I had a very annoying rattle coming from the top of the dash on the driver side. First trip to the dealer and they could not replicate the issue. The second time I brought the car in I had the Manager of service take a test drive. He identified the rattle in the heads up display. Went back to the service area and he found a known issue with the heads up display. Applied the fix and it is a lot better but certainly not perfect. It still makes a rattle about 10% of the time. Anyone else experience this one?

We also identified another "squeak" coming from the drivers seat. It was the seat belt rubbing against the leather......The fix was tot wrap the set belt buckle with cloth tape. A very low tech solution. I just find these issue really annoying in an $80k car and I never had any of these issues in the multiple BMW's I have owned.

Am I being too critical?

Ahhhh at last. I have the same problem with the rattle. I was wondering where it was coming from. I always thought it was from the glove box area and I would tap it to see if it made any difference but it never did. This is something I planned on having looked at during the 15k. What did they do to fix it exactly?

I have a 16' S6 as well.

I don't think you're being too critical at all. I expect the same I suppose.

Luckily I have never been bothered by rattles. I think the 1st time you discover a rattle .... then fix it .... you'll be looking for other rattles all the time.

That's just me.

...Am I being too critical?...CGM

IMO no for the HUD rattle, but the seatbelt against the leather - yeah, I'm gonna go with yes on that one. Someone larger or smaller than you might not have the same issue, so you can't really blame it on a design defect. To me, it's one of those things that you fix and move on....

Mark me down for the HUD rattle! Its weird it only happens on certain roads that make a certain vibration through the car. And If I stick my hand in the hud, sure enough the little plastic piece on the front side of the HUD is making the noise. Do you have a TSB # or anything for this fix?

Same HUD rattle issue and it is quite loud on certain road types. 2016 RS7 here.

I will try to find the TSB #. The mechanic said it was just announced at the end of July.

I had this TSB done a few months ago and it didn't fix the issue. Read the study guide and remembered a post about the tuning fork and turning off the soundaktor

A9 Structurally Borne Sound > > Adaptation > Default volume = 100% > set new value for % to desired value

Setting this to 0% made the rattle/tapping noise stop for me.

Have a 2013 with the head up display rattle. 1st attempt was to add a foam packer and reduced the problem but didnt fix it. 2nd fix was replace the HUD. Fixed. My rattle was most common on coarse sprayed seal roads.

My 16 passenger seat seat belt squeaks when engaged. Annoying. Spray silicone.

I also have the HUD rattle and it drives me nuts as I expect such an so naive car not to have rattles.

My last A8 had a soft material attached to the sides of the seat belt buckle receptors, so as not to wear away or scratch the leather on the side of the center console. This is where I am starting to discover the difference between a $105k car and my $80k S6. I also noticed that I can actually see the speakers etc in the rear parcel shelf from inside the trunk, whereas in the A8 the trunk was fully finished with interior lining materials top to bottom, side to side.
These are just two minor details but they show the total level of attention given to the flagship model. But then I fire up the TTV8 with the exhaust on Dynamic and I forget about the seat belt buckle and trunk finishes.

Just took my car in for service and they are ordering some kind of adhesive piece to perform the TSB for the rattle in the HUD.

I have the same HUD rattle. Next oil change I'll have them fix it. Mine too is only on certain road types as others have mentioned. Will respond with more info when fixed.

Please do. I have my first service due in about a month and would love to get my hud buzzing issue resolve. I can't make it buzz on demand so I'd love to have a TSB # or part fix # in hand so I don't get the " can't reproduce problem" run around.

I have the seat belt issue and I felt crazy for even noticing. It seems Audi uses the same techniques I use to fix things - tape.

The S6 is at the dealer now. They just called and said they heard the HUD rattle and acknowledged the bulletin for it (didn't tell me what the number was, but I didn't ask either). The are getting a special sealant part overnighted to them in the bulletin to take care of it. I'll post any other info I may get on the rattle when I pick it up (hopefully tomorrow).

Fantastic, nice to know there's an actual bulletin for this and not just a felt tape "wing it" fix.

Great.[rolleyes] Maybe I'll luck out and it'll get fixed. It only rattles on cold mornings so I guess it's a blessing that I live in S. FLA where it's hotter than stink most of the year. 92 degrees today and it's the end of October.

Ok, got the car back and seems like everyone has a portion of truth to this fix. I wanted to drive around for a day to make sure the issue was fixed. There is an official Audi part number: 171-863-147 which is indeed listed as "Felt Strip" https://www.genuineaudiparts.com/oem-parts/audi-felt-strip-171863147

There is also the official TSB associated with this as well: TSB 2029843\3 https://static.nhtsa.gov/odi/tsbs/2012/SB-10065378-2280.pdf

So, I'm assuming most of the price to fix this out of warranty would be the labor involved in adding the strip. Felt strip or not, I haven't' heard a peep out of the HUD since and am happy with the results. I've attached the portion of the receipt for the work done for reference. Hope this helps anyone who needs to go to the dealer with the HUD rattle.

Glad to help everyone out. It took a lot of digging to get the actual information and to this point. I suppose one could order the "official" felt strip themselves if they're out of warranty and wanna save some money, but I will caution this. If you look on the TSB on page three it warns this with a big yellow exclamation mark:

"Note: Use a high level of caution during steps 2 and 3 not to break the retaining clips when disengaging and when pulling the frame out. The clips are fragile, and the frame is not available as a service part. If
damaged, the complete Head Up Display must be replaced."

