View Full Version : RS7 3rd-2nd downshift feels abrupt with unitronic tune

So I did the stage 1 Unitronic tune over a week ago. Overall the car seems to be pulling stronger but it is not as radical as I would have expected. Because I travel and occasionally have to use lower than 93 octane I went with the entry-level tune. I have yet to do a launch from standstill but around town it feels strong in 2nd and 3rd, especially in the mid range RPMs. Haven't noticed that big of an increase in the higher RPM range.

Anyways, I'm curious if anybody else with or without a tune has noticed a quite detectable downshift between 3rd and 2nd. When approaching a traffic light in D, I can feel an abrupt downshift only between these two gears. I've noticed it doesn't make a difference what mode of the transmission I'm in or if I'm downshifting myself. Additionally, if I am coasting on the throttle and lightly tap it I almost feel that there is a minor lag and then it engages. When I let off the gas, it has the feel that it disengages. Just does not feel like a ZF8 speed that I had in my prior vehicle. This could be just a more beefy ZF transmission then I had previously and everything is totally fine.

Has anybody else noticed a rather pronounced downshift felt and heard in the cabin during these conditions? I'm not remembering it being as pronounced before the tune, but I think I'm going to flash to stock for a few days to test it. Thanks everyone!

Both. It's even more pronounced in S but it has always been that way in S or dynamic mode. To clarify, it does not sound or feel like a major issue, just unnerving because it's unlike many other ZFs Iv driven.

Do you have a vag com? If so goto 2-auto Trans and see what revision you have. There is an update which might fix your problem. I have never experienced what you are talking about but my guess is because I have a 16 my trans code will have more up to date software

If this is anything like the DSG transmission in the S6/S7, it is possible that there was an newer version of the TCU tune on your vehicle but the tuner may have based theirs on a lower revision that may revert some of the enhancements that were made. The factory DSG software had abrupt downshifts in version 0007 that was fixed in version 0010. The tuner in my case based the tune off 0007 and that resulted in harsh downshifts. They were very good at fixing the issue for me.

Just spoke with John over at Unitronic. Couldn't have been more helpful and friendly.

I did pull up my revision number on vag-com. Looks like I have revision 1006. Could be out of date, luckily I have a Unitronic dealer thats also an Audi dealer here in Chicago and I will see if they have any updates when I'm in for service next. If anybody here has revision numbers of updated zf8 TCU software that would be awesome as well! Thanks for the help

Just to avoid confusion - we're not flashing the ZF 8spd TCU (at this point, at least...).
