My last 2 fill ups produced my all-time-best tank average of 25.7 mpg (95% highway), followed immediately by my all-time-worst tank average of 15.7 mpg (100% city). Cylinder deactivation can't do much when you never exceed 60 mph for more than a few seconds at a time...
Overall average is 20.8 mpg, which is only about 0.2 mpg less than my previous 300+ lb. lighter, ~100-hp weaker B8 S4.
No, I didn't buy the car for MPG - just thought it was comical to go from best to worst in the space of 2 consecutive fill-ups...

I think my lifetime average is also around 20.X after 37k miles. I'm actually happy with the highway mileage this car returns.
For what it's worth, my Focus RS that weighs 700 pounds less and is only a 2.3L turbo 4 is averaging only 22.

The reality of physics: heavy vehicle + rapid acceleration = poor fuel mileage
My old B8 S4 stage 2 would get 28 mpg on a flat freeway at 70 mph with cruise control. In town, I typically got about 13 mpg, unless I drove gingerly to get 16 mpg.
Full on driving hard, it would go down to about 8.9mpg.

Cylinder deactivation doesn't just occur at speeds over 60MPH, it also occurs at normal traffic speeds when there is no significant load on the engine.
You need to have your DIS set up to show consumption to see when 4 cylinder mode is operating because you really can't tell.
I get about 20 around town and 28/29 on the highway [drive]

I one particular track session with my B8 S4 I averaged 6.7 mpg (!!!) Sure was fun, though!

Right, I was simplifying for brevity's sake. My point was that in town, in the cut and thrust of Chicago traffic, it doesn't spend much time in "eco" mode...
I probably could average 28 mpg highway if I kept it around 70 mph, but where I drive, that speed will get you run off the road! LOL.
Are you sure cylinder deactivation doesn't happen above 70 MPH? I've seen the MPG bar go green while ACC was on at 72 MPH.

I have had a loaner A6 2.0L Turbo for the past few days. I reset the long term and put it through my normal routine. I'm getting a disappointing 21.5 MPG... My S6 does 18.5 MPG without much effort (long term). I thought the 2.0L Turbo engine with start/stop would get in the 25 MPG range... I'm not a fan of the start/stop technology BTW...