So if one attempts this themselves and breaks any of the 6 clips, the whole HUD will need to be replaced since you can't just order the bezel/frame. If the dealer breaks any clips, well, I would've had them pay for it.

LOL I saw that. Break a clip, buy a new hud. This is a dealer fix for me. Years ago I was fearless, not so much anymore. Especially when screw ups hit my wallet hard.

I had my S6 in for service and exhaust install. I had them fix my HUD rattle. I mentioned the TSB above but I believe that refers to 2012 only? They found and fixed it under a different TSB: 2044763. It's basically the same thing though. Audi drove it before and after, noting no rattle after the fix. I've taken it on the interstate a few times since and have not heard a rattle. Easy-peasy

I had all of this felt stuff done.... mine went away as the weather got cooler in TX but now it's back. It's the lens of the HUD vibrating....I can put my finger in the middle of it when it starts and it goes away. The Tech's at my dealership said they cannot do more than what Audi allows.....as we got back into the 80's, it's F'N BACK....sounds like a large Bee stuck in my dash. MUST find a solution......

I encountered this (rattle from HUD) when I first test drove the S6 back in the day prior to purchasing one. Was very annoying. Luckily my car had no such rattle as it would have done my head in (I can't stand rattles).

Mine rattles too. It's the plastic screen that rattles but pushing on it helps none. I have to squeeze the sides of the plastic holding it in then it temporarily shuts up for a bit.

I brought it back to dealer prior to warranty expiring for a re-fix and they (long story short, for this thread) reapplied more felt stripping. I've had it back on the interstate since and have only heard a slight rattle once over a big bump at high speed....it's not constant. I am not optimistic this is a long term fix (again).

Just thought I'd resurrect this thread. I complained to my Audi dealer about this on my 2016 RS7, I think three years ago and they said they couldn't duplicate it. Wish I knew about the TSB! I may try this fix later this summer. Thanks for all the helpful posts!

I chimed in last year but I'll provide an update.

I too had the felt strip applied as per the TSB. I don't think it has helped any to alleviate the vibration. As has been mentioned, it's not the housing that rattles but rather the screen inside it. It gets worse when temperatures fluctuate. For example, if the dash is cold with A/C running and shade from trees on back roads, then you get on to freeway in the blazing hot sun.

Most Audi stuff is quality but this is for shit. We have a HUD in our Palisade that gets driven way more, and it never rattles.

Add mine to the list of rattling. I have attempted to put some anti vibratory adhesive felt strips to it in an attempt to remedy the issue. It has not made much difference to my avail.

I find myself oftentimes reaching up and putting my finger on it to stop the noise. It is rather bothersome.

I dreaded this for my RS7 since I experienced it in my 16 S6, no rattles in the RS7 even after taking the dash out and putting it back in.

Doesn't sound like my HUD is as bad as some of you have experienced. Perhaps got lucky. I only get it over certain roads, generally grooved concrete. This is what the TSB alludes to. I will attempt the fix later this summer and see what happens.

Add me to the list. My '18 S6 has a rattle coming from the HUD unit. The noise goes away (or lessons significantly) when pressure is applied by hand to the reflective piece on the inside of the HUD housing. I was at the dealer for a major milestone service and mentioned the problem and that there was a TB for it. They performed the TB repair which (felt strips) and it did nothing. Had to bring the car back in for front brakes to be done the following week. Mentioned it again, and they said they went in and "foamed it" or something like that. Just got the car back yesterday and can already tell that it is still vibrating. It seems to be tied to the weather, as when it is hot or sunny outside the noise shows up. I have a video that I sent the dealer of me driving the car and the rattle / humming noise being very apparent and then going away once I apply pressure on a certain area of the reflective piece. I noticed in the dealers write up after their second attempt to fix it that they state "RF and LR rims are bent causing vibration at highway speeds." Don't know what to make of this as no one mentioned it to me and I would have never noticed this unless I read the dealer notes. I find it very hard to believe that my rims are causing this. It certainly is possible that my rims are not perfectly round driving on Michigan roads. Tires/rims have always balanced fine and I just had my summer set of rims/tires put on and there was no mention of there being an issue. Guess I'll take the rims to a rim repair specialist to have them checked and adjusted to round if they are out of tolerance.

Any thoughts or tips?

I have a 2016 A6 and I have a rattle too. Dealer performed the same repair they did on yours to my vehicle and it didn't go away. They also insulated the speaker cover on the dash thinking maybe that was where the noise was and the noise still hasn't gone away. Noise is not consistent and seems to happen only at highway speeds. I'm out of warranty now and basically just turn up my radio to drown out the rattle. If you ever get it fixed let me know. My rattle sounds like it is coming from the dash somewhere on the driver side.

I've been noticing a newer rattle and haven't been able to track it down yet. I bet this is what's rattling on my HUD! Thanks for the information everyone--I'll try to apply some pressure on my way home and see if it stops, then do the fix.

BUMP. My 2017 RS7 is doing this, super annoying. Still have some CPO warranty left, and extended after.

What’s the fix for this? Sound disappears if I push down in the clear HUD plastic.
