I am thinking about pulling the trigger on a CPO 2014 A6 3.0T. I previously looked at A6s, but my wife convinced me that a Q5 was a better option because of the additional room. We ended up buying a 2016 Q5 3.0T, but I'm not happy with it. I am weighing the pros and cons for getting an A6. For those with families and kids, how has the A6 been? Do you have enough room? Does the car seat fit well? I tried it out a few weeks ago and it seemed okay. I'm guessing there's only room for 2 in the back like the Q5. Any regrets?

Thanks!

My A7 had more space than the Porsche Macan I had after it (the Macan is same size as the Q5). My current S6 has more space in the back seats and probably about the same space in the trunk (the trunk is shorter than the Q5's, but deeper).

Pulling up the actual numbers:

S6 Trunk: 14.1cft
Porsche Macan Trunk: 17.7cft
A7 Trunk: 24.5cft

I couldn't get any comparable for the back seat, but my 2 car seats allow someone small to sit in the middle seat in the S6. There was no space in the Macan. The leg room for the back passengers is also a lot bigger in my S6 vs. the Macan.

Hope that helps..

I fit my car seat in the back every now and then. Plenty of room for me.

The A6 has been fine for my family. Granted that we have a Q7 for most of the family outings, we do occasional take the A6. I am 6'1" and have two car seats that fit just fine in the back. A small person can and have sat in the middle. They were slightly cramped, but not uncomfortable. I think it is plenty of room which is why I like it. I do wish Audi would bring over the newer A6 Avant for a bit more utility, but that is not likely to happen anytime soon.

We have both a q5 and s6. The backseat being a little bigger in the 6 leaves slightly more room upfront once a car seat is put in. We have a Nuna Pipa on the passenger side and the front seat is scooted up, but still can fit someone under 6' for a short ride. Putting it in the center seat would help with front leg room, but it depends if your other half wants to sit in the back, which is snug with center mount. Of your kids are in front facing seats, this won't be as big a concern.

With a stroller, the trunk of the 6 is also deeper and can accommodate more items. Of course if the cover is off the q5 it is taller and can hold more. The 6 has been great so far, but we are actually considering a larger SUV to replace the q5.

Hope that helps.

Btw, why can't manufacturers put latches in the middle!?!

Btw, why can't manufacturers put latches in the middle!?!

They can, but the middle seat has to be in a certain width. In our old-gen Q7 the middle had no latch point, so we used one from each side, but in our new-gen Q7 there are a set of latch points for both sides and the middle, because the middle seat was wider than the previous gen.

I use mine as a family car. During the week I'm primarily the only occupant. On the weekends I've got the old lady and a fourth and fifth grader in the back. You get height with the Q5, but as far as I can tell, you do not get a significant increase in overall space, if any, in the Q5. Of course, with the rear seats folded down, the Q5 wins for cargo room, but with the rear seats up you give up depth and only gain height. I tried to get the old lady to buy a SQ5 and she took one look at the cargo area and concluded she gained nothing other than ride height in buying that model. She thinks for family movements, with lots of cargo, the Q7 is the better fit - otherwise, we all pile into the S6.

My S6 had more interior room than my wife's SQ5 and it's more comfortable for long trips, it's basically a luxury cruiser.

My wife has a q5 and we enjoy the s6 more for family road trips. Only certain types of cargo would deem the q5 to have more "trunk" space but 90% of the time the s6 trunk is just fine

The s6 is just more roomy, I think it is a width difference, just better elbow and knee room. Always more comfy.

And I had an a6 prior to the s6 and all the same applies, a6 will get better gas mileage as well

After living with the q5 for two years now, wish we had gotten the q7

I got 3 kids, 3 month old, 4 and 9. And they are well seated in the back when we go to the summer house at 1h30 minutes. No problem what so ever.

This summer I was looking at the Q7 in a audi dealership and the seller ask me why I needed 7 seat, when I explained it to him he showed me the size of the A6. Later on the day I came back with my wife and my 3 kids, we did a little test drive and we were all good and well seated. The truck is big enought to put the stroller, 2 luggage and all the necessary for the baby. This summer we went to Toronto, 6 hours from where I live in montreal and its was just a great road trip.

Btw I made 8L/ 100km from montreal to Toronto 🖒.

