I have a 98 a4 with a blown motor. Just recently purchased an a6 with the 4.2. now the delima I'm in is that I was told that it was a 2000. If you look at the sticker by the door manufacturing date is 11/00. Now that title says that it's a 2001. I don't know if it has the immobiliser or not. If so what do i have to do to bypass so I can get the motor to work? If anyone can lend a helping thought would be great

It most likely does have immo. Get it defeated and you're golden

Ok what do I have to do to wiring up to my body harness to the motor. And what's the best way to defeat it also flash the ecu for a manual. Will I need to run with the a6 gauges?

I can do wiring. Not my strong point. Just got my first Audi last December. Use to older muscle cars. " Alot easier lol". The mechanical side and fabrication are my strong point. Thanks for the help BTW.

Have an 02 a6 4.2 fully loaded if anybody wants it tuns & drives. Perfect for swap

A user here named bhusted did the same swap into a 99.5 and documented everything, look for his thread on it. The most difficult part is figuring out what wire goes where, after that it's a piece of cake.

Tddybrwn269
09-26-2016, 06:17 PM
I'll look for his thread thanks. Yeah everything is a breeze for me except figuring out what wires go where lol. Can the ecu be flashed for a manual transmission. Is so where and how much lol

Tddybrwn269

Does anyone know if a s6 ecu will work with my harness? Found out that my a6 donner car was manufactured 11/00. But says it's a 2001 on title. However I was looking at the key and it doesn't seem to have a transponder. Does that mean no immobiliser?

Tddybrwn269
09-27-2016, 06:24 PM
I've also noticed that on a couple threads that the flywheel don't match up to the crank sensor. What's that fix?

T.Hell
09-28-2016, 10:40 PM
Pretty sure that there is an immobiliser. Only difference might be that the older is immo2 and newer immo3.

You don't have to get that manual flash right away. Just add the pin for the clutch and it works fine. I've been driving almost 4000km with my V8 swapped B5 like that, and there is nothing that tells me it's an automatic ecu.

And reading those other 40V V8 swap threads really helped me a lot.

Tddybrwn269
09-29-2016, 03:27 AM
Oh ok well then I still got to get past the immobiliser in the ecu. Yeah I've been reading alot of the v8 threads. Been really helpful so far. Haven't started yet, waiting for the new clutch, radiator, and all the seals and stuff to come in. Just trying to get all my ducks in a row if you know what I mean.

you will need to convert your car to DBW, get a V6 30v flywheel if you plan to stay 5 speed, 6 speed you will need s4 flywheel. There will probably be more wiring needed to be done on body harness side since yours is preface lift, the ideal way

is to swap same year to same year- ie 01 a4 with 01 v8, makes things a lot easier, you will need 1.8t power steering pump.

Message me if you have any questions. Immob and manual coding will need to be done on ECU, i have been running Daz tune and its amazing, unfortunately with his passing it would be hard to get.

Nollywood

The V6 30V flywheel also works with an 01E 6-speed, and is actually preferable to the insanely heavy and tall 2.7T flywheel, which requires the 2.7T / 01E 11.5mm spacer, between the engine and transmission.

With limited room at the front of the V8 in a B5, you need every mm you can salvage.

I understand the same years would be ideal. However there isn't much to choose from up here. Details about what to do for the wiring would be nice. Plan on taking pedals out of the 01 just need to learn what or where the wires go. Where could I send my ecu to get what's needed done to it? Should I egr and Sai delete? As you can tell new to the forum so would send pics but can't figure out how to yet.

You can use the 4.2 pump. But you have to also use hoses from 4.2 (that is how I did it. It helps a lot if you have the whole donor car.

I do have the whole donner car. Plan to start on it this weekend. Seals and stuff will start to come in next week. I know I have work ahead of me with the wiring. If someone could point me in the right direction. It's a pre facelift b5 and a 01 a6

my motor is 00, harness and ecu are 01 i bought from a yard. wiring info is hard to find, best to research all the builds on here as wiring is different for every year/combination. pedals shouldn't matter as long as its from facelift. your essentially adding a plug into plenum box where you dont have one. message me for ECU info, i may have someone who can get a a delete and tune

definitely delete SAI, i made my own blockoff plates, or get them from 034.

i ran 40v PS pump with 1.8t pressure line and 40v reservoir to pump line, i said it wrong in previous post. its plug and play this way.

