View Full Version : carbon fiber!

I was actually wondering what the market is like for carbon fiber parts on here, I recently got a new job making carbon fiber and stuff for gokart bodies, having a b5 1.8t of my own as a daily, i was just wondering what kind of parts "if any" Would interest someone if i started making B5 parts, i made my own car some trim pieces and they turned out quite nice. if anyone has any suggestions for something I could make let me know! just starting out not really knowing what anyone would want, since im not a "PRO" yet my stuff will be priced low. Let me know what interests u to be made in carbon fiber, I might just make it and give you first dibs!

Mirror caps, interior beltline trim. Cupra r lip. Exterior door pillars, roof rails avant.

That's all that interests me.

Radskull1
08-14-2016, 07:48 PM
Can do Mirror caps easy, Interior beltline is what i experimented with on my own B5 and i liked it, Cupra lip would take some measuring but could be done rather easily, And exterior door pillars what a great idea! Roof rails would be difficult lol

do you have pics of the belt trim you did on yours?

tar
08-14-2016, 07:54 PM
Just don't pull a o_carbon and promise caps then realise you can't do em.
If you were closer id send you parts to fucks with since I have a parts car.

Pics of ur beltline work?

I attempted to get a c.f. buddy to make stuff for us but he was not interested. He works on jetskis and has done a full c.f. dash, doorcards and other bits for his car.

Radskull1
08-14-2016, 07:55 PM
no, but i can get pictures of some of the pieces i make tomorrow, after im done with all of them the only pieces i made were on a pre face lift 99, that were the small piece to the left of the wheel and the back right door piece "Just to test to see how they would turn out, Will get a pic of it tomorrow "if i remember to lol" i make everything from gokart dash assemblies to interior side panels so i believe it wouldnt be hard to finish making the trim pieces lol

Radskull1
08-14-2016, 07:56 PM
i have a parts car, and 2 mirrors that are off of a different a4, model, They take 24 hours to make, the only thing ide have to do is go pick some fiberglass resin up to make a cast for them im just testing the waters to see if it would be worth to do a small run of some pieces, If theres a lot of interest Ill do them for sure :D

Radskull1
08-14-2016, 08:10 PM
any other ideas on what i should try?

I would love a front lip for a A5 non-sline front bumper. Dunno how we'd get the dimensions for that though

Radskull1
08-14-2016, 08:44 PM
lol true, It would be guess work using some clay to make a mold for it and going from there ide have to buy the bumper to replicate it lol

Exterior door pillars for sure. Are front fenders possible?

Front fenders would be a premium to make because of dry time being double

Yea but from what I know, you'd have the only carbon fiber b5 fenders on the market

NickW3

carbon body panels would be very appealing if you can make them. Interior bits would be best though, especially at a low price

Literally every panel has already been made for this chassis. Many are no longer making it since the chassis is over 20 years old and no one spends money on them anymore.

If there was a big enough queue for fenders ide go pull mine off and make a cast for a mold i could be in a profitable margine if i sell 4 fenders for 200, the only problem is idk 2 people who want both

Im interested in the CF fenders. depending on the price and if they are fitted for 99.5

a4kamila6
08-23-2016, 10:21 AM
Id like to see a carbon fiber hood if it can handle the heat from engine and also carbon fiber trunk.

Is it possible to make a mold of the doors and make CF doors? The fastening points would have to be reinforced I think.

Figured for someone who has a fully gutted car and wants to drop some extra weight, they can go full carbon fiber, doors, trunk, hood, bumpers, fenders, basically everything. dont know if the doors would work with all the weight of the window rail, the glass itself, motor, door lock and etc, might be too much weight for CF.

tar
08-23-2016, 02:20 PM
If you made c.f. fenders for 200 pair im sure you would have alot of buyers here and on the s4 side. Shit even 400 a set would sell. Company's that sell them right now are quite pricy.

Radskull1
08-23-2016, 04:14 PM
Well i mean 400 pays for the material used so i mean if i make a set can make them, also do all of the cars have the same fenders? Im pretty sure the b5s do if so i can do 400 a set

Rodgman15
08-23-2016, 04:46 PM
I'd be totally in on that.