I have a 2014 A6 (TDI) before purchasing it I looked at the Q5 and it really didn’t seem to have enough room. I would guess the Q5 was similar platform to the A4, both were too small for me. (also looked at BWM 3 and 5 series sedans)

I have a front facing car seat behind driver with no space issues. (I am 6.2, 230lbs) so this is impressive space. My test for space is to adjust the driver’s seat to where I am comfortable, then get out and hop behind and see if I can fit there too.

Using this method I have plenty of room to put the car seat behind me. Also, I can easily fit 3 full-size adults in the back.(without the car seat!)

The trunk has tons of room for all of our luggage when we do go away, but my kid is now in an umbrella stroller, so if we still had to use a full size stroller it would probably be a challenge with the luggage for a 7-10 day vacation.

Monday-Friday its generally just me commuting, but on the weekends and vacations when it’s the whole family the WIFI is a huge hit to it keep the kids (and wife) entertained.

The 6 has been a great choice for me when needing more room for 2 kids (3.5 and 2 weeks), both seats fit great without compromising front seat room to a significant extent, still having some room in the back seat for stuff and having a rather large trunk. If I need even more space for some reason, I can throw on my bars/box.

We went XC90 over Q7 for my wife's car (which gets most of the full family duties) and are very happy about that decision. Anyone looking for something that size and in this category would do themselves a disservice not to take a hard look at what Volvo is putting out.

Pics of new xc90 I think it looks fantastic in person! They did a great job revamping it! For sure! I'm trying to get my wife to look at it for her next car but she's stuck on a sedan from MB which she has now which I think is ok. But maybe I can get her to look at it.

I had a 2014 a6 prestige. Great car FAIR room but not great with two kids. Slightly tight with both car seats in the back and no height in trunk although deep. Long story car rear ended which allowed me to jump in to a 2016 A7 and it's fantastic! More space in rear and fantastic trunk space and height! It's a amazing mix for sportiness for me but family function when needed. I would certainly consider the 7 it's amazing.

We looked at the XC90 too, but settled on the Q7. We loved a lot of things about it, but my wife just could not get over the large "Tesla-like" screen, on top of a deal from my Audi dealer that only a fool would refuse.

We love the xc90. The revamp, including big ass screen, really is a game changer in the category. I nearly ordered a v90 but didn't want to wait (and the v60 polestars are neat but too small and dated tech compared to the new 90s).

Honestly A6 is not a good family car if you have at least 2 kids (7 and 16) like I do and pets. It is ok for short trips but I only use it as daily driver to and from work. I had also q 5 an was not a great car either. But I found the best solution for me. http://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20160917/1d9b310f749ffd5e7491e57e2fe6c62f.jpg

All in however comparing to Audi (fit and finish) it is like made in China Walmart toy (Toyota and Nissan are even worse)but it does the job. Whenever you go you take what you want even you will need it or not and what is the biggest plus you can fit 8.
Nothing can beat minivan.

My dilemma is that I don't like SUVs so that's why I want to get a car. We shopped around a lot before buying the Q5. We looked at both comparably sized and larger SUVs. We found the Q5 to be the best option. I was really pushing for an A6 then as well, but we decided on the Q5 because of the larger space.

I agree and think the A7 is the best of both worlds. However, I can't find a decently priced CPO A7 ($40k under). Sounds like an A6 is okay for day to day use. I was worried about travel, but we don't travel much and could always rent.

Edit: The XC90 is beautiful but was too large for my wife to drive when we were looking at SUVs. S6 is out due to cost as well.

A7 has a lower roof line and entry, main reason I went with the A6. I have 3 car seats in mine as I pick the kids up from daycare and make the 10 min drive home. Kids are 2, 5, and 7. I'm 6'3" for reference. We also have a 4Runner that we use for road trips, mostly for extra storage. That said the kids have plenty of room.

So take A6 than if You like it
I am not the right guy to give option because I love A6 and for me it is best looking car/sedan on the market.
But remember one thing
Always buy what you want. Do not think if something is too expensive because later on you will figure out that the $$$ difference between what you get and what you wanted is not that big and every day you will think about what you could get and why you didn't.

Picked up a 2013 A6 3.0t quattro for myself. Does mixed duty as my daily driver and occasional family hauler with two kids 8 + 10 in the back for vacation. They're comfy for a 3-4 hour drive. Huge trunk w/ fold-down seats. I can lay my assembled Cannondale mtb (sans front wheel) in the trunk on a mat , drive into work and bike commute the rest of the distance.