If your not the best with German wiring i would try to source a facelift car and there isnt nearly the wiring work needed. you will want to go facelift cluster which is a lot of wiring and then deal with re pinning the plenum plugs as well, just my $.02

Lol can't post pics. And the wiring doesn't bother me. But the knowledge of where it goes is lacking. Or having the wiring schematics. That's where I lack. The work I can do the know how I can't. Lmao. Not afraid to admit it.

You mentioned model years not matching but keep in mind that Audi model years go from August of one year to July of the next. So a car with a build date of 08/2000 or 07/2001 are both 2001 model year cars. That being said a car with a 11/2000 build date is a 2001 model year car.

Thank you on the tach. And for the wiring yeah I get only three wires but I'm working with a 01 harness and 98 body. The plugs are different. The pins for the body are round and the pins for the engine harness are flat. don't know if I should just cut wires and change the whole end or what. And of course the color of the wires do not match.

Tiddy, you need the wiring diagram for both the '97 A4 2.8 30V, as well as the 2001 ME7.1.1 4.2 V8 40V.

Forget about matching up wiring colors, that's one way to fry your ECU, or burn your car down. I always match wires by function, which is the best way to go.

Yes, you'll need to splice the connectors.

Yes Nollywood that is exactly what I wanted to do. Wasn't going to match the color because I know that the functions are different. It's just finding the pin outs for the body plugs and what they do is what I'm having trouble with. I have schematics for both engine wiring harnesses. However the ones I got are for the components of the engine and ECU. Nothing beyond that. Unless it does go further and I just can't figure it out. Once I figure it all out and get it wired up. My plan is to make a spreadsheet of the colored plugs and what wires get spliced to which wires. So in the future I may be able to pass on the knowledge and help someone else out. Who chooses to v8 swap a pre-facelift. Just to make it even easier for them.

Did you figure this one out?

If its anything like the V6, its the number of links that counts. The position of the timing mark on the intake cam is dependent on what position the CCT happens to be in. Line the mark on the exhaust cam up, count your links and you should be good to go. The intake mark will be close but might not exactly line up.

Yeah I got them figured out. 16 links. I knew the v6 was 16 links. Nollywood assisted in determining it was definitely 16 links. So thanks AGAIN Nollywood for all your help.

Nice progress so far. I actually found an S6 4.2 that I am considering buying. But I would be swapping it into a prefacelift 1.8t b5 (I would just find a facelift, but Im not going to find another cactus avant anytime soon) so any info regarding wiring or anything would be greatly appreciated!
As soon as I get it all straightened out and running correctly I'LL be glad help. As I work on the harness I'm actually writing down what I do. So when I get it all done. Hopefully I would be able to assist any other pre-facelift buddy.

Well I'm getting there. Does anyone know how to hook up the data link wires. The 98 2.8 harness has to wire for the datalink and a third wire that runs to the malfunction indicator in the cluster. However I can only find one wire on the 2001 4.2 harness that runs to the malfunction indicator in the cluster and looks like it splices off and goes to the datalink as well.

Ok well making progress. I've got wiring all done except for a couple wires. I went to add the diode for the emobilizer. Does anyone know which pin on the ecu? I was told that it's pin 21 but my schematic shows that pin 21 is for a clutch switch.

I have a question for anybody lol. How do the vacuum line get ran so that the intake flaps work properly? Oh and when it comes to the clutch switch would the break light switch form the a6 work for the clutch as a closed switch? How exactly do you wire that up so that it works properly?

I must have did something right lol. I supplied pin 21 with a power source while key is on. One that doesn't lose power when cranking. With a small little 12v diode. I didn't have to trick anything else, for example the fuel pump relay. Turned the key and fired it up.

So can anyone steer me in the right direction. I seem to only be a to get one intake flap to work. It would be the diafram on the passenger side. So that's the top on. That is the only one that I can get to work. They are both free and not froze up. It's like the other one isn't get the vacuum. So only the one is actuating on start up and idle. They both should right?

C5 a6, but now that you mention it. It might have the s6 flash on the ecu. I would have to check. As for the cats. They are a high flow and rated for a 7.4 liter

The C5 A6 V8 has a 3-stage intake manifold, with 2 operating solenoids, one operating 2 stages, the other operating the 3rd stage independently.
The C5 S6 has a dual-stage intake manifold, with one operating solenoid, operating both stages via a Tee'd vacuum line.

