View Full Version : How long do you think our A4s can last?

Yes, I realize this is a stupid question, but I would like to hear the opinions of the mechanical gearheads in this forum.

I've read about tons of people with the OLD Audis (I think they're called 90), driving them to 240K miles and having relatively few problems. This is hard to believe considering the number of problems our B5s seem to have. Mine is running great now after numerous fixes, but I'm wondering whether it's even worth putting any money into mods if it's going to die on me in a couple years. I've read somewhere that our engines are relatively "bulletproof", but I don't know if this information is reliable.

I currently have 115K miles, and it is a 98.5 1.8T.

If my car will last to 200K, I will gladly give her a few new toys =P (like an S4 bumper, some nice new side skirts...)

If it is well looked after i do not see why it will not last till 200K.

yeah, i've been going through the same thought process with my 96 2.8 with 122k miles. i know the engine is good, and i take care of it, but realistically how long is this going to last? i'm into my 11th year of this car that tends to break down a lot. should i keep dropping hundreds into making it look better and drive better?
the answer is yes, of course. but i do wonder how much longer i've got until i'm listing all my mods individually in the zine's 'for sale' section...

i say it will last that long if not longer. Plus if you like your car so much, why not just throw another 2500 or so into it and replace the motor when it dies. THe b5 is a nice car and i would like to see it parked in my garage for a long time. I have 87000 on my clock however there is a new motor in there since 81000 so im good to prolly 300k on the clock. =)

it will last as long as i have money and they have parts...lol. im not gonna sell it after i finish it(BT, body, etc), so i can always replace the parts. i wouldnt let it fall tp pieces thats for sure.

Nismo, are the engines really only $2500?

a 1.8t jetta came it the shop the other day and it had close to 250k on the clock...
it depends a lot on whether you take good of the car and also how hard you drive it
i would also say that mods like K04 or T-28 tend to shorten the life of your block...
you know, some crappy cars last forever and some great cars die at 150k... it really depends

why a new motor at 81000??

anyway, you guys are right. even if i get another car, i'd like to keep this one. the "first love" factor haha ;)

(my first car, an 88 volvo station wagon, doesn't count...may she rest in peace)

lol, my first car was an 88 too. except i had a 88 VW scirocco 16v. it was actually pretty damn quick! not very friendly if i want to have passnegers in the back though. its a small car.

My first car was an 88. An 88 Suzuki Samuri. That damn thing would go anywhere. My cousin had a jeep that he put all this money into to go 4 wheeling and the damn thing couldn't make it up a small hill without sliding. He was pretty pissed when my lil samuri went right up with some street performance tires on it.

exactly! when my engine dies, I'll just have a built stroker waiting in the wings....or maybe I can convince bitterchild to help me out with a 20v 2.0L ABA hybrid. Heck, a 2.2L ABA stroker!!! ok wait, I don't have the $$ for that...[=(]

i'm guessing our cars don't have as big rusting problems as bimmers do...otherwise, i'm with you guys. i'd be willing to replace stuff under the hood.

Over on AW, there was an Audi service guy that said someone brought in an A4 with over 400k on it, so who knows

ive got 155kms on my car and did a compression check this weekend and it went to 160 on all cyl and stayed there. seems its in great shape. I think i'll keep her until she blows. Ive never loved a car so much as this one and dont see me getting rid of it anytime soon. unless a stage 3 s4 comes along for dirt cheap. not likely.

I have 130k right now. I just did TB and I plan on doing it twice more. I'll keep it until the body rusts out. It was stock till 125k, but now parts are getting old and as they die they get replaced with performance parts. Hell if I can get another 3-4 years out of this car I'll do a total engine swap too!

Euro.... engines for our cars a super hard to find however if you buy one from the dealer thats a remanufacture and you know someone who owns a mechanic shop, you can use thier discount. I knew someone and got the motor from like 3000 to roughly 2600. You can find used ones for cheeaper but i didnt want to buy a car that might have potential sludge issues again like the motor that went bad on my car.

I have 143,000 on my 96 2.8 5spd...original clutch going strong...the previous owner did control arms and timing belt, so I guess I am in it for oil changes and reg. maint. I just did a wheel bearing and I have to do brake pads soon, but nothing major...I hope :)

yeah i know someone at a shop. problem is that i dont even want to know how much the stealership would charge. for what they would want i could probably buy another B5....lol. thinking about what they would charge is giving my goose bumps[down] [:(]

B5's are getting cheaper and cheaper. . .A new engine will still be worth it though.

i've been thinking about buying a used engine and building it up for a while now. somehow though, it just doesn't seem right. i didn't even start autocrossing the jetta until over a quarter million miles had passed. the clutch lasted more than 275k miles.
the S4 avant has just over 160k miles now. not bad for an 01.

right after an autox at 268k miles.
