphony 2), my jetta (sony), my pickup (denon), and on adcom, sony, denon, panasonic, and onkyo units. i also tried them in my ps2. i formed a matrix that showed what worked there but it has been lost.

pick a color that works in all of your players and stick with it. your computer should read all of them. you may have to dub some to new media.

*edit* i should mention that the audi symphony 2 in the s4 was the fussiest of the bunch. i didn't have my a4 then so the changer got left out of the little test.