A C5 S6-flashed ECU running a C5 A6 4.2 will have different intake manifold behaviour, unless a dual-stage intake from a C5 S6, or D3 A8 4.2 V8 is used.

To your answer, no.

The headlamp and horn wiring harness are independent of the engine harness, and don't connect to the body / chassis plugs under the ECU.

When you pull the stalk to flash, does the main Blue beam indicator in the cluster illuminate? When you switch on your side lamps, does the green indicator in the cluster illuminate?

Tddybrwn269
12-15-2016, 04:28 AM
Yes the high beam indicator illuminates and so does the green indicator. Acts just like when the switch was bad. I was just double checking, didn't think anything ran through the ECU. Just baffles me that the switch can go bad just sitting. Like I said they worked when the engine was pulled. I'll check out the switch I guess lol. Is there a way to hook up the headlights through a relay so that the switch will stop melting down?

I have a preface body and upgraded my center console to a double den setup. I had to install a new relay. I would check the relay, power source, and fuse. I referred to a makeshift diagram example from a link available on a center console thread for B5's.

no it just starts accelerating slowly around 5600 and completely stops accel and holds 6k, if i reset the code and drive i can go to 7k for a time or 2 until code comes back, also i have a Daz tune, so it may act different than stock would

Yeah I noticed the differences. You got that from Nollywood didn't you lol. I havent gotten a chance to take it out on the road yet. I noticed that my brake reservoir was dry rotted and leaking so waiting for that to get here. If I crack the throttle just sitting there it will bounce the rev limiter. That's why I asked if yours did? I know that the vss also runs through the cruise and what not.

the wiring diagram i found doesn't show vss going through cruise, and that it is separate, but my cruise does not work either... so maybe there is something more there causing the issue

Yeah hmmm my cruise doesn't work either then again it never has since I got the car lol. I used the brake light switch from my old pedal as the clutch switch, does anyone know if that will work? I still have idle hang and the jumping revs. Could I have it wired backwards? Any input would be nice. Otherwise I pulled her out of the garage tonight.http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20161222/e6add4f3e219c8873e27411497b0bf0e.jpg

my stock switch worked fine on mine, i just had to do the wiring like in the breakout Motorsports write up. the only way to really tell is hook up VCDS and log it. it should be switching from 0 to 1, i cannot remember if 1 is off and 0 is on or opposite, but i think it was on the write up. mine was working exactly as it should and i didn't have to chance any thing.

Another thing, do you have a tune? if not and ecu still thinks it an auto, you will always have rev hang and weird idle

my stock switch worked fine on mine, i just had to do the wiring like in the breakout Motorsports write up. the only way to really tell is hook up VCDS and log it. it should be switching from 0 to 1, i cannot remember if 1 is off and 0 is on or opposite, but i think it was on the write up. mine was working exactly as it should and i didn't have to chance any thing.

Another thing, do you have a tune? if not and ecu still thinks it an auto, you will always have rev hang and weird idle
Well I'm supposed to have a tune. I sent the ecu out to get that taken care of. However in that department I have no strengths lol. Yeah on the VCDS trying to find someone who has that capability. My original switch was the vacuum switch, was told that it wouldn't work. Something about an open circuit and it needs to be a closed circuit or vice versa. Like any other projects there are bugs to work out. Remember I'm in a 98 pre-facelift so I had to do a bunch of rewiring. Got all winter to exterminate the bugs. It's actually a little hard to drive it lol wants to break traction through third gear shifting to second lol. To much snow up here at the moment as the rods are covered. Lmao however it helps me to stay calm to break in the clutch

OK so I can't communicate with my ECU. Does anybody know exactly how to hook up the data link wires so that it will communicate?

Haven't posted in awhile. Well car is running. Just had to tear down last week. To change the alternator that decided to quit on my way to work. Weird thing though. After changing the alternator I've noticed that all my dummy lights flicker on and off now. Can't figure that one out? Scratch head. Oh picked up another a6. This one is the 2.7 TT. So I'll be putting that in the wide body. Came with a spare engine already most of the way built. Couldn't pass it up $550. Does anyone know if the 2.7 and the 4.2 have the same gear ratios?