Radskull1
08-23-2016, 07:09 PM
At that price everyone is happy, i believe ill reinforce the cf so that small dings wont be an issue i can start making the mold for them this week and next week to start making them who ever is interested it will be a first come first served basis, when ive got them made will sell them as i get them done

Do facelift fenders. And ur good. A4/s4 is same its only the 2piece light early a4s that have a bit of xtra material.

The problem i see is i have a set of prefacelifts, they are the same as my facelifts on my 00 unless they bolt up different, :/ research time

tar
08-23-2016, 07:50 PM
Same minus the dumber square turn, and front part where the corner turn of 2piece headlight is. I think it would be better to make facelifts to appeal to s4 crowd also.

How about a Carbon Fibre front lip spoiler, to OEM specs? Not the eBay version. Not sure where'd you find one to copy. But I think it would sell well.

Ill do this !!! Let me know when lol. Are you talking weave over oem stuff with resin on top or mold ? Pretty sure most of us would be fine with weave over oem to retain the mounting tabs

Radskull1
08-27-2016, 07:01 PM
That is easy to do but i would have to have the pieces to cover and finish, u know? If i make a plate that snaps onto the oem and hides it, that might be better also it gives the ability to go back too, ill do some experimentation with it when i get time but it wont be very difficult

Yea will do, ive taken pics of some stuff i made at work but i keep forgetting to post them lol let me do that :p

Radskull1
08-28-2016, 06:20 AM
These are a few flat sheets i made at work, these take more practice to make than a fender lol, 1 error here and its marked as non sell-able
They are harder to make than the fenders, it takes 4 hours for 1 flat sheet even before prep everything has to be perfect even the weather conditions matter for these, Fenders take 2 hours and just need to be vac bagged,

these insure its as close to a replica of the mold as possible, and it should be easier than one of the pieces i've made in the past lol, Gonna start experimenting with CF interior trim, i just have to make a mold and when im trimming them clip some tabs on them so they just click into place it will be a little while for those rn but ill have everything for them this week, i ordered everything that is used where i work, so everything will be the same condition.

the place i work makes fiberglass parts and gokart parts, and soon CF gibson guitars, CF car parts, so ill be practicing at work then coming home to pump out some great parts for u guys here :D

The finished piece from the vac process

Ok so the molds that i can easily do are 1 time use molds which i have to break to release the cf, so if anyone has anything that i dont have listed that they want made i can probably use the 1 time mold to make it, the fender molds are being worked on to start production, once completed im making 2 fenders until they sell, once sold ill make 2 more and so on, if u want something special made let me know and i can quote u a price, there will be a slight premium due to a 1 time use mold, other than that it shouldnt be too expensive, im now waiting on the mold release and 10oz backing for the cf once its here production will begin :)

Meloman, thats about 3k-6k twill the larger the number the larger the square of cf the stuff i use is 3k and 12k but i only use12k for the fenders its a stronger more durable material to any dents or pings, and 12k material ages better

He was talking about ocarbon, the company that took the picture I posted. The guy who ran ocarbon (Matt) used to make high quality pieces, but ended up getting overwhelmed with demand and towards the end took a bunch of people's money and never gave them a product.

Good info though [up] if you can make the trim in that twill range, I think you'll have a ton of buyers. I'm in for sure.

Carbon fiber Interior pieces and pieces for the engine bay. Maybe a carbon fiber lip and rear diffusor, or the EVO style roof fins.

Because it's not what I was expecting, if this set is finished .

What about rear strut mounts? Most of them are rusted out. Only questions would be if carbon fiber what be strong enough (from what I know about it it would be) and liability of that part

From what I understand, the carbon would not be able to withstand such high forces for an extended length of time. I'm part of the FSAE team at Penn State, and we have looked into using carbon fiber wheels on our FSAE car, and they are just not practical because of such high cost of manufacture, and they wear out too fast with all the force on them all the time. They will only last about a day on one of our cars. My assumption is that the strut towers might be in a similar situation. That being said, I would love some carbon or aluminum strut towers [up] though

Id like to see a carbon hood and trunk made but I doubt that will happen, probably not that easy.
