View Full Version : EPC Warning Light/Rough Engine

Hey all, was driving, then yellow EPC warning light popped up on the dash today, and 5 minutes later, engine was running really rough.

Drove that way for 20 minutes until I got it home and in the garage. Searched online, and got mostly coil pack failure. Maybe an injector.

It's a 2013 S4 with 16,100 miles on the clock. No engine tune. And, I'm just 2 months out of the 4 year factory warranty.

Any ideas on the best way to proceed? Obviously, get it to dealer service or an indy shop for evaluation.

Can it be driven as is, or does it need to be towed? I bought a third party Fidelity warranty, but thinking it might be better to
have the dealer fix it, cover the tow cost and loaner if needed, and push to have AOA pay for it, since it's only out of warranty 2 months.
I've read they might make an exception in this case. Any responses are appreciated. Thanks.

Unfortunately, I don't have that ability, but thanks for the reply.

It's time to get that ability, Carista, Vcds. You're out of warranty now so it's time to step it up, could save you quite a few bucks in the long run and do some nice tweaks too.

I have about 35k miles on my s5 and it happened to me about 5k miles ago. It would come on and off randomly at times (a lot if it started raining for some reason). Brought it to the dealer and it was just the sensor that needed to be replaced. So hopefully you're lucky and all you need is a sensor! Epc light makes the engine rough cause it is forced to go into safety mode so you loose a lot of the engines power

Couldn't agree more. You should spring for the tools that you need to take care of the car. Having to go to the dealership for everything is going to add up quickly. Alternatively, you might find someone in your area that has VAG and a weakness for craft brews. I'm jes sayin...

16k miles? Are you the original owner?

Thanks for all the replies... yes, original owner. Hopefully, it's just the sensor.
Sounds like it's ok to drive in safety mode. Just didn't want to cause any engine damage.

I had the same thing at an Audi track day the first month I had my car. The car went into "limp mode", where the EPC light is on and the engine is rough and power reduced. I let it sit for 20 minutes and restarted it and it ran fine. Dealership said it was an over-sensitive sensor.
