View Full Version : Blown Transmission Question

Back in July I bought a 2001 A4 Quattro (1.8T) with 111,000 miles. Everything on the car was in good shape except for the transmission. My mech told me that the torque converter wasn't in the best shape, so when I would put it in reverse it would take a few seconds to "jerk" into gear. I figured I would just take it easy on reverse and always give it some time to engage.

The transmission in this car is an automatic with tip-tronic as well. I really enjoy driving in tip-tronic. I wouldn't beat on it however, and always made sure to shift around 4-5 grand. I also downshifted when slowing down and took my foot off of the gas when shifting. Pretty much drove it like a manual. Probably wasn't the greatest idea.

2 Weeks ago I was driving up a steep hill, and the driver in front of me slowed down drastically. All I did was let my foot off of the gas (without shifting) and got back on the gas about 2 seconds later. When I did, I felt something bump and then lost all power as if I was in neutral.

I put it in the lowest gear (second) and stayed under 2.5 grand and managed to limp it home doing 20 mph in a 35 (lol). At first I thought the tranny fluid was low or needed to be changed, but when I took it to my shop, I found that the trans fluid was pitch black with shavings in it. Looks like I blew the clutch plate or something.

Long story short, I got a used transmission from a junkyard and will finish changing them out this weekend.

My main concern is if the trans went because of using tip, or possibly the way I used it, or if it was probably in bad shape when I bought it and it just decided to give-out. I know that tip is okay to use but was it perhaps that I let-off the gas while shifting or because of downshifting to slow-down (which I never did over 3,000 RPMs).

Please enlighten me so that I don't have the same problem in 20,000 miles.

All I can say is that, my B6 anyway, is an automatic driven in manual mode 95% of the time, has 251K km's on it, has had one transmission filter and oil change (>200K), seems fine. I use it to engine brake as well, I don't let off the gas upshifting. My experience.

I have noticed that it shifts easier when i don't let off the gas that might have been the problem. And the trans was already in bad shape.
This new trans only has 70k on it so I'll take it easy on her.
