Can someone explain to me why the RS7 is said to not have a "true launch control"? I've read that in several places. What makes a true launch control?

In the S6, the car holds a preset rpm while the gas and brake pedals are depressed simultaneously in launch mode. The RS7 is not programmed to do the same, apparently a limitation of the transmission used in that car.

But from what I understand the RS7 does hold a preset rpm.

It just loads up the torque converter. You can see RS7 drags strip videos how it squats in the back as it loads against the brakes. An S6 dual clutch is basically doing a launch like a manual dumping the clutch.

My transmission-fu is weak, but I believe the RS7 allows for torque braking or something to that effect, wherein the brakes are used to hold the car in place, and the tranny doesn't cut fuel, but will only hold RPMs up to about 3k. Not quite the same as the S6.

RS7 has an 8 Speed Tranny, where as the S6/S7 use the Dual Clutch 7 Speed. It is because of the Dual clutch the tranny can actually drop the clutch at a preset rpm like a manual. Since the Rs7 has a torque converter and no clutch it can't do that. But who cares it still faster w/o launch control and there's no 200x launch limit on the 8 speed.

RS7 comes with ZF 8 speed tranny due to huge torque which the S tronic dual clutch 7 speed wont handle. This ZF 8 speed tanny doesn't have launch control function likke the DSG 7 speed s tronic box. But like yvnrg1981 said who cares for this since its a 605 hp rocked and does 3.5 standstill[o_o]

It's not that the S-tropic can't handle it, it's just that's Audi's marketing answer since they have to guarantee a lifetime...but there are plenty of stage I & II S6's putting out way more torque than a stock RS7 without issue.

I agree

it's still launch control. the presence of a torque converter or clutch pack is irrelevant.
re: 'marketing' answer, s-tronic handles the power fairly well for the first owner, but then we ditch the car off to the second owner and that's where our realm of concern abruptly ends. Thing is, Audi doesn't want these cars back for repairs. If switching up to the zf grants them a nice buffer of reliability with their high torque applications (and it does, industry-wide), then it's a worthwhile choice.
