View Full Version : Audi brake guard and ACC question

I have 2 questions about this. I'd read my manual, but I left it somewhere in my house that I cannot currently find.

1. If I just drove the car and coasted, would it stop itself if there is a car at the stop light or just smash into it? Does brake guard only work if someone unexpected swerves in or brakes hard ahead of you?

2. If I set my ACC to say 50 mph and the car in front of me slows to a stop due to traffic, will my car stop or does it only maintain the distance at a certain speed and above (meaning does it only work and keep distance until you reach a minimum speed and then it disables the ACC?)

Thanks

1. I don't think brake guard will stop your car if you were coasting and there was a car ahead. I've only had it come on in sudden situations.

2. Yes, your car will come to a complete stop. When the car in front of you starts moving again you have to tap the gas pedal a bit for your car to get moving again.

1. It won't stop by itself in that case. It only slams the brake when someone suddenly cuts into the lane in front of you or the car in front of you slams the brake.
2. The car will come to complete stop and it will move again once the car in front of you move. However, it may not react quick enough due to safety so you can activate it by tapping on gas a bit.

Interesting, did not know that. I always just tapped on the gas to get moving. People here get mad if you don't accelerate immediately.

For ACC, I think there's a delay so the distance to the vehicle in front is achieved. I would assume that if you set to have 1 car space distance, it waits until it sees the 1 car space before moving.

As for the brake guard, I think it only engages the brakes when you have your foot on the brake pedal as if you're intending to stop and the car thinks you're not going to stop in time. I've had it engage on me twice. Both times I looked away for a second and someone cut the car off in front of me.

You can actually just pull the ACC lever (on the steering column) towards you if you want to start moving again after a dead stop.

Brake guard engages regardless of foot being on brake or not. I was gunning it in the right lane to pass an asshole driving like a sloth in the left lane. Brake guard engaged as soon as I came remotely close to the car in front of me in the right lane.

Thanks. Good to know.

They should really fix those "Slower traffic keep left" signs. [emoji6]

I had brake guard come on once when I was coming up on a truck to fit into a narrow lane change window, scared the shit outa me. I just used my right foot to come out of it unscathed lol

And if you pull and hold it pulled the car will accelerate a bit quicker than normal and then keep accelerating beyond the set point of your cruise control until you release it. Very nifty

I did not know that. I'm knew using the resume function gets the car moving but never tried holding resume. Thanks for the info.
